I dont think Ellie is a good barometer. The Last Of Us is a poisoned well. She'll be weaker, Joel will be weaker, and the original is probably even weaker than when it got dunked on by Dark Souls.

Ellie did look a bit stronger than Joel in the last character battle, so there's that at least to go off of.

Well, yeah, maybe it's not the best character to measure things up; but even though TLoU may be irreversibly cursed now (Joel will definitely fall a bunch), Ellie's character growth was still very well-liked by many.

Time to finally get Yuffie in!

I'm having a hard time seeing TLoU2 boost Ellie any. Fans like sher before too, but she probably has some antivotes now.

yeah I wouldn't expect much from Ellie, or at least not for her to do appreciably better than last time

and yeah Peach's performance was secretly very good with how strong Alucard turned out to be

The winner would be debatable, heck Tifa might even be a darkhorse for some people...

Random hypothesis: female characters boosting on GameFAQs is indicative of a wider gaming culture shift towards female characters being normalized as something other than sex symbols, damsels in distress, or bit side characters. According to TJF, female characters probably should've gotten weaker as GameFAQs' core voterbase grew out of their horny teenage years, but the opposite has happened. It's less WaifuFAQs and more RespectsWomenFAQs...and also WaifuFAQs, but still. Jury is still out on RacistFAQs - need to see Barret in action again.

This post is a really good example of "I have a set of beliefs that I'm erroneously applying to the masses as if they all think the same way". Female characters doing well in a poll on a dead gaming site with no vote totals does not mean some cultural shift towards respecting women, because GameFAQs is a really good example of not being a representative sample.

Zelda wins laughably easily.

Female character battle would be boring.

Samus and Zelda smoke everyone except each other, and Tifa and Aerith are both stuck having zero debatable matches.

I think Tifa>Zelda is debatable now that FF7 Remake is here and BotW is a little older. Wouldn't take it myself though.

The thing here is Zelda would be the only Zelda rep. She's guaranteed to have inflated strength there and would probably be the #1 overall seed.

Eh, BotW2 could start getting actual details soon, which would render that moot.

A female contest is pretty boring other than seeing Samus/Zelda and Tifa/Aerith. We might get some interesting other matches like we did with Peach/Jill in 2006, but that contest showed it's largely not a good idea.

It could work if we can add female variants of characters like Commander Shepard or Pokemon with gender differences (or are more likely to be female).

I'd take all of Chansey, Jynx, Kangaskahn above Nidoran F. Would consider Miltank and Blissey too, if they weren't a generation later, but perhaps Gen 2 is good enough.

Of course Nidoqueen beats it as well.

I would anti-vote Jynx.

We still haven't had the Gen 2 starters and I think they have potential.

We had Lugia in 2013 who ended at around a low mid-carder at best. I don't see the starters doing much better, but they won't be weak fodder so I'm fine with giving them a shot.

I'll be 39 in a week, and I'm probably at the younger part of the demographic on The Ringer! They DO have quite a few writers that are younger than me though. But yeah, the results clearly scream "I played some games in the 80s/90s" lol

Looks like there's some rallying going on in Tony Hawk/Tom Nook, the match has 10k more votes than any other match.

Apparently they've got polls on their Twitter and Instagram pages as well, so I'm guessing it'll be the combined totals of the three.

Bowser and Luigi are losing (narrowly) on the Twitter polls.

Doesn't really look too different than our results outside of Cloud and Sephiroth...

We've always liked Square way more than pretty much everywhere else on the internet.

I mean, I'd certainly pick Tails over Wesker and after the 2018 debacle I'd hope board 8 has learned its lesson about underestimating him.

But I don't think Tails is gonna get an 86% against Wesker or much of anyone else here anytime soon.

Yeah, the overall results may not look too crazy, but the margins definitely are. As strong as Link is, even he's not getting 95% on PoP!

Yeah, I was just looking at the results. I'm also just looking at the website, so I guess we'll have to see what Twitter or whatever else does to the final results.

actually aside from the FF characters losing the most incongruous result is Leon Kennedy getting crushed by the GTAV guy

I've checked all the polls everywhere they have it up, and they're mostly in line with the main site, aside from the obvious Tom Nook rally. I'll be interested to see if it's enough to offset how badly he's getting beat everywhere else.

Is the GTA5 guy popular with GTA5 fans? IIRC there's more than one playable character as well.

Trevor is a likable guy. I think he has a bigger presence in GTA Online than the other two.

It also helps that GTAV is one of the best selling games ever.

I'd say Trevor > Franklin > Michael, in order of popularity.

Franklin might have rally potential due to the recent Lamar Roasts Franklin meme.

Well, I don't know what's weirder - seeing Auron lose to John Price, or Samus totally obliterating Dante...

I mean Samus would probably double Dante here so that's less surprising!

Batman getting obliterated by DK is interesting, since the voters are clearly distinguishing between Batman the film/TV/comic book character and Batman the gaming character.

and this has always been the big argument against fictional characters doing well here, and it's valid

(not to mention the strangely large amount of people who think we shouldn't have non-video game content on the front page of this website!)

GameSpot.com isn't even about games anymore with its pivot to other kinds of entertainment, and the site is worse off for it!
