With R1 basically over, I see some people debating what turd of the round is. Tales, Isaac, I get the argument for those...Celeste, totally disagree with...Dragon Age, I get but it doesn't surprise me much...The Witness has an argument to be the weakest of the contest...

...but in my book, Undertale told other games to hold its beer more than any other game here. Turd of the round material for sure.

Star of the round is probably Mario Odyssey.

isaac is a turd of youre clueless about what games gamefaqs likes. How the hell can you be a turd losing to a AAA souls like when youre a no name indie?

easily dragon age. Losing to what was an xbox exclusive for a while.
ZeldaTPLink 4/11/2020 10:05:53 AM#454
Turd is sonic.
Star is Ori

Turd of the round: The Walking Dead(epic fail wow) or Undertale(lol owned)
Star of the round: DOOM or Mario Odyssey

This feels so much less hype than RL/DBZ despite being the clearly more exciting match by-the-numbers. A little reminder that the nature of the entrants matter a LOT.
UshiromiyaEva 4/11/2020 10:12:33 AM#457
I care about both of these games more than either of those games, lol.
Turd is Undertale just like Draven was turd last time. Even if disregarding the stigma of a former champion losing in R1, most of us had it winning two rounds, so it cost B8ers more points than any other loser anyway.

Stars were plentiful, but I'll go ahead and give my vote to Hollow Knight for jumpstarting the INDIES trend and for putting what was an open-and-shut R2 match into serious question.
Undertale did fine, although I was worried about it losing to Octopath the moment the bracket came out so I wasnt surprised when it happened

Dragon Age is the only R1 match where my reaction was 'lol seriously'
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
shane15 4/11/2020 10:17:30 AM#460
Is this the start of the Celeste steam train or will Rayman win the next update and increase the gap to 30 again...

Yeah pretty much this.
Surprisingly, Octopath was a bigger Guru upset than Ori (I mean that's really surprising to me). Even if many of us understood the possibility of Undertale laying an egg, few people actually took the chance on Octopath. More people risked it with Ori.
Leonhart4 4/11/2020 10:19:40 AM#463
Dragon Age is definitely the turd of the round. I'd be willing to give the star to Odyssey for making a lot of us reconsider a match we thought would be open and shut.
I second Sonic Mania as a turd of the round contender. That was a Pyrrhic victory if I ever saw one.
The music was thud-like.

Matter of opinion. I think this match has much more hype. Platformer vs platformer, highly acclaimed indie vs. Ubisoft's mascot platformer.

Well, I expected Undertale to get anti-voted, but I went with Shovel Knight instead.
Undertale had the contest winner's aura going for it to boost prediction numbers but there was always a good chance it lost, even without antivotes. I've said it before, but I think Octopath is the strongest 'lower seed in the match' entrant in the bracket outside of Mario Kart 8.

It's the biggest turd that actually won its match. I would agree with that much.

Uhhh rayman is still winning? It had a 30 vote lead like 3 hours ago.
I'm not sure what people were expecting from Sonic Mania. It could still win next round.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.
tgs2 4/11/2020 10:27:10 AM#471
I would have Dragon Age #1 with Undertale a conditional #2 barring round 2, and Mania #3. If Octopath gets its doors blown off by Shovel Knight in R2 somehow, Undertale is probably a lock for turd of the contest?
plasmabeam 4/11/2020 10:27:32 AM#472
Turd is definitely Donkey Kong. Can't break 43% against DMC5 on NintendoFAQs? C'mon.

Star is either Horizon Zero Dawn or Witcher 3.

More than 62%! It could still win, but that's a bad performance by a mainstream series on a niche game.

Definitely don't agree with Undertale getting the turd. The fandom's been dead for 3 years now, we have two polls showing a large portion of the people on this site will never touch it because of the 2015 contest, and it's been quiet on social media sites for years. There was no hype or energy for anybody to come in and help it out, and given that this site generally has unfavorable views on it, it's base strength was not looking good either.

I'm not going to say it was an easy call (though I do personally think it was an easy call >_>), but Undertale making it to round 3 was... certainly optimistic thinking for anybody who had it going there.
You felt your sins weighing on your neck.
Sonic Mania is very lucky to be facing Meat Boy next round. It'd get the doors blown off of it by any other second round opponent it could have gotten.

Fair enough, though hindsight is also at play here. More people in these parts (and I believe that's usually our general metric when assigning Stars and Turds) actually took the risk on Ori than on Octopath. Undertale was the biggest Guru upset of the round and it cost people more points, as hardly anyone took Dragon Age to win two matches.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses only beating South Park: The Stick of Truth by 66% is not that impressive either from a supposed favourite.

But turd of the round? Has to go to Dragon Age.

South Park might not be that weak:

The problem Three Houses has is it only did okay when its competition went big.

Does anyone know the biggest vote lead that Celeste and Rayman have had so far?
Well done to Advokaiser for finishing 104 places above me in the 2018 CBX Guru Contest!
The Sonic series' strongest games, which are WAY stronger than the rest of the series, are standard midcarders. Sonic diehards played and liked Mania but how many of them are there left? Brand name doesnt mean you're suddenly worth anything - and the brand isn't even that strong to begin with. I'm honestly not sure where people thought this strength for Sonic Mania could materialize - as an example, Super Mario Maker was a much bigger deal and came from a bigger brand and it sucked.
Black Turtle did a pretty good job.

I don’t think you can really have much definitive in a contest where half the entries are so weak they don’t deserve to make a bracket. I used to do huge round 1 winners/losers and this is like, Doom crushed Inside so woohoo I guess?

It's a shame they had the "2 games per series" limit. I get why that rule was implemented, but it also ensures an abundance of fodder.

I guess said wins weren't convincing enough for Rayman Legends to build itself a solid lead. Even a 51-49 score in its favour would've been good enough at this point in time, I think.
