The match picture for 1997 was utter garbage
and featured none of the games that actually made it a great year so
the complaints were valid What made it worse was Allen making a topic asking for pictures of those specific games ahead of time (which was a hint for us that this wasn't going to end well for 1997 and should've been a hint to Allen not to use those games since nobody was submitting them without him asking). What games were used in each picture? My logic when choosing 2001 I think was Melee + FFX > FF7 With smaller games not even really factoring in my decision process Started from the bottom now we here |

III looked, I dunno, passably mediocre in both 2010 and 2015 and while
you could probably argue that the long term trends will point downwards
rather than upwards for it...it'd be against DotA which I don't think he
has ever shown any signs of life, so it wins practically by default

had struggled with relevance and had room to grow among people who
hadn't played or weren't huge on Symphony of the Night, whereas people
here have been saturated by constant Mario content since childhood, most

don’t think it’ll be a huge boost, but keeping the characters relevant
is always useful for maintaining strength. This is the biggest Mario
thing in years, it keeps the characters going. Of course looking at what Breath of the Wild did, especially for Zelda herself, you can always boost even when you should be saturated. I just decided to change this sig. Blaaaaaaargh azuarc |

We've
seen massively popular games have no effect on their characters'
popularity, so I don't think the movie guarantees anything more than
keeping Mario Team's popularity steady. That being said, Peach has a more active role than usual in the movie, so she might get a little boost, temporarily at least. Congrats on Advokaiser for winning the 2018 Guru Contest! Yesmar |

yeah my more sincere thought is that the Mario movie's impact for a
hypothetical contest here is much less about reaching new users here and
more about giving a new and exciting association with a lifelong brand.
I dunno that it will do much, but it's a new huge thing and a unique
ace in the sleeve that nobody else in the Noble Nine has to this scale
(settle down, Advent Children fans). I would still bet on Zelda > Mario though after the last contest and knowing TotK is about to release. Same for Cloud post-FF7R. I'm unsure if the Mario movie will matter for Mario here more than MD for Samus -- these are all GotY-winners and contenders, so who knows with any of those characters we last knew were very close to Mario. Things
randomly boost all the time for weird reasons. I don’t think a movie
doing favors for Mario is some hot take compared to like, Chrono Trigger

things don't get "extra respect" for being a 1 seed, they just get more bracket votes I was being sarcastic about the Mario movie not helping at all, it would probably help if we had a contest sometime soon because the hype and nostalgia will be fresh in people's minds, but I don't think the effect will last very long because it's not garnering new fans |

isn't beating anyone strong but with the boost for female characters
across the board possibly continuing (based on the female boost
coinciding with strong improvement for female characters in the custom
character polls...and Chun-Li continuing to rise in Street Fighter II
polls), I could see the Mario movie also helping to give her a very

Personally,
I'm kind of curious what Sonic's strength would be, as he's had
multiple movies, TV shows, Sonic Frontiers, and got murdered. He still
loses to Zelda, especially after TotK, but I doubt he'd embarrass

As much as I'd like to see Squall do well, Snake is among the few where I'd never consider voting Squall. Guinness Book of World Records is the name of the diary that belongs to azuarc, the winner of the Game of the Decade II guru contest. |
