Oh right, I forgot 95 had CT as its anchor.

96 would probably be a better choice, since Mario 64 was definitely a step below CT and FF7 in the adjacent years.

98, I still think would have a chance with just RBY, because it had some great depth beyond the headliners.

I mean, 95 is a legit intriguing scenario because it really would be just OoT and CT. That year has zero depth.
Ranticoot 4/20/2020 3:41:03 PM#152
1995 turned out to be really damn strong even though it had what is effectively one game

I don't think I want to see what 1995 with OoT looks like!

Actually, I think 1995 had some good depth when you had DKC2, Yoshi's Island, Earthbound, and Twisted Metal there.

But SBAllen leading with FULL f***ing THROTTLE made it seem like an absolute drought year when the Playstation was launching.

Eh, 95 had a bunch of low midcard stuff to back it up but it really was carried by CT.

Has it been mentioned yet that this is (I believe) the first contest nothing Final Fantasy related won their division, as well as the first time nothing FF related made it to Round 4 of a contest? That really goes to show how badly Square Enix has messed up the series this past decade.

This is true. There are some close calls when Cloud/Seph was removed from the main bracket. Vincent was the only one in 2005, though it was Squall he beat. In 2006 it was a good thing FF has better stronger female characters than most when the male division winners had to be Noble Niners. In 2018 Seph could do it himself, but then Tifa topped one of the strongest divisions and Auron had one of the weakest. Sephiroth also saved the series from this in 2013 after being one of the NN'ers people predicted to lose early and then the bracket collapsed completely.

1995 was definitely way stronger than that match against 1987 showed. That was Allen's biggest blunder of the entire contest. At that point in the contest, we were still only getting 4 games represented in the match picture, which proved to be very poor for years that had amazing depth.

We've seen voters being smart at times, but they were at their dumbest in the 1995/1987 match when many voters were simply choosing their vote based off the games in the match picture alone (treating it as a tag team games contest) and didn't have the intelligence to realize that 1995 had a lot more depth to it than just the games in the match picture. One round later, 1995 had a far better performance (just under 48% on 2001) when it got its full depth represented, but that was helped out by the match pictures showing off 8 games instead of 4.

I have no doubt if 1995 would have broken 60% on 1987 with its depth represented in the match picture, and probably could have gotten a doubling too.

BotW's really done it. 80+% again. As mentioned earlier, Link did this in 2004 with CATS-Ganonforf-Yoshi, but it's still neat to see again. AFther Link's path of bodies in 2004 though, he then faced Crono who got 37%.

So, DQ11 I have to think is capable of breaking 20+%, so if he did have we ever had an entrant who went four rounds deep with triplings? I have to imagine we've had something land four doublings in a row, but I'm not sure what -- Cloud was just 0.42% off from doing this in 2003 with CATS-Auron-Bowser-Sonic.

Have any other entrants done any of these before?
Ranticoot 4/20/2020 4:59:42 PM#163
I understand we don't like talking about it, ever, but in the rivals contest Link/Ganon tripled their first four opponents (80%+ on the first two).

And now we never talk about the rivals contest again. Hopefully.

Wow, this contest has really blurred my memory - it's made it seem like 80% beatdowns are so much more common than they traditionally have been. I think BotW will put up the tripling next round and further write its legendary story.

Anyway, time for the first big day of R3!
