A lot of it just down to Nintendo being awful at Online, so with the additional demands on the servers due to quarantine, we now end up with #FixUltimate trending on Twitter for a signifcant time and prestigous tournaments being decided via no fault DQs.

To be fair to them, imagine having all the pressure in the world for you to maintain your top ten status in the only tournaments that can be held rn, which everyone is watching bc they're stuck at home... only to job out to Wifi Warriors who know how to play on like 10 millions frames of buffering while everyone dunks on you for 'falling off'

I'd be mad salty too

Yesterday a well-known pro player was down 2-0 in bracket. He stopped the match complaining about lag (his opponent had taken a lag test previously and passed). His opponent was DQd because the squeaky wheel gets the grease as long as people know who you are, and the pro player went on to win the tournament.

In a previous tournament, there was a mid-Grand Finals disconnect and the winner was decided by community vote.

Yeah, Mario Kart 64 is not taking down the top players in this contest. It might take down some of the weaker entries in the top 16, but if Goldeneye can't beat Skyrim (even with Skyrim losing a bit of luster, I don't think that result flips), I don't think think Mario Kart 64 can beat one of the top tier entrants in this contest like Dark Souls.

But it could probably get within 55/45 now.

I would like to see Mario Kart 64 get a legit chance to shine in a contest someday.

I know the video you're talking and tbf the buffering complaints are valid, I just don't think they're the game ruining thing the guy makes them out to be.

Yeah I'm not saying they aren't valid and a toggle would be nice. As someone who sucks at timing their inputs I actually really like the buffering but I get how it can get in the way of more skilled players. Again it's still kind of a minor thing. The Smash community gets really up in arms about every tiny flaw and often fails to appreciate the bigger picture of how insanely good Smash is as a package.

But yes online Smash fans are cancer. At in-person tournaments tho most ppl tend to be pleasant, although I have seen more than one controller launched in the past (and the TOs never seem to do s*** about these ppl so long as they play decently enough)

I used to go to Smash tournaments mostly just for fun, but sadly people playing for fun have been getting edged out in my local scene by players who take the game way too seriously. My one gripe with Smash Ultimate is that it's one of the best casual party games ever made yet it's extremely difficult to actually play that way since most people latch on to no items 1v1 battles on like 10 of the 100+ stages, and reject attempts to play just for fun. So I end up mostly having to play with newbies who just kind of SD repeatedly. Really wish there were more people who are both semi-decent at the game and are open-minded about playing with different rulesets. I find myself watching Alpharad videos and salivating with jealously that he has a friend group to play fun Smash with.

In retrospect, the people who said that Byleth might deboost Smash Ultimate may have been closer to the truth than I realized. The Smash fanbase is exactly the kind of fanbase to turn on a game with a metric s***ton of content because 1 character that they disapprove of was added.

This is also a problem. The loudest, most obnoxious voices ALWAYS rise to the top of the Smash community.

Now, bear in mind that the pro-community doesn't neccessarily align with how GameFAQs votes. There's still a chance Ultimate wins via being an enjoyable gaming experience that celebrates the nostalgia of one of the greatest extended universes in all of gaming, and has expanded to pay tribute to other great gaming legends like FFVII, Metal Gear Solid, Persona 5, among others.

I'd argue only a fraction of UIltimate's strength is going to be affected by the competitive community, but it's whether or not this puts it in striking distance for Odyssey or not.

It's just a matter of knowing the purpose of the local. I go to locals for the 1v1 competitive ruleset and to fight people at that level; I wouldn't expect someone who goes there to play 4 players with items on to have a good time, but that space isn't really there for them. Especially in Michigan, a lot of the locals here are pretty cutthroat.

Maybe you can talk to the community organizers in your area about maybe having a local dedicated to more casual play.

Brawl beating Melee in the GotD poll last time is a promising sign that casual players outweigh the more competitive types. Not saying necessarily every competitive player voted Melee or that every casual player voted Brawl, but those groups do generally align with those games during that time period.

I genuinely haven't had fun playing with items since Melee and none of my friends group have either. Ever since Brawl the items in Smash have gotten really, really strong to the point where many items are straight-up better than an entire character. In Smash 64 and Melee even the strongest items felt more like modifiers or bonuses that added twists that could be played around. Now you've got stuff like the Wind Bellows that just kills you for free.

Yeah that's kind of the problem. It started out as a more casual environment that still obviously did the tournaments with tournament rulesets but you could still play casual friendlies after getting knocked out. But the casual players just kind of got edged out as more well-known pros started coming to our locals, and it turned a lot of them off of Smash in general. I still try to get my old Smash casual buddies to play with fun rules occasionally but they've kind of been soured on Smash and mostly play puzzle games these days.

Welcome to the Nintendo hierarchy. Now, I'm not 100% certain that Ultimate trumps Odyssey in the hierarchy, and I actually think Kirby's been a fraud hidden behind fluky draws and waiting to get exposed for quite a while, but rSFF provides a very easy explanation if Ultimate wins.

Probably the best way of looking at the hypothetical MK64 question is: which games in the final 16 do you think it could take?
I would take it over every single one of the games you mentioned in this post, most likely even in this contest's setting. As for Dark Souls vs. MK64, I would probably take MK64 in an ordinary game contest, but I'd probably side with Dark Souls in this contest.

Melee and Brawl are if anything more divisive games than Ultimate. Ultimate kind of strikes a balance, but a lot of casual players hate Melee and a lot of competitive players hate Brawl. They're definitely the two games that leaned the hardest in those respective directions.
