Mega Man vs. Mega Man X would be funnier, especially if it was never made clear whether it was the character or the game represented.

Scyther vs Skull Kid

I'm pretty sure the antagonist of a game that won Game of the Decade won't lose to a random pokemon. Especially considering MM straight-up beat Gold/Silver.

I would bet on most of the Pokemon that are notable enough to have been in a contest already would beat Skull Kid. But randos like Scyther that no one but hardcore Pokefans even think about? No way.

Skull Kid is lame. There's a reason he's never made a contest despite Majora's popularity.

I would worry about most gen 1 Pokémon tbh. Scyther is pretty popular among fans.

Eh, Scyther might not be in the highest tier of Pokemon but he's still a huge Gen 1 fan favorite along the lines of Gengar, Arcanine, Articuno, and so on. Is that enough to beat Skull Kid? Maybe not, but Scyther wouldn't roll over and die the same way that Clefable or Venomoth would.

I suppose a huge wild card for Skull Kid might be the match pic, or more specifically, does the physical Majora's Mask make the pic or not? Most artwork of Skull Kid does have the mask, but there is enough maskless pics where it could be an issue if he does draw a debatable match.

Scyther is popular but I wouldn't put it on the level of Gengar. I don't have much respect for Skull Kid's strength so Scyther might win anyways.

If you have to consider the match pic to decide whether Skull Kid beats a mid-tier Gen 1 Pokemon, you might as well just pick the Pokemon.

any Gen 1 Pokémon is going to have popularity beyond hardcore pokefans

maybe I’m overdoing it, but I bet like 1/3 of Gen 1 could beat Skull Kid

Keep in mind Jigglypuff has made the contest, and she was pretty weak despite having the backing of the anime and Smash Bros. I'd peg Skull Kid around her level, anyway.

Man, I wish Jigglypuff wasn't fed to a pseudo NN'er.

Yeah, I don't know if Jigglypuff's one contest match was the best measure of her strength, but it's also not a great sign if you are digging away from the truly iconic and memorable Pokemon to the mid-level ones like Scyther, especially against an entrant that just screams N64 Zelda in his design and may even have the iconic Majora's Mask in the picture.

No offense, but there's no proof Smash!Jigglypuff is female.

Smash Jigglypuff clearly identifies as female, considering the garb she wears. Refusing to address her using her desired pronouns would be rude.

The costumes corrspond to the female player characters while Pikachu's correspomd to the male player characters, and 75% of Jigglypuff are female.

^ not that Mega Man X can't SFF some Nintendo characters or pull some anti-Pokemon magic (thinking of Mega Man-with-Zero ousting Charizard), but Jigglypuff is a Pokemon and a unique one at that so I'm cautious to assume much SFF. She's probably just weak. She's clearly not high on the Nintendo, Pokemon, and fighting game totem poles anyway.

Among Pokemon fans Scyther easily defeats Jigglypuff. I'm not sure if there are enough non-Gen I Pokemon voters that would vote for Jigglypuff because they are in Smash. It's not like Jigglypuff is a fan favourite in the game.

Jigglypuff kinda sucks in the original Smash. In Melee she's a beast, so that poll wouldn't be the best to judge overall popularity.

squirtle is a cool guy and there were those Squirtles who wore sunglasses in the anime

pikachu is Pikachu. Pikachu transcends any need for being cool by being the face of the franchise

Squirtle is a starter, and I'm not convinced he's actually stronger than Mewtwo or Charizard. He had a lot of impressive results in 2013, but so did Mewtwo, and Mewtwo fell back to earth when put into a normal contest setting without everything going crazy. Squirtle's most 'honest' result is probably Round 1, where he did this:

Doubling Ramza isn't a bad result, but it's not amazing, either.

Yeah, I wouldn't trust Squirtle to be able to beat Cloud again or anything

I feel like this is less true than it used to be though.

It should be pointed out that Scyther has basically zero people that like it because they used it or even fought it in RBY and its early anime appearances were not extensive from what I recall.

And after how hard Lugia failed I’m hesitant to put a great deal of weight behind its much-improved GSC availability.

It gained relevant anime appearance in Orange Islands.

That's a very respectable level of strength and is way better than Jigglypuff did.

Yeah, Lugia looked fine in 2013. But, ultimately it was 2013 so it doesn't really mean much either way.

I went and booted up Zero Wing on NSO and I cannot believe the music from the video is what’s actually in the game itself. Also, it’s legitimately a very good game.

Yeah, Zero Wing's OST is legit. I played the game on an emulator back in 2005 and thoroughly enjoyed it. IIRC my biggest gripe was that it was too short/easy.

The music is legit; the voice ain't. :(
