It took us a while to definitively see that Auron was stronger than Tidus because of SFF (since he faced Seph the next year) and the weird Magus result.

I wonder how much Auron would SFF Tidus if they ever faced.

I kind of want to see a 3-way with Auron, Tidus, and Yuna just to see who places second.

Yuna > Auron > Tidus

Yeah, Yuna might actually have a chance to pull that out since I imagine Tidus and Auron affect each other more

I'd still go Auron > Yuna > Tidus though

If you want a three way where Yuna beats Auron, I'd say Yuna > Auron > Jecht would be very viable.

I believe we were still running the contest on Central Time in SC2k3? I think the transition to Pacific Time happened midway through Spring 2004, and the transition to Eastern Time happened in 2006.

Pretty sure the poll starting time changed to 12 AM Pacific Time almost immediately after the end of the Summer 2003 contest.

It was 3am in 2004, I remember this because I was in feedback tickets all throughout begging Ceej to change the poll time. I forget exactly when, but it was moved to 1am by the time 2005 started.

I remember Yoshi being the board favorite because of that Favorite Mario Character POTD that he won. This was our first lesson in learning that POTDs don't necessarily translate to contests.

I feel like the original plan was game of the 90’s but it seems now if there is another one in the next few years it would probably either be another Best Game Ever or another Character Battle.

Master Chief's first loss of many over the years.

There was a time where Master Chief would probably wins that. Now he probably loses it a fair bit worse.

I think that's a fairly short window, and even then, it's unclear if he would have needed multi ways to clinch it.

He definitely would have won in 2007. I wouldn't have confidence he'd have won in any other year.

It felt like Zero was in contention for strongest non-Noble Niner for a couple of years since he resisted SFF really well against Mega Man and put up 44% the next year.

I wonder how Zero vs. Sonic goes now.

Yeah, Zero is the strongest non-Noble Niner in 2003 that wasn't behind Magus, so in retrospect, this match ended up being one the biggest close calls for a while.

I imagine Sonic probably gets around the same as this, maybe a little less, because Zero has dropped a bit over the years. Pikachu could beat Sonic, but not by this much.

I'd take Auron over Zero, so yeah, 55-56% for Sonic sounds right.

This was the match that knocked out the last remaining perfect brackets, IIRC.

Weird to think you would have made it that far and picked Zero here (Yes, I know it was close), but I guess it took a more maverick kind of mind to predict every other upset up to this point.

Makes me wonder how well Sonic would've done if he had faced Mario before the Nintendo Boost in 2005.

It's hard to say, because we got Mario World vs. Sonic 2 about nine months later, and Mario World completely stomped all over Sonic 2. Then, we got Mario & Bowser vs. Sonic & Robotnik in Rivals, and it went about the same as the games did.

It's bizarre to think that Shadow could have performed better against Mario than Sonic would have if they had been set against each other in 2003, but it is a big possibility.

It felt like Mario himself (not the games or the other Mario characters) was an anti-vote magnet the first few years. I don't think Sonic would've won, but it's still a shame we never saw it when it could've actually been interesting.

Yeah, I don't think Mario vs. Sonic would have been 70-30 like the Games/Rivalry results were, but I do think it's possible that Shadow's overperformance may be due to something that Sonic himself may not have been able to replicate.

Shadow and Sonic are just about even in the x-stats in 2003. So maybe!

Wario's number in the x-stats is probably the canary in the coal mine that kills that idea though. Hard to believe he was a respectable midcarder that contest with how much a lot of other Nintendo characters struggled.

The weirdest coincidence of all-time is that Tidus and Shadow were equally overrated in the X-Stats, so it accurately predicted their 2004 match, which gave us more ammunition to think the Link/Magus result was legit.

That Mario vs Shadow number is just absurd.

Sonic went toe to toe with Samus in 2002, who has been at Mario's level or higher in most years. Granted, for all his poor showings in 2002 and 2003, Mario didn't actually lose except to Link and Sephiroth and he got that win over Cloud where votals exploded to the point where Cloud got more votes than any previous poll option in a Gamefaqs poll.....and still lost.

Samus absolutely cheated. I was there and it made Mario/Crono a year later look tame.

Mario probably loses fairly easily to Cloud without the Planet GameCube rally and the release of Sunshine on the day of the match.

Mario cheated too. 500 vote spike out of nowhere. It was very very easy to cheat back then, which is why the Crono thing was so funny. His was just beyond blatant.

Yeah, there were no real cheating measures in place back then, because why would you expect people to cheat on a massive scale in this thing

The other big coincidence is that Tidus was also overrated in 2002, likely because the poll was down during Tidus vs. Sonic during the daytime, which of course, is Sonic's best time.

I can believe Tidus was at his strongest in 2002. FFX was 6 months old at that point.
