I don't see how this follows. Wouldn't P4G not have been allowed in GotD 2 if it really counted as Persona 4 for contest purposes?

I meant in terms of strength. Voters seemed happy to vote for P4G as if it was Persona 4. However, in PotDs Persona 5 Royal isn't nearly as strong as Persona 5.
My bracket looked like random picks compared to his.
Congrats to azuarc for winning the GotD 2020 Guru Contest!

I thought P5R was doing alright when i checked the poll. Funny that RE3 didn't make the list though.

I think in terms of Game of 2020, people are going to be much harsher on Royal than they would be for P4G in GotD.

The one thing Golden had going for it in GotD was that people probably didn't pay much attention to release dates, and may not have realized that P4 was a 2008 game. It's also a game that took a bit of time to gain momentum, so it's very likely a good portion of the site did play it between 2010 and 2019 and voted accordingly, regardless of whether they played Golden or the original version.

Meanwhile, everyone knows Persona 5 Royal isn't really an original 2020 game. Ironically, it's losing all that ground to a Remake of a 1997 game.

Oh. Well, it's not surprising that P5R doesn't nearly measure up to Persona 5 in any sort of GotY poll here, as remakes and remasters have hardly ever come close to the original's strength in said polls before. Presumably, that's because lots of prospective voters think a game should truly be a release of its year to be GotY material.

The more interesting question is why P4G functioned as a perfect proxy for Persona 4 in GotD 2 given that, and even though HGSS didn't function as a perfect GSC proxy. I have a few ideas:
  1. that the extra voters in contests versus GotY polls tend to have played few games in a given year, and don't care much about whether or not a given game truly belongs to its year/decade
  2. that Persona 4's fanbase is dedicated and passionate enough that its fans will pretty much vote for it regardless of whether or not they see it as a 2010s game - for what it's worth, P4G was one of the very few exceptions to the GotY rule I mentioned above, at least relative to Persona 4's showing in the first GotD
  3. (rather self-evidently) that nostalgia is a major component of Pokémon's strength unlike Persona 4, and HGSS was inevitably going to take a hit from not having that regardless of how much the voters who did play it like it

That's a very good point I didn't quite consider before, which also helps to explain the aforementioned GotY rule. Persona 4 already rose from 29% on Resident Evil 4 to 35% on Twilight Princess in the five years between GotD and BGE 3 alone, and I would expect it to have improved further with Persona 5 bringing a surge of new players and interest in general to its predecessor.

FFVIIR looks pretty mortal here. I fully expect Animal Crossing New Horizons to be the strongest Animal Crossing game, but not a titan or anything. A well-received Cyberpunk could definitely end up as our game of the year. I have to wonder what would have happened without the TLOUP2 leaks though, because after playing it I can say with confidence that those fully controlled the reaction to that game. It definitely has a lot of audience overlap with FFVIIR so I have to wonder what this result would look like in that case.

Before the game came out, I'd agree with you, but the game is pretty widely considered a disappointment by critics and fans.

Cyberpunk really doesn't look that good to me. It feels like it's trying to be a lot of different games but will ultimately fall short.
I thought based on everyone's post-contest analyses that The Last of Us Part II wouldn't be doing well enough to get in 3rd place.
For the best videogame commentary story on the Internet (sometimes featuring GameFAQs poll of the days and contest discussion) visit https://www.koopatv.org
That's mostly due to the competition. Without the backlash, TLOU2 would probably be a strong second place.
Congratulations to azuarc for winning the guru challenge
Given that it just came out and definitely is not getting many respect votes it would definitely do much better, I imagine mainly at FFVIIR and P5R’s expense. This poll could have looked more like a three way race in that situation.

I have to imagine that as more people actually play it and the outrage dies down, it will do a lot better at the end of the year.

Nah, the outrage is coming from people who won't play it, so that isn't going away. Not that it matters for these polls because you can't anti-vote.

And yes, there are people who play it and hate it, too. They intentionally created a divisive game, after all.
I honestly really struggle to see how, if the leaks don't happen, people who can stomach the first game object to the second. Even the statements ND made about the game being intentionally divisive were also made about the first.

They really weren't mucking about when they called this one "Part II". It really is more of The Last of Us in many, many ways. That's not to say it's perfect, I have some thoughts about the way it is structured I will get into both in a more appropriate topic and when I have actually finished it.

Among those who have actually played it, I haven't seen any degree more hate than any other big release. Not to say that it isn't there or that there isn't criticism, but the disparity in the discourse around this game has never been more obvious. I haven't really seen a lot of people declaring it to be better than the first. I mean, I'm sure they exist, but it's going to wind up being less popular than the original overall.

Most surprising to me is how terribly Halo Infinite is doing. Though I don't think they've actually said much if anything about that game yet. Being under an Assassin's Creed in 2020 is real bad.

it’s like Cyberpunk’s situation but way less popular

If Dying Light 2 actually lives up to its ambition and comes out this year, it will do much, much better at the end of the year. However those are two incredibly large ifs!

Halo Infinite was also the big surprise for me. This is supposed to be Microsoft’s Breath of the Wild in terms of importance and role. With that said, a lot of it is probably down to how little they’ve shown.

We don't have that many games contests, and two of them were divided by era and two were divided by decade, which kept a lot of games out.

2015 is the only "true" games contest we've ever had.
