Sonic doesn't suffer from bad games for the same reason lots of the top tier is immune to it.

He's very known.

Sonic suffers from a lack of new good games, as he's relying more and more on games like Sonic 2 that are clearly multiple steps behind everyone else's strongest games except Mega Man.

Yeah, Sonic survives off of nostalgia and design at this point. I'm not sure any Sonic game at this point could really move the needle for him because I imagine most of the site bailed on the series a long time ago.

I specifically singled out Sonic as a character who has suffered in these contests due to a glut of bad games. He performed worse against Snake in 2018 than he did in 2006, even though the latter was right after the Brawl/MGS4 announcements while the latter happened when Metal Gear was basically dead. Unless you think Snake scored some bizarre form of Smash Guest Character SFF on Sonic.

I dunno, I think a Super Mario Odyssey tier Sonic game could do it.

Especially since there's never been a 3D Sonic game that's that good.

True, Sonic '06 was about to come out. 2006 was probably Sonic's best year in these contests, featuring his only 1v1 win over another Noble Niner IIRC (poor Crono!).

Is it Sonic Colors?

I heard it was supposed to break the Sonic cycle, and its reception... Well, it was good! But maybe not Sonic-cycle-breaking good.

Sonic Colors was very good! And it broke the Sonic Cycle because it didn't do the things the Sonic Cycle does.

But I was referring to Sonic Generations, which just came and went for most people, unfortunately. Sonic Mania is also very good.

It would take Nintendo buying Sonic outright to move the needle for him, because then people would actually be hyped for Sonic.

Sonic had more good games in the 2010s than in the 2000s and it just didn't matter. The games are just a meme for a lot of people at this point.

A properly handled Sonic Adventure 3 could shake things up, though.

I think both Sonic and Kirby games have a lot of hidden potential. I'd love to see an actual 3D Kirby Adventure.

How would Castlevania: SotN fare against Super Metroid?

Given that those two games are the ones who specifically gave birth to a specific genre in gaming (and they're the strongest games in their respective franchises by a mile, too), would there be any kind of SFF, or SFF resistance?

I wouldn't bet on SFF happening there.

I know not all games are for everyone but Animal Crossing for Switch has sold over 31 million units. Seriously?

What I've seen with Animal Crossing is that it's one of those games that are actually indeed meant for everyone, even if it's leaned more towards being casual. It may not be GOAT material, but it's an extremely accessible game (a friend of mine says it's very relaxing to play it), and I haven't met a single person who dislikes it.

It's somewhat like Mario in terms of universal appeal, but lighter and more casual-friendly.

It's the perfect quarantine game

Huh, Chun-Li doing a lot better than she's done in the past in this poll. I guess it fits with how well she did in the last Character Battle.

She was winning early on. Girl power hour?

Female characters in general looked great last time. A lot of them looked outright better and a fair amount did not decline proportionally to everything else from their game.

If Cammy was in the poll, things would become pretty interesting.

Chun Li is outright winning in the USA!

(And Guile is disproportionately doing better there, which... makes sense.)

So the next Street Fighter character we should get into the contest is Blanka?

Though I would love to see M. Bison return, despite his performance in this poll.

One could easily make the case that Chun-Li's performance in 2018 was forwarned, and there have been other polls over the years that pointed towards a female character boost.

Random hypothesis: female characters boosting on GameFAQs is indicative of a wider gaming culture shift towards female characters being normalized as something other than sex symbols, damsels in distress, or bit side characters. According to TJF, female characters probably should've gotten weaker as GameFAQs' core voterbase grew out of their horny teenage years, but the opposite has happened. It's less WaifuFAQs and more RespectsWomenFAQs...and also WaifuFAQs, but still. Jury is still out on RacistFAQs - need to see Barret in action again.

Ellie is irrelevant because modern characters suck on this site almost universally.

But the females that did boost have TJF (or other features) so it's hard to say one way or another.

Here is the real question.

What does Ganondorf get on Sephiroth if this Chun-Li vs. Ryu result is legit, and how does that compare to X-Stats?

well again the X-Stats are screwy because Ganondorf's results are questionable at best

Raw X-Stat data says Sephiroth gets 57.52% on Ganondorf, which means Seph would get 65.09% on Chun-Li. He got 60.26% on Ryu, which means Ryu should get 56.08% on Chun-Li.

In this poll, Ryu is only getting 51.40% on Chun-Li. That means Ganondorf would get 57.73% on Ryu, which would give Ganondorf 47.01% on Sephiroth.

I have nothing to say about that other than I'm probably nominating Chun-Li next character contest just to try to get her in a seed where I can hype her to the third round or beyond.

I feel like Terra proved her worth last time, even losing in round 1.

I can get behind Cammy. She also has the best Street Fighter II theme.

I'd argue Ken is seriously LFF'ing Ryu, so it still makes sense to me.

Another thing is that if this result does apply to actual contests (not saying Chun-Li actually being close to Ryu, but I think we can take multi-way trends of Chun-Li approaching Ryu as applicable), is it possible that with another general boost Tifa manages to hold off Sephiroth despite Smash? Does Chun-Li threaten post-DMC5 Dante?

Does any of this matter, because Zelda vs. Samus is what decides the contest #2?

Oh, Ken is probably disproportionately affecting Ryu, but regardless, this is the closest he's ever come to losing this poll. He normally wins it handily.

I dont think Ellie is a good barometer. The Last Of Us is a poisoned well. She'll be weaker, Joel will be weaker, and the original is probably even weaker than when it got dunked on by Dark Souls.

Ellie did look a bit stronger than Joel in the last character battle, so there's that at least to go off of.

Another character to look for next contest? Peach. That 43% on Alucard looks a lot better when you realize that puts her not far away from Sora and Big Boss.
