If Sonic had beat Mega Man in the previous round this match would've been a lot closer. My logic is Europe never really cared much for either of these chracters but Sonic has a bigger fanbase here.

This is one of the greatest match pics ever because it goes beyond the two characters themselves. It's a part of contest lore, and it was a farewell to the greatest contest rivalry we've had. We all essentially knew this was the last time Mario vs. Crono would matter, so it was cool that they got to square off in the finals, even though we expected Mario to win fairly easily, which he did.

This Crono win totally counts and it’s one of the only good things to come out of the LOL 4WAYS.

Crono vs 3 Nintendo characters does not matter here, no sir.

We just had the Mount Rushmore of Greatest Match Pics topics, and I'm am glad that this Mario vs. Crono picture was among those in it. Both it and Sandbag Zero are the absolute GOATs in that regard.

I loved the days when Mega Man was considered to be stronger than Mario. Sadly this contest proved that Mario was our no 4.

Funny that the 4ways contests always ended up being even on Nintendo vs Other so we didn't get any SFF affected finals.

Snake probably doesn't beat Cloud in 08 without SFF but it didn't affect the winner. But no often the SFF clusterf*** happened earlier.

As much as I love FFX more than the games it snuck by, I would have very much preferred it not sneaking past 4 games that likely beat it 1v1 that year to go the final so that FFVII would've had a better chance at making the upset. I know it was the defending champion technically but Zelda had beaten FF for five consecutive CBs at that point and in series too.

Link would lose two out of three multiway contests and trail for several hours in the third, but this was officially when he left the competition in the dust 1-on-1.

If they ever do another contest they should bring back the losers bracket. Except this time actually set it up properly so you move to a different place in the bracket so you face different people when you lose.

This is low-key one of the most impressive performances ever. Mario had spent two months dominating the contest, building up momentum, and Sephiroth wasn't even in the main bracket. On top of that, he had been underwhelming in the Villains Contest against Nintendo's biggest bad guys. However, Sephiroth stomped Mario into the ground from the jump. He had over 58% during the night vote before the day vote brought the final score down. Mario won one update and tied one other. Even with the power of the Nintendo Boost behind him, the gap between Clinkeroth and the rest of the Noble Nine was still wide indeed.

No character has fallen more than Sephiroth. He went from 57-43 on Mario to getting 60-40d by Mario. Clinkeroth used to be untouchable.

Maybe Smash + Remake/Rebirth has helped, but I don't know. Smash is usually at least a slight bonus, but I haven't seen anyone happy with how Sephiroth was handled in the remakes. In contrast, Cloud was a bigger Smash announcement and his remake portrayal has been praised

Yeah, I don't think Ultimate or Remake helps Sephiroth that much. Everyone from the Noble Nine is in Smash now except for Crono, and it wasn't like he was a big shock or super anticipated because Cloud beat him to the punch. Sephiroth is also the biggest downgrade in Remake from his original characterization of all the major characters, so that won't help him either.

Clinkeroth was just something else back in the day. I'm honestly a bit sad to see how far Sephiroth has fallen.

And we've reached the end of SC2K5! Sephiroth got as close as 48.20% during the night vote before Link pulled away with the day vote. This is probably the cleanest look we ever got at the ratio between Clinkeroth. Also Sephiroth was closer to Link than anyone else was to him.

Not gonna lie, part of me misses the sheer dominance of Clinkeroth. We said it was too boring at the time, but the contests lost a little aura of mystique once other characters caught up to Cloud and Sephiroth.

Also the Game of the Decade 1 retrospective starts in about a month, but we do have some vote-in polls from 9/28 through 10/1, so I'll try to throw those in here when they pop up next week.

my favorite contest, mostly for being the first one I entered a bracket.

You could argue GotD1 was the last truly great contest since this was before rallies started impacting things and the vote totals started tanking

I would agree too. Every contest since has had its moments (even Rivalry Rumble had a couple), but GotD truly was the last time we had great turnout and felt like the site was largely deciding the winner.

FFX getting upset was cool and all but it or Melee should have won.

GotD was an objectively good contest where almost every close match went the opposite way I wanted it to, so I don't have many fond memories of it. GotD 2 was mostly better in that regard.

Majora/ Brawl is probably the worst final we've ever had. A game that doesn't fit the spirit of the contest vs. a game everyone knew would likely lose popularity in the long run. Only worse one is Draven.

B8 literally rallying plucky underdog Zelda to save them from Brawl is the closest thing this contest ever got to Stockholm Syndrome

You’re correct on this. That fanbase is just the worst, and had Melee won that year I have zero doubts Chrono Trigger wins in 2015 with or without Undertale.

For our first vote-in, Assassin's Creed and Devil May Cry dominated, getting nearly 40% between them. I wonder how much would change if we did this poll now. AC probably doesn't win now since this was back before we hit the point of fatigue with the series, but it probably still gets second place because it's pretty weak competition. Beyond that, it's hard to say.

DMC1 definitely wins, AA3 is probably stronger since then. I feel like AC1 could have gotten very weak but maybe still gets second.
