People tend to forget Melee isn't that strong. I suppose stopping Starcraft to win the 128 division and getting rallied a lot in 2015 hid the fact well.
Guinness Book of World Records is the name of the diary that belongs to Advokaiser, the winner of the Character Battle X guru contest.

yep the SNES being part of 1991 was the biggest reason I took it over 1994 and it never showed up in any match pics augh

pretty sure I could've finished on the final leaderboard if that match comes through for me and 1997 doesn't get jobbed in an epic fashion the likes of which we've rarely seen

My main memory of Rivals other than the Trainers was yoblazer getting eliminated from the Guru on literally the second day of the contest because he took Jill/Nemesis over Kirby/Meta Knight!

what a chalky bracket
I think I predicted that's exactly what would happen during the first episode of the podcast, too (that I originally had Kirby, would fanboy switch to Jill at the last moment, and it would cost me everything). And I still wound up on the top 50!

I guess Trainers vs Ryu/Ken was hyped at the start, but we could see the writing on the wall by the time we got the actual match. That era was the height of Pokefear.
LeonhartFour 5/11/2020 12:39:21 PM#306
yeah I believed in Ryu/Ken and Sub-Zero/Scorpion pretty hard because fighting games are ALL about rivalries

seeing them get utterly dismantled by the Trainers was sad
Advokaiser 5/11/2020 12:44:34 PM#307
My favorite match was actually Scorpion/Sub-Zero utterly destroying Leon/Ada.

But to each their own, I guess.

Mine too, maybe. It proved that the idea of rivalries really was being considered. Ryu/Ken also looked stronger than the sum of their parts... until they hit Pokemon.

I'm going to say something slightly controversial but in my mind the Smash games are like the Mario Kart games.

  • Your first one will always nostalgically be your favorite.
  • The newest one is actually the best one because the improvements have been incremental over time.

As your average, casual GFaqs voter, it's Ultimate > Melee no question. Same way it's MK8 > any other MK game.

(I remember feeling damn confident in Brawl > Melee back during whatever contest that was for exactly this reason.)

The people clinging onto Melee are the same ones who cling on to MK64 or, god forbid, the original SMK.

It's not that the older games in the series are without merit. Whether you're talking Smash or Mario Kart there are definitely some unique, fun things about each installment. But the average person doesn't really give a s*** about that. Smash is the newest Smash and Mario Kart is the newest Mario Kart.
"That was unnecessarily dramatic". - NY Mets motto (courtesy of InnerTubeHero)
I think people are still in the honeymoon phase with Ultimate. Remember how well Brawl did after it had come out? I think Ultimate would beat Melee now, but not in a couple years.

Can confirm, started with Smash 64. But I still know it's the worst game in the series and it's my least favourite.

Same with Pokémon Blue!

Smash 3DS existed because it was a platform people at least owned. Wii U was the better experience, but it was ultimately hampered by the fact that it was on the Wii U.

Ultimate > SSB43DS = SSBM > Brawl > original

(just talking about preferences...used to go Brawl > Melee but it was ultimately a more replaceable game than Melee)

I feel like Melee was plenty replaceable for a lot of people! I know I didn't go back to it after Brawl!

honestly Melee, Brawl, and Ultimate are pretty interchangeable for me because I have attachments to them for different but valid reasons that the others don't have
Ultimate would beat Melee but is indirectly weaker.
It's Reyn Time.
I enjoyed watching the GT and Watchmojo countdowns of the best years in gaming but basing a whole contest around that was dumb.

As for Smash, I seriously swear I played Brawl so much for a year after it came out, and then barely played it again afterwards. I played a lot of Melee in late 2010 just for the heck of it (it was because I had to rely on a friend to unlock all characters and stages and finish every event match, so I wanted to be able to do all that myself), but since then I have had a hard time getting into Smash period.

The best part of Smash for me was introducing me to all those classic Nintendo games which I eventually played and became big favorites of mine.

Literally, the best part of Years was getting to do match pictures of games I normally wouldn't get the chance to do, but even that managed to be controversial because of what happened to 1997.

I don't really think most people's first Smash game was the original, at least not here. Melee was the majority of people's introduction to Smash, followed by Brawl (although obviously Brawl here wasn't anyone's first experience with the series, so maybe the original falls in line here).

The idea is not bad at all, imo. A well-managed Years, as well as having it as a side-contest or extra after a big one, would've been a great idea.

Many inconveniences dragged down its true potential, that's all.

Like, we joke all the time about wanting a Best Quote contest but really, who would actually be happy if something as wacky as that actually happened? It's like wanting Master Chief in Smash or something.

Bingo. Boil the site's base even further, and you have that little sitewide ranking where all the big social boards got together and ranked their games, and CT was number one, suggesting it was the most popular game across the day to day user base. That was my inclination that Chrono Trigger was on the rise, and that's why I took it the final four that year, and it's why I will always be salty for Melee ruining everything for me.

In terms of emotional impact and personal preference, though, that one's severely underrated.
