I have two friends who were adamant that Fallout 3 was better than NV. I remember arguing with them years ago about it. This was when NV was only maybe 2-3 yrs old

Then all of a sudden like 3ish years ago they completely changed their opinion and acted like it was always how they felt

there's been a big narrative swing on NV based on online worship (rightfully earned) but Fallout 3 was definitely "the one" and still remains so to some people who aren't terminally online

It’s from Edge Magazine and is another industry list like the GQ one from earlier in the year.

Ah, okay that list is very good. MGS was grossly snubbed though, which is a shame. The game has aged like milk but there is no denying its influence.

Yeah this is definitely the way it’s gone. I think some NV diehards had a bit of a chip on their shoulder early on due to the way NV’s release was handled and its relative lack of prominence compared to 3 so got extra vocal but I think it’s declined. For me, I came to the games late and really enjoyed both about the same amount. 3 has better exploration, NV has better story and roleplaying. They both excel at different things and it makes sense when you consider what their respective developers are known for!

Wesker is just that character that always seems to look underwhelming, for whatever reason. Not much else you can say about Snake vs. Vivi since that went the way we thought.

Snake was a monster in 2008 fresh off of MGS4 and Brawl

This was certainly an improvement over losing to Pyramid Head for Chris.

And I remember the Braid phase on Board 8. I even played it!

I replayed Braid the other day. Still brilliant, but man Fickle Companion will wreck your time trials if you ain't careful.

Imagine telling someone on Board 8 that the character that finished below CATS and got <7% in a contest match would eventually win a debated match a few years later. Talk about a glow up.

Just goes to show how bad of a game Uncharted 1 is :P

Need that FFVIII remake so that Squall can beat Yoshi again

Uncharted 1: 2007's PS3-GotY runner-up to Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction.
Drake after this: got doubled by CATS in 2008.

Uncharted 2: 2009's overall-GotY runner up to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, later got 46% on Halo in 2010/33% on Sonic 2 in 2015/got fourth from the bottom with 6% in 2019's "greatest game with 2" poll by defeating Dark Souls 2, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2.
Drake after this: 48% on The Boss in 2010.

Uncharted 3: 2011's system-exclusive-GotY runner-up to Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.
Drake after this: doubled Steve, barely beat Pac-Man, and almost doubled an SFF'd Mr. Game and Watch before losing easily to an LFF'd Pokemon Trainer Blue in 2013.

Uncharted 4: 2016's overall-GotY third place to Final Fantasy 16 and Pokemon Sun/Moon, later got 41% on Mario Kart 8 in 2020/got next to last place with 5% in 2022's "greatest game with 4" poll by only defeating Street Fighter 4.
Drake after this: 43% on Tails in 2018.

Really, that's a pretty good GotY-resume on paper, and Uncharted 2 does have a few victories in contests like over Legend of Dragon and Street Fighter 4...but we know these haven't been great performances overall. Uncharted's never looked great in contests, and by extension Drake's looked rough too. Uncharted 1 was a weak game in comparison to the rest of the series, it seams (I haven't played them, and Drake as a dude-bro type of character didn't have GameFAQs audiences latching onto him or that game right away. That pretty much explains the CATS loss...

...yet, damn, it's still odd to see he got doubled by CATS and then make a few more contests and have his series doing this well despite that loss on his record. Drake's even got a movie now...and CATS beat that guy.

What I'm saying is CATS deserves a movie and I don't mean the movie "Cats."

Uncharted 1 is mediocre gameplay with great setpieces and a fun story/cast. The other games follow the same formula except they made the gameplay good, so that's the difference.

Do you think Drake beats CATS 1v1 that year?

Drake got more than doubled by CATS in a battle for hardcore votes in the bottom 22% of that poll -- maaaaaybe Squall hurt Drake for more casual PS-votes (and Yoshi is a casual vote draw too who was in that poll), but I don't buy it enough. Uncharted 1 just hadn't caught on here at that time.

Also CATS got close to Ansen one-on-one, so CATS hypothetically could win a one-on-one match against someone weak enough.

CATS > Drake one-on-one in 2008.

CATS could certainly win a match against someone sufficiently weak 1-on-1 and maybe 2008 Drake is in that category. But even disregarding Drake entirely, that 2008 match doesn't look quite right compared to 1-on-1 strength. Yoshi barely doubled CATS, and while some of that's Yoshi's fault for being bad that year, it probably makes CATS look too strong 1-on-1 to be believable.

Yeah format helped CATS hence why I asked. It's just hard to believe regardless lol.

I remember Ness & Pac-Man being a well debated Round 1 match, and those who thought Pac-Man would stand out in the sea of Nintendo ended up being right. I'd be curious if Pac-Man could do that today, or what would happen if the fodder here wasn't basically Nintendo exclusive at the time.

Ness is a pretty infamous folder in the face of Nintendo SFF, so I'd bet on Pac-Man still advancing there.

Nessie basically has no reason to be better than he ever was while Pac-Man has since been in Smash and maybe more importantly benefits from being recognizable. I think the match goes the same at least in terms of placement.

Earthbound finally got a rerelease since including its first ever release in Europe. Also its general popularity has increased.

When was that? Has Ness generally looked better since 2008?

2013, but that was mere days before his first match and in his second he got massively SFF’d by Luigi. In 2018 however Ness looked pretty good so I think he’s stronger now. To me the actual question in a rerun is how well Pac-Man does.

Probably one of the bigger round one shockers (and not just because nobody expects Jinjo). Big Boss hadn't looked anywhere near this good in 2005 or 2007, and even accounting for LFF for Kirby, he still nearly nabbed 50% of the vote.

Big Boss beat Kirby worse than he beat Crash Bandicoot.

I miss when MGS was in its prime here.

Maybe the MGS3 remake will bring those days back

2B looked very good though! It’s just that people hadn’t quite clocked that she was worth something yet.

Speaking of impressive 2018 debuts, it’s a shame that we didn’t get a Character Battle when the Witcher Netflix series was in its prime. It would have been fun to see the Geraltmania.

In 2013? Maybe. In 2018, I'd say Knuckles had the edge. Captain Falcon got 35% on Seph and Knux was worth 38% on Pikachu through Zero.
