Contest Stats and Discussion - Part 1369

Heh, first Red Vultures puts a bullet in Giant Bomb, killing that site for good, and now they are "too busy" s***ting up their other acquisitions to give us a 20 anniversary GameFAQs contest. CJayC should have never sold it to begin with

We actually have stuff planned for GB this year, but I can't talk about it. I'm actually product manager for GB and GS (and ComicVine) too as of a couple months ago.

Since you're invovled with GB now, some constructive feedback from someone who was subscribed to the site since around 2012, and listening to the Bombcast before that: they really need to focus on more gaming content, and less on the "general nerd 'culture'" stuff they've been pushing. I don't think I'll ever re-subscribe to GB, as Gerstmann is the only crew member left there that I like. Also they really need to do something about Jess/voidburger, as since she's joined the Bombcast has been completely impossible to listen to as she tries to talk over everyone constantly, and doesn't usually have anything constructive to say as she apparently has only ever played the Silent Hill series.

I've been a GB subscriber since the very beginning.

I will agree that what I want from GB is gaming coverage, first and foremost. I don't care for ALBUMMER, Very Online show is...whatever, and I don't listen to the non-gaming pods. GB has always had a certain amount of non-gaming talk/stuff but I don't think it's gotten that bad since the sale.

I'm a few months behind on the podcast (1-2 weeks behind on video stuff) but hard disagree on Jess. She's been a great addition and is holding the site up along with Jan.

I haven't been watching any of the video content lately, so she might be great in those, but in terms of the podcast format, it's absolutely unbearable to the point that i stopped listening when Danny stopped appearing. I found myself physically cringing in the shower multiple times when Jeff was making a salient point about a topic and she kept cutting him off to make a Silent Hill related non-sequitor. Luckily Nextlander has filled that gap nicely

I second “please stop talking about culture war” junk. We play games to not see that garbage.

And Allen, see all this console discussion? This is the liveliest this topic has been in months.

She didn't "fold" to Samus. Samus is just that strong. Tifa has held up like a boss to Samus in the past.

Might be a wrong choice of word, I just meant that she ran into someone she had no chance of boosting past and Zelda would probably be a similar experience.

Also, no chance Sora beats Aerith.

I'm months behind on the podcasts because of the splits over the years adding both Waypoint and Nextlander into the queue. And that's even with me listening to podcasts at 2x speed, like a lunatic! So it's hard for me to notice any "talking over" issues.

Anyway, none of this is important for a Contest topic.

My initial reaction was Vivi > Aerith, but then I realized Sora is now in Smash so....Sora > Vivi?

FFRemake will likely boost FF7 characters back up. I don’t know about taking Tifa over Samus but I’d think about Zelda. Only because I believe she was heavily rallied last contest and I wouldn’t take her to beat Mario again.

I’d be stunned if Zelda didn’t hold her strength. BotW is the real deal.

Oh, beating Zelda would be a tall order, even with a Remake boost, but I wouldn't say she has no chance of winning that. People continually underrate just how strong Tifa is.

Also Sora being in Smash now just gives him one more opportunity to underperform and lose in an embarrassing fashion, perhaps to another Pokemon character.

I would bet on Zelda being a bit weaker than in 2018. Breath of the Wild is less recent now.

I think BotW 2 hype will work just fine as a booster.

Based on how these contests tend to work, I'm sure a hypothetical Zelda/Tifa match would fall on the release date of BotW2.

Only for her to do no better at all against Samus riding on that major upset.

That said, her strength right now would definitely be much more due to BotW boost than BotW2 hype.

Switch would crush Gamecube, and I say this as a guy who loves Gamecube more than any other system.

Gamecube > N64 is possible because N64 has the shallowest library of any Nintendo console. It would need OoT/MM/SM64 nostalgia to carry it anywhere. Is that enough to beat Gamecube's Melee/Prime/WW/ToS nostalgia? Probably.

The issue with Gamecube is that its games were low-key for the most part. People have to stop and think, "Hmm, what was on Gamecube again?" It also doesn't help that the Cube's flagship game (Melee) is basically obsolete at this point.

The only consoles with a shot at beating SNES are PS1/2 and PC. Switch could be a potential darkhorse due to its current popularity, the handheld factor, and the fact that it plays a ton of older games, but I think it would get SFF'd into the ground by SNES in a 1v1.

...So if Switch >>> Gamecube and N64 > Gamecube, then you should probably expect Switch to beat N64 too, yes?

I would take Switch over any Nintendo console other than SNES.

I wouldn't be surprised if PS1 bombed (relative to these 'surely it's top 4' sounding expectations). It feels like the NES, influential, with very popular games at the top, but also very outdated.

I don't think a site that's as stuck in the past as GameFAQs would rate the Switch that highly.

Most GameFAQs users would take a bullet for their favorite PS1 Final Fantasy.

Throw in MGS, RE1-3, Xenogears, SotN, Suikoden 1/2, Silent Hill, various mid-tier JRPGs, etc., and I believe you have PS1 at #3 or #4 when the X-Stats roll around.

What fighting games do with characters is pretty irrelevant considering all of them play loose with continuity and canon.

Sheik vs Zelda first round, it's the only logical solution!
