I've tried to play FFT at least 3 times and can never get past around 8 hours before I get really bored.

Contests seem over. If new owners cared we would have had one by now.

I mean contests have always been low priority for whoever has owned the site for the last decade

I'll hold out hope until Game of the Decade 3 in 2030. If we don't get that or any other contests until then, they're truly over.

Honestly how with how trash our vote totals have been, we’re better off. I can’t get excited for stuff getting like 25k.

Again, yes? It would still have been a very tight match. 25k votes is a lot, and I don't think there's a tremendous amount of variance added with 5x the votes. (I'm not a statistics/polling major though!) Enough to swing a super close match? Of course, but close is still close.

What I think is worth lamenting is the general smoothing of trends over time, as the "after school" voting is gone. We still have some trends from varying tastes in countries but even that will have homogenized with more recent generations of games.

I guess I'm still a fan of having site wide contests, even if they're only getting 25k votes (or 12K...). I know we have various board topics for voting on "Games of X Generation" but those are more like primaries in politics, much more prone to bizarre nominations and results.

I asked SBAllen regarding a contest and this what he had to say "As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn't hold your breath for one to happen in 2023."

Yeah, I really can't blame SBAllen since convincing higher ups that contests could be worthwhile is hard when the higher ups keep changing and wanting new stuff for the website. At least he's personally still interested in contests.

That's a bummer to hear. I hope SBAllen still advocates for them -- I imagine he is anyway -- but yeah it's a hard situation if you don't get to build much time with a boss to ask for unique and more expensive things like a contest.

If that is the case, I wish he would do more polls like what your favorite game is in any given series. Kirby, Metal Gear, Metroid...just give us more polls about game popularity in the meanwhile. No contest is required for that.

I'd be fine with running tournaments with no cash prize if that's what it took to have an otherwise standard contest.

That’s what I’ve wanted all along. Or just a karma prize or whatever. You don’t have to have money involved to have fun.

We've all been saying that for years. Allen is the one who doesn't want to do it that way.

Didn't Allen once say there would still need to be some involvement from legal for any contest, even one without prizes?

I could see that being the case even for something with a non-monetary prize.

But for running a series of interconnected polls that doesn't make sense. Hell, don't we kind of have that already every year with the GotY polls?

I do wonder if having to portray all those likenesses/copyrighted material on the front page from dozens of video game properties is something that legal needs to clear or something.

There's no f***ing way. First off, there's all sorts of images now on the home page and all over the website. Second, fair use; there's a billion internet pages with all sorts of s*** on them that's certainly not been approved by "legal".

We just got above 10000 votes in yesterday's poll for the first time in 2023. That might be the only poll this year to get above 10000 votes unless we get an age poll which is known for getting high vote totals.

And apparently Allen is stepping away more and more from GameFAQs, I feel like the chance of another contest is very slim. a sad but not unexpected end to our contests.

at least it seems "Fandom" isn't going to shut down this site.

...for those who don't know where that comment is coming from.

I mean, I suppose with more people behind the scenes, and perhaps the ability/desire to advertise contests across Fandom...maybe this increases the chances of a contest?

I have difficult regarding putting someone from Fandom more directly in charge of pretty much anything to do with the site as likely to be a move that will be beneficial to the site and its user base.

Contests are looking more and more likely to be finished, based on all this news, or at the very least we'll be lucky to get them more often than every few years now.

It's kind of an odd feeling realizing that.
