Does it really matter? FF7R is beasting, so all the other games are fighting for scraps. The Mario name is a leg up on the others in this scenario.

A beating worse than it got from BotW because of a thing called SFF.

I cannot believe the Demon's Souls disrespect in this poll. It is a ground up remake even if it is the same game as the PS3 original compared to Mario which is just a lazy hd compilation that also had the audacity to exclude Galaxy 2.

The FFVII cast will absolutely get some boost. (well, the ones that are in the game already of course)

Not all people are thinking about how well the remake is done probably. Almost no one has a PS5 yet. Plus, SM64 in particular has a greater playrate than anything there on our site that's for sure.

Bingo. 3D All Stars is a magnet for votes for those who haven't played anything in the poll. And again, FF7R is destroying everything, so those apathy votes are going to make the difference in placing behind Demon's Souls and placing ahead.

Typical of Allen to exclude obvious entrants for absolutely no reason (Kingdom Hearts III in 2019) and make contest ruining decisions like the 2 games per series rule which in turn let a 100 fodder indie games in GotD2.

Kingdom Hearts 3 had a very good reason for not being in the GOTY polls last year - it wasn’t well received enough. It’s not entitled to get into a poll just because it has the words “Kingdom Hearts” in the title. Perhaps it should have been a better game if it wanted GotY consideration!

That’s not the case with Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition though. It’s one of the best reviewed games of the year and a lot if people here played it, so it is an odd exclusion. Last year however, there was an expansion poll, and it could qualify for that through Future Connected, so maybe that’s why.

On indies almost all of the indie games were either games that would have made it in regardless or modern classics with 90+ review scores and loads of awards. The only eyebrow raising ones I can recall were Slay the Spire and the Talos Principle... If you want to talk about games that shouldn’t have been there, look at the likes of Dying Light.

There was also Baba is You but yeah.

Fighting games did very poorly too. It was made worse because the fans were dumb and nominated the games they were currently playing over ones from the same developers people actually liked better. SFV and MK11 over UMvC3 and MK9 were the wrong choices.

I think Baba is You made sense, as it was a new game that rode a bit of hype on release, and it didn’t do too badly all things considered. You are right about fighting games - the traditional series really took a beating this past decade (though Tekken 7 got SFF’d).

Well that’s the point - trading on name power alone shouldn’t be enough. And bear in mind that that poll is from March. Sekiro is eight days old at that point - that result does not repeat.

When polls are being run without distance franchise power matters a lot more. The perfect case study is FFXV in 2016 - if you reran that year, would it even reach the final 3? I really doubt it. All this is to say I’d rather we vote on a curated selection of the best games rather than just the big franchises.

What game knocks it out? 2016 was a pretty weak year for games this site cares about.

Based on GOTD2: DOOM, Dark Souls III, and Uncharted 4. DOOM in particular just needed time for more people to play it, it looked quite good in the contest. In the GotY polls it lost to Overwatch.

Based on GotD the result is close enough to be in doubt.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - 24.22
Kingdom Hearts III - 22.49

I wouldn't take KH3 in a rematch but, 46% on Sekiro is way overqualified just to make the GotY field. Name power alone might not be enough but people actually like KH3 here and that should be.

Well yeah, that’s what I’m saying, if it’s a game of the year poll I’d rather choose from the best games rather than the strongest. I think KHIII could have replaced CTR in the PS4 poll though, as that’s a remaster.

Also, is it just me or is this FFVIIR performance kind of underwhelming? It’s a pretty weak poll, and FFVIIR is doing only 6% better than Tsushima which likely had better competition. It still certainly wins this year easily but not one of the strongest winners. If course it’s also possible that Tsushima is just legit, or this poll is stronger than it seems.

Or maybe Tsushima's is weaker than it seemed. We'll have to see!

It's difficult to get a high percentage in an 8-way poll, especially since FFVIIR has to combat entries with name recognition. Also outside of Hades the strength in GoT's group is pretty weak. Would Cyberpunk even finish in the top 5 here?

yeah I'm not convinced Hades is that strong quite yet

even with all the buzz and some good numbers Hades is not really a game I can ever see doing all that well here. does it even beat Bastion 1 v 1?

It feels like it got a lot more popularity than Bastion did, and its fans like it more too. The only thing holding it back at this point is that it's not on Xbox or Playstation. When/if it gets ported to those I'd be quite confident in it being stronger than Bastion.

I’m relatively bullish on Hades. Not like a worldbeater, but I think it easily beats Bastion already, give it a few years to get stronger and come out on more platforms and I think it will be the strongest indie. People really love that game.

It might be in a few years but I'd be skeptical of its strength right now.

Yeah, if Hades had strength now it wouldn't have been crushed by Ghost of Tsushima. Like maybe GoT will end up being respectable, but not to the point where getting around 38% on it makes you respectable.

I guess we'll see how well it stacks up against Animal Crossing.

I'm actually quite surprised Hades isn't weaker than Nioh 2 or Dying Light 2, given how extremely niche it is.

Yeah, that was fast. Super streamlined GotY this year. Probably a bit too streamlined since it means a lot of games just never show up.

I think it would be weird if the first overall GotY poll contained only 3 games, so I think there's potential for multiple games from the first 3 polls to make it into the overall GotY poll. Probably the top 3 games from both New Franchises and Sequels and Spinoffs, plus FFVII Remake for a 7 game overall GotY poll could be possible.

I'm not sure what other games need to show up that didn't. It was a slow year.

Eh, the remake/remaster selection is a bit odd, but it is what it is.

Sequels and spin-offs is definitely missing a few. DOOM Eternal probably being the biggest one, but Nioh 2, Origami King, Valhalla, Hyrule Warriors and honestly Microsoft Flight Simulator all deserved mention, among probably a fine bunch more. By far most of the big releases in this day are in this category so it makes little sense to have as many options from that one as the other two.

Of course you can say that none of these games would have come close to winning either way, but in that case then why there's really no point in having more than just a final poll to begin with.

Yes, Hades is not niche at all. It’s pretty mainstream - it was top of the eshop for like two months.

In addition to the games mentioned above, Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition, WoW Shadowlands (both could have been in an expansion poll), Genshin Impact (would fit in a mobile poll), Star Wars Squadrons, Astro’s Playroom... It wasn’t that slow it just didn’t have a lot of big RPGs and first party Nintendo games, though to be fair that’s what GameFAQs likes.

Actually, speaking of Nintendo, Pikmin 3 Deluxe wasn’t in Remakes/Remasters either - it is weird that neither of the two really good Nintendo rereleases got in but the less well received ones did.

If we get three games from the first two polls and one from the remake poll, I predict this result:

FFVIIR > AC:NH > GoT > Hades > Y:LAD > TLOUP2 > CP2077

Hades and Y:LAD I'm iffy about, but I feel pretty good about the rest.

Looks like I did. I didn't expect Allen to include that game today because of how far back it was from FFVII Remake. P5R was more than tripled by FFVII Remake.

With the way these results look right now, we'll be getting a 3-way GotY poll tomorrow.

Imagine going back a year and saying Cyberpunk and TLOU2 wouldn't even make the finalists poll.

Then say they'd lose to a Yakuza game and a Persona re-release.

Well, FF7R looks like it's going to win GOTY comfortably, but I guess how good this is depends on how highly you think of Animal Crossing.
