Yeah, RE4 and Oblivion were comparable. I think people expected Oblivion to drop off after Skyrim, but it was still pretty strong.

I mean, Oblivion winning that round 1 match was a pretty popular pick. Not trying to discredit it. But it's more reasonable to assume SMRPG was riding on momentum at that point than Oblivion being stronger than RE4.

Of course, now we get new Geno pictures when it's very likely contests are done.

I like that Sunshine has dropped a bit in this poll because people finally replayed it on the Switch and realized it actually isn't that good

Nah that's a so small difference it's negligible.

Seems like the day vote has helped it recover a bit to get more in line with last time

Ah yeah I didn't see it early.

But it also seemed weird to be people went from having it as their #1 of them all to realizing they didn't think it wasn't good. Maybe some people recalled it being better than they felt on a replay, but I would not think that was people that voted it above the rest 4 years ago lol.

Well, today is the anniversary of Aeris vs. Sora, an SSF beatdown that caused many to overlook Sora the next year after the winner of Ryu Hayabusa vs. Jill Valentine match was presumed to run right through the third round.

I'd still take Chief with a fair degree of confidence since it's not like Golden Sun is much of a hot topic, but I'd laugh if this ended up being one of the more stable 2003 rematches.

Chief probably wins by more. Felix was relevant in 2003 but he’s faded since.

I’m not even trying to downplay Golden Sun here. I’d take Isaac over Chief and not look back. But Felix? It sounded like a really cool idea for him to be the main character of The Lost Age, but it resulted in him becoming a silent main, and therefore just Isaac Version 2.0 rather than a distinct character, so once TLA’s recency faded he got left in the dust.

Yeah, I'm all for Chief embarrassing himself these days, but I can't imagine Felix having any real strength now.

Today is the anniversary of Zero vs. Scorpion, which would be a 100% Guru win now, but was a toss up due to Zero not being in 2002 and Scorpion having made the Elite 8 previously, though that was due to the weakness of his division.

Zero > Sub-Zero so what chance did Scorpion have?

Ken deserved better. It's also kind of funny how Mario and Sonic are in side by side matches in the bracket but couldn't meet until the finals. In the end, they would never meet in this contest or later on.

Yeah, it's wild that after 21 years, the closest we ever got was Mario vs. Shadow and Sonic vs. Luigi.

The most interesting thing you can say about Sonic vs. Ken is that Sonic did 3% better than Samus did on Ken the year prior, but it's not like that even foreshadowed anything since it was the only good result Sonic had that season.

Both Sonic and Ken probably dropped but Ken dropped more due to the state of Street Fighter at the time.

We saw Ryu go from 42% on Samus to 43% on Snake, which would have been fine...except the latter was sprite Snake.

Street Fighter 4 feels like it came out a long time go. But in 2003, it would still be years away.

Street Fighter IV was a long time ago! It's a 15 year old game now.

I also think part of Sonic's overperformance could be explained by the seeding. He probably got the benefit of a lot of bracket votes since he was a 1 seed and Ken was a 16.

Slight correction, Sonic vs. Ken was a 2-15 match. One would think this would have been considered a pretty safe match to vote against a bracket nonetheless, but looking at all the 1 and 2 seed matches in the first round, they do all really good across the board in retrospect.

So why was Shadow this strong in 2003 anyways?

I think Sonic Adventure 2 enjoyed a pretty good player base on this site, especially with it being one of the early GameCube titles of note that wasn't Smash, and that character archetype was pretty popular on this site in 2003.

Meanwhile, this run was nicely timed because that was the last Sonic game to date, because we are only a couple titles away from Shadow the Hedgehog (the Game), and a few other games that would reduce his name to a punchline.

Yeah, I think this was back when we liked edgy characters because we were mostly a site of edgy teenagers, and it was before the Sonic Cycle began in earnest.

Shadow is an awesome character in Sonic Adventure 2… but then he became a side character in Heroes and after that he got guns.

2018 x-stats have Wario and Shadow basically as a toss-up, so I'd actually would be intrigued by a rematch.
