speaking of soulsborne games. With so many indies in...no salt and sanctuary? I mean i dont rate it that much but is a decent game.
Celeste could THEORETICALLY come back but the chances are very slim. Comebacks are hard when you barely have trends or votes to throw around.

I guess I'll do what Slowflake did before and give my thoughts on who did and didn't do well in terms of expectations. Not gonna claim any official ground here, just thought I'd give my two cents.

Star of the Round - Super Mario Odyssey

Phenomenal championship performance, Mario Odyssey is a contender for taking down Smash Ultimate and being the overall #2 game in this contest, and would won most divisions had it been the 2-seed in those. Mortal Kombat has shown to have some actual strength here, and Odyssey putting 86% on it was shocking.

Runner-up - Super Mario Galaxy 2

It feels a bit of a cop-out to put another Mario game here, but the blowout here surprised me, even if the opponent is very weak, and makes me feel that Mario Galaxy 2 could put up a good fight against The Witcher 3 (though I think it still won't win).

Other winners:

Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Did its job and showed that it's still the favorite to win the contest.

Hollow Knight - Good performance over Tales of Berseria and shows that it has a shot against FFXV.

Bastion - Even if The Walking Dead has weakened, a lot of us didn't give this game a chance to make the upset. Good win.

Dragon Quest XI - Even with a very weak opponent, it was nice to see Dragon Quest pull out a stunning blowout for the first time.

DOOM - It takes incredible strength to get 86% of the vote, no matter the opponent. I was not expecting DOOM to pull of such a feat.

Smash Ultimate - Impressive performance against a fellow fighting game, even if not at the level of Mario Odyssey. It'll be an interesting debate and clash between those two first-party Switch games.

Minecraft - Never thought I'd see this game pull out a tripling on GameFAQs, but it pulled it off. It makes me think Minecraft actually has a bit of respect in this site.

Xenoblade Chronicles - To me I think Xenoblade's performance makes it the favorite to come out of its division. Big turnaround from its Round 1 loss five years ago.

Ori and the Blind Forest - Did just enough to get the win in a match where it was not expected to.

South Park: The Stick of Truth - Good to know that you're not turbofodder, South Park.

The Witcher 3 - Great performance, and shows that it's a contender for this contest.

Nioh - Solid win, certainly did better than expected.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - Good blowout and shows that it has a shot in taking down Persona 5 and winning the division.

Rocket League - I thought this would've been the kind of game to get anti-voted in GameFAQs, but it fought and won its match. Well done.

Metal Gear Solid V - The match shows that MGS still has strength it when it comes to GameFAQs polls.

Xenoblade 2 - Very respectable loss, it might've done damage had it been placed in a better bracket spot.

Pokémon HeartGold/SoulSilver - Good blowout that makes our single Pokémon entry to be reckoned with.

Rayman Legends - Even if it blows its lead here, putting up a fight and giving an entertaining match gets you on the winners' list.

Nintendogs 4/11/2020 2:10:45 PM#67
Turd of the Round - Dragon Age: Inquisition

Despite being the massive favorite with the average Oracle prediction being 60.95%, Dragon Age: Inquisition did a pitiful performance against an indie game that until very recently had been an Xbox console exclusive. The first DA game had shown some strength in the past, and Inquisition did well in the 2014 Game of the Year polls, so you'd think that it could very well at least beat Ori, but nope, it failed to do that and never even had the lead. Awful overall.

Runner-up - Sonic Mania

After Sonic 2's excellent performance in the last games contest, you would figure that Sonic Mania could do well in this contest, seeing that it's a beloved game that panders to 1990's nostalgia that GameFAQs dearly loves, yet it stinks up the joint against a Falcom game, a company that has not shown anything resembling strength in this site. The performance was so bad there's now some danger it could lose to Super Meat Boy.

Other losers:

The Walking Dead - Wasn't strong even at its prime, but now weaker than ever.

Fortnite - Disastrous performance no matter how you look at it. No amount of anti-votes can excuse that.

INSIDE - A contender for bottom feeder.

Fire Emblem Awakening - I thought it'd do a little better considering the kind of site we're in.

Call of Duty: Black Ops - More weaker and hated than ever.

Dota 2 - Horrible performance and shows that MOBA's are simply not welcome in GameFAQs. Quite a shame, really.

Undertale - A defending champion losing in the first round definitely earns a spot here.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - DK chokes again. Failing by this much in NintendoFAQs gets you a spot here.

Splatoon 2 - When you're the latest entry on a big AAA Nintendo IP released on the Switch, you just can't get an SFF beating from a Wii game like that. Hopefully Splatoon gets another chance in a future contest.

Death Stranding - lol

Destiny - also lol

The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth - Yeah, you're just not that strong.

Tomb Raider - Thought it'd put up a better fight even if it wasn't going to win, but it did meh

Street Fighter V - When you're the latest entry in a flagship fighting game franchise and get nearly doubled by Animal Crossing, you suck and you know it. No recent AC release can excuse that.

The Witness - Another contender for bottom feeder.

Dead Cells - You'd think the game could've done better considering the circumstances, but Dead Cells was just dead in its match.

Terraria - Another indie that I feel went bust, even if it wasn't expected to win.

Fate/Grand Order - Getting a beating from Journey nets you here. Please don't come back here ever again, gacha.

Uncharted 2 - Failing to put up a fight in a debated match usually puts you in these lists.

Celeste - When other comparable critically and commercially acclaimed indie games do their job in this contest, while you struggle against a series that has only shown to be
fodder in past polls and contests, you warrant a spot here.

Whew, that's all. I think I'll head out now.

Nice write-ups, Nintendogs.

Really looking forward to FFXV/Hollow Knight tonight. I have HK winning in my bracket, an upset I took primarily because of Noctis s***ting the bed last contest. I do think FFXV should be the favorite, since it'll be propped up by the FFVII remake halo effect, but I think it'll be close.

Anyway, Undertale, Binding of Isaac, and Terraria are 3 of the 6 brackets I've guessed wrong so far and I had Celeste winning this one as well so I'm maybe a bit salty. But yeah, the trend I'm seeing is that pixel art indie games are way less popular on gamefaqs than they are outside of it. Celeste was a GotY nominee on several sites in 2018, while Rayman Legends seems to be more of a "yeah, it's pretty good" type of game.

Although as Advokaiser pointed out, Binding of Isaac was probably less to do with BoI being an indie and more a case of me underestimating gamefaqs' boner for soulsbourne games.

you gotta remember when looking up these crazy sales figures on some indie games that they are very cheap, go on sale all the time, and also release on mobile (where often the majority of the sales are)

for reference, for a big AAA releases, even going over 10 million is exceedingly rare and usually seen as a colossal success.

Terraria was billed as the 2D alternative to Minecraft, and Minecraft is the bestselling game of all time. It took a small piece of the pie and that piece was 30 million copies. And there's still no real 2D equivalent to Minecraft outside of Terraria, so it just keeps being relevant.
