Unfortunately. I thought the Ringer audience was older and would bring some of the old school characters through.

But at the same time, if SpongeBob is powerful, you'd expect the Avatar characters to be powerful as well as they should appeal to older and younger people (Avatar is basically an American anime. TONS of people have watched/rewatched it on Netflix). But the Avatar characters bombed.

Spongebob is pretty old-school by now TBH.

Spongebob is the flagship of Nick.

And also one of the best shows on it for a few seasons. (Hey Arnold still the best though)

I had already bailed on Nick by the time SpongeBob began, so I have zero love for it.

Same with Avatar.

I think something needs to be 70s or 80s to be considered old school on the Ringer. Like Doug is 1991 and may simply be too new even if it is much older than Spongebob.

Yeah, Ringer's demographic is even older than ours. SpongeBob might be popular because it's what their kids watch.

I hate Spongebob because my current roommate does nothing but stay in her room watching it all day, every day. I literally have to wait until she stops watching it to go to sleep, and I wake up to her watching it in the morning.

Isn't that exactly why it shouldn't be surprising to see the Avatar characters flop? I know that ancillary exposure helps the show skew older than other popular Nickelodeon productions, but I'd think that's more along the lines of teenagers/young adults, or at least people who were teenagers/young adults when it first aired. If anything, I'd guess the anime aesthetic/association is a turnoff to that 35-54ish demographic that seems dominant on The Ringer.

As for SpongeBob, I'd think he's strong for the same reason Pikachu presumably was in their video game character contest: voters probably aren't personally attached, but he became a respected symbol anyways through sheer exposure.

I voted DKC because I was viewing this as a franchise poll, and while Chrono Trigger is the best game here, it's not the best franchise.

When I say old school, I meant the original Nicktoons (Doug, Rugrats, etc.). Of course SpongeBob is old school comparatively, but a different set of kids watched SpongeBob than the kids in the early 90s. The only reason I'm familiar with many of the Nick Toons that came out later is because I have a little brother 10 years younger than me. Demographics change quicker with kids cartoons.

yeah, the best SNES franchise poll was oddly stable over the course of a decade

the only major changes were Chrono Trigger went up 2% and Star Fox went down 2%

It's really weird Chrono Trigger isn't doing much better than the 2011 poll, since it was likely assumed Chrono Trigger back then wasn't quite as strong as it was in 2015. 2011 Chrono Trigger probably would have been closer to what it did in 2009 where it looked kind of bad.

I always thought that assumption was off-base, and that CT was just the victim of bad bracket placement a few contests in a row, like running into Missingno in round 1, or that Crono/Magus/Pikachu match.

Nah I think there was just a big site shift or something between '09 and '10.

The BGE3 results line up a good deal better with GOTD1 than with BGE2. Granted the latter was a four-way contest.

Having said that I would not be surprised if you were right. I think the problem was that CT stuff looked considerably weaker compared to the site's heyday where Crono was beating Mario handily.

I for one am not SHOCKED at the calcification of these results over the last ten years. From a certain perspective, it's kinda scary how nearly identical the results are for the last few polls. It's the grand proof that no one new comes to GameFAQs anymore.

In fairness Pikachu is a beast.

This isn't the kind of poll that will show a Chrono Trigger boost, because the Chrono Trigger boost wasn't a Chrono Trigger boost, it was the entire SNES boosting hard relative to the rest of gaming.
