GSC's strength comes from things that can't be replicated in HGSS. HGSS wouldn't be anywhere near the original GSC in an all-time games contest either. Like FireRed and LeafGreen are RBY remakes but no one would even entertain the idea that they would be even a fraction as strong as RBY. I think it's much better to see HGSS as a potentially top end modern Pokemon game. Probably okay in strength but don't try picking it over Skyrim.

HGSS is my favorite Pokemon game ever, and I will enjoy it crushing overrated trash like Nier :)

I mean, the Celeste gain would have been slightly less bad had it not been preceded by a Rayman cut, but we're probably good.

well that was a 60% update for Celeste

so if it can do a few more in that general range it'll be fine

I do just want yo say though, this 8-pack is a murderer’s row of terrific games. Probably the best in the entire contest. Three of my favourites of the decade are right here, and all but Hearthstone are really amazing.

Some of the really bad fodder blowouts have some 75-90 swings (looking at Skyrim here), but I guess that's not quite the same.

Diablo 3/VLR had some giant swings e.g. 22:35:05 Diablo takes with 54.4%, 22:45:05 Diablo takes with 73.21%.

Either of the Unova gens would have been worthwhile to include in the bracket as well. You can tell a lot of passion went into them.

On the flip side, though, I still find it hilarious how Sword and Shield were snubbed.

I'm glad this is a close match. It felt like people were pretty confident in their predicted winner beforehand. To see two good games from the same genre duke it out is pretty satisfying.

The only thing missing is a really questionable match that makes HG/SS looks good on the surface.

Yeah, back in GotD GSC lost when it turned out that its opponent was unexpectedly strong. The same might happen to HGSS. HGSS might turn out to be as strong as expected but it just isn't enough because its opponent was even stronger.
