Then I'll repost some thoughts here.

I don't think MHW > Sekiro looks so obvious as most do. I don't think you can just say "BD would beat Ni no Kuni without trouble" and can it a day. Ni no Kuni is no longer of relevance if it ever was, but everyone remembers it here and knows it for being the game Studio Ghibli animated. I don't think it's something a lot of games would look good against barring the most universally aclaimed high seeds or big franchise names. If you know little about the game it's up against, then "Ni no Kuni looks good" probably helps it a decent bit. It just doesn't seem like something that gets blown our easily despite losing to most of the field.

MHW can beat Sekiro of course, but I don't think a BD vs Ni no Kuni match would line up with that. Also, people in these topics give BD way more credit than it deserves, and I'll happily repeat that even more. It's worth nothing here and not something Nintendo drones vote for because it's on Nintendo consoles at all. Much bigger chance Monster Hunter benefits from such tbh.

I'm not thrilled with how much percentage Sekiro tanked overnight though. Now it's close enough that the question pretty much is who you take between BD and Ni no Kuni.

Will gladly take a wrong pick today.

Went with Walking Dead, but Bastion's the better game

That’s not impossible at all.

I don’t buy that Ni no Kuni looking good does more for it than all the myriad “I’ve heard good things about x but haven’t played it” does for almost every game in the bracket.

And while most voters have watched and liked some anime, if only because of how big anime blew up during their childhood, the bulk of them are not really anime fans and the group who would really care about Ghibli’s involvement is not large.

assuming those that do care would vote for it based on the Ghibli connection but not actually ever play the game or at least look into it a little more is also sketchy.

Sekiro has outright lost updates, too.

Well, it’s a Nintendo game for all intents and purposes (they also localised it I believe). I’d say in terms of contests it’ll be more Nintendo than Square, same with Bravely Default.

I can't overstate how many people on GFAQs were let down by Octopath and how quickly it faded from the discourse. If you think literally nothing but being a Square/Nintendo game matters, then yah I guess it can do something.

It's a Square JRPG on a system that doesn't have a whole lot of those (at least new ones) and it barely mustered enough noms for a 14 seed. That should already be setting off alarm bells

I'm in Europe for this contest as I wanted to spend some time abroad, (and it's been great being stuck indoors for weeks due to a global pandemic), and our clocks move forward tonight at 9pm Eastern.

So effectively the next matches will only be 23 hours long for most of Europe, right?

The match will have the same length, it's just that you skip an hour but then start the next match an hour later.

The US already went through daylight savings, so the start time wlll likely be 1AM (GMT) once clocks move forward, one hour later.

Would Spelunky have been eligible? It was released originally in 2008, but the remade version that actually got sold for money came out in 2012.

Guess it depends how 'big name' is big name. Into the Breach, Wargroove, Owlboy, those games made some waves. Guacamelee is probably the most high profile indie snub along with Transistor

unless i’m missing it, Limbo didn’t make the bracket. That game was a pretty big deal at the time. Also Papers, Please.

also it really depends where you draw the line on “big name”. I think there’s a bunch that are of similar notability to stuff that did make the bracket that just didn’t make the cut.

Guacamelee! deserves to be there. Probably just got overshadowed by the other Metroidvania indies (HK, Ori, Bloodstained)

Stunned by Bastion winning this, especially given that it came out in 2011. I'm guessing TWD TV show hate was the murder weapon. Thanks a lot, AMC.

LIMBO got superseded by INSIDE, which is the right call. Arguably Papers, Please got superseded by Obra Dinn. Into the Breach didn’t get in, but FTL did.

i just remembered another pretty notable one that has fallen out of our collective memory: Fez.

I hope Phil Fish is ok wherever he is now

Oh right Fez! Totally forgot that one. That was a huge deal when it came out then Phil Fish frankly buried it. I hope he is okay but it’s fair to say that Fez’s legacy is basically nothing now.

I'm surprised Untitled Goose Game didn't make the cut.
