It absolutely is not, correct. I brought it up mainly to highlight the vocal fandom and how they diverge from the general audience. Like, all those movies prequel or sequel except for Rise of Skywalker got Cinenascores in the A- to A range and made a ton of money. Most people like most Star Wars films which is not the impression you get in online spaces.

I have never been a huge SW fan. I'd say I care more about it now than maybe 3 years ago, but that's because Andor exists, and that's easily my favorite product in the entire franchise.

Don't really care about other content, though.

Let's not pretend that GameFAQs isn't a bunch of oldie diehard types who wouldn't be put off by the Sequel Trilogy. In 2007 Luke Skywalker was untainted. It's not a gigantic drop but the peak is gone.

All the more reason to double down on the opinion that the original movies were superior. Like I would expect FF7 and FF10 to still be beasts even if the site has been mostly down on Final Fantasy's output for the last 20 years or so.

Those are two of the games I was internally comparing to Star Wars! I think they both underperformed by a bit in 2015. So did FF8. Still strong, just not at their peak.

FFX-2, FFXII, and FFXIII are the prequels.

XIV and XV are the sequels.

FF14 doesn't really fit the bill. It does very well on GameFAQs for an MMORPG.

Professional reviewers are less than meaningless for gauging popularity or quality anymore.

The Last Jedi got an A Cinemascore (joint best ever for the series), 5/5 from Comscore (best ever), 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, over an 80 on Metacritic, and made 1.3 billion dollars. It’s not even divisive outside of specifically online nerd spaces. Other M, come on.

I agree on TLOU2, and Final Fantasy X-2 is a strong candidate here as well:

• Follow-up to a safe, well-received entry in the franchise
• Sought to be the opposite of the previous entry in many ways
• Significant tonal shift (Compare TFA's sincere ending to TLJ's comedic lightsaber toss scene)
• Divisive portrayal of a beloved character (Luke/Yuna)
• "Subverted expectations" in terms of small-scale ideas but failed to take any serious risks down the stretch
• Praised by critics; divided the fanbase

I won't defend it (it's a total mess), but it's a fun ride if you turn your brain off and watch the movie with zero expectations.

I'm usually good with fanservice for the sake of fanservice but Rise of Skywalker somehow makes it unsatisfying

RoS is hot garbage imo, but if someone enjoys it then hey, I hope you have fun with it.

I'm somewhat tired of the internet's tendency to hate everything, particularly things I like,so I try not to get into people's case for liking things I don't.

I wonder if TotK will make BotW weaker in a games contest. We've seen similar things before with how Smash games that are obsolete'd by newer games in the series get weaker, like with Brawl and Smash 4.

It's a popular theory but we have not actually seen that with Smash games. SSBB never got back into a contest after SSB4 came out. SSB4 never got into a contest after SSBU came out. It definitely tanks their nomination support. But, we don't know how much it affects their contest performance.

I don't expect TotK to be anywhere as strong as prime BotW, so it would suck if instead of one game capable of challenging the nostalgic elites on this site, we get two high tiers instead.

I don't think BotW will suffer that much unless there becomes some sort of consensus that TotK made it obsolete, which is what happened with Brawl and Smash 4.

I don't see BotW being replaced, now or probably ever. BotW may or may not be outdone by TotK, but BotW is AT LEAST in the top three LoZ-games as of before TotK's release and BotW is the only other LoZ-game I've ever seen land #1 on a site's top-games list besides OoT (GQ's top 100 recently). That argument is a little too LMS'y by itself for my tastes, but can you name another LoZ-game that's ever done that? People very much love BotW.

BotW was also a launch game for Nintendo's most successful system since the Super Nintendo or Nintendo DS, and it is hard to just replace a giant launch game by Nintendo in voters' minds. SMW and SM64 are likely our two strongest Mario games. LoZ:TP would also hold up against or beat most other Nintendo games, with only OoT or BotW being likely to SFF it much. TP doesn't do that well on LoZ-series polls...but it's been able to beat SMG1 and MP1 with LoZ:WW in the mix during a Game of the Century-poll, it was able to beat RE4 with SSBB in the same poll before, and its biggest loss came from fellow Nintendo launch game SM64. LoZ:TP is no lightweight.

Melee's close enough to a launch game to count for this in my mind, and it could still win or be competitive against other Smash-games (it did lose to Brawl to be fair but it was close).

Granted, Super Mario Bros. 1 is a launch game that got SFF'd...partly because of another launch game in SMW, partly because the even bigger NES-Mario game was in the same poll:

Wii Sports was destroyed by LoZ:MM, but MM went on to win the contest and I don't see another WS game beating the original WS which is more of the main point here. Also, like Duck Hunt, WS wasn't THE launch game -- not for the GameFAQs audience anyway.

All that is to say...if you were loved and well-received at launch, it's going to take huge and unlikely circumstances to replace you in voters' hearts. People bought a console immediately expecting to play you, and games like what I mentioned usually met or exceeded those expectations for people through-out the console's lifespan.
