The thing with something like Edith Finch is that you could tell me every game in the bracket gets 70% on it and I would go "Eh...I could see it I guess?"

Not saying I'm taking Hollow Knight over FFXV, but I guess it's more that FFXV's result kind of doesn't mean anything?

Since someone asked how Three Houses sold relative to other JRPGs in the bracket, it would definitely be up there at over 2.5 million as of the end of last year. It has likely passed Persona 5 by now.

The highest selling JRPG here (other than HGSS I guess) is certainly Dark Souls, followed by FFXV. Then it’d probably be Dark Souls III, DQXI, then Sekiro, then Nier Automata, though DQXI is obviously very disproportionately centred around Japan.

I mean if you thought Hollow Knight was going to beat XV then this is probably a pretty okay result? As weak as Berseria is in this field just being able to break 60% on something with some vague, small amount of series value might be respectable?

Plus it's not as though XV will be a bastion of strength itself. Probably.

I agree with War here. Edith Finch is a beloved but obscure game, probably one of the least played in the bracket even though it has been free on PS+, Game Pass and Epic. It is unlikely to beat much, but I doubt it gets truly blown out, except by BotW which is going to destroy this contest.

To the guy who said they quit Edith Finch after two hours because it was boring: the game is two hours long and the ending is most of the point, you may as well finish it.

Also I really think we aren’t giving enough credit to how amazing that 85% is. The Outer Worlds was no slouch in GotY, it nearly beat Sekiro, and it is very much a “GameFAQs game” from a well-regarded developer with a good bit of representation in this contest. BotW could well easily pass 80% on Halo too at this rate, and even when you account for the Undertale effect Halo looks alright (LiS will only have gotten stronger since 2015 when it had only just released its last episode). BotW is looking like a true monster here.

dark souls is as much of a jrpg as Metal Gear Solid V

Yeah, I'm sure Hollow Kinght would win a star of the day vote, but I'd vote for BotW. In a time where blowouts are near impossible it's killing a well respected game despite being perhaps the most expected winner we've had in our games contests.

Also i totally regret my FE> xenoblade pick now.

i think Xenoblade takes that division.

It’s an RPG made in Japan. The label and distinction between JRPG and WRPG are more or less meaningless these days. Skyrim has much more in common with Xenoblade than Mass Effect 2 for instance. And if you want exclude Souls games I don’t see how you can include Fire Emblem!

Turd of the day is Halo, no question about it. It can't even break 60% against a bottom 10 game in the bracket.

The other 3 matches are going almost exactly as expected.

Also, I'd be shocked if BotW doesn't quadruple Halo next round. FFVII nearly quadrupled Halo 5 years ago, and I'd wager the gap between FFVII and BotW is smaller than the one between Halo 1 and Reach, not to mention how much more the series has probably dropped in the interim.

The whole appeal of Xenoblade as far as I gather is that it's a JRPG with WRPG trappings.

Hollow Knight is generally probably better known than the Tales series these days. Or at least not a whole lot less known.

I guess the Halo result is less because Life is Strength is suddenly not turbofodder and more because Halo really sucks.

nothing. Im not relating to any matches today. Just the whole buzz and feeling around the recent direct AND the fact that i was 50/50 split on that match. It could go either way

traditional rpgs will always be more popular that strategy ones.

you can get away with calling Monster hunter and dark Souls jrpgs even though thats silly in itself.

fire emblem is a jrpg its a sub genre of a jrpg.

Sekiro is in no way an RPG at all. That is a 100% pure action game.

Trust me, I got the platinum trophy. There is no powerleveling out of jams in that one. You get good or you f***ing die.

outer worlds probably beats halo reach.

i think people dont realise halo reach isnt all that popular at all. Any halo game without masterchief isnt going to he strong even amongst halos.

so the notion that BOTW might or might not quadruple halo reach isnt even a question. Its going to beat down halo harder than outer worlds

Yes, Halo’s night vote is awful on account of it being such an NA-focused series.

I’m not going to win this Sekiro debate but I’d say it’s on the line of Action RPG and Action Adventure, I thought about not having it but whatevs. It’s more that RPG is less of a meaningful distinction than ever!

Life is Strange is doing better in Europe, except for Ireland for some reason. I think it’s both LiS being better and Halo being a bit worse.

Yah, I opened the country by country breakdown and sure enough Life is Strange is winning in most of Europe. Guess they really are classier over there

I wonder if rereleasing Master Chief Collection on PC was what gave Reach enough of a boost

For what little it's worth Dontnod (LiS devs) are actually French

Oh gawd yeah. I had to grind and grind and grind endgame stuff, finally found a good path where you can shiv the two warring sides and just rake it in, and it still took forever.

Game’s such a damn rush, though. Every boss fight I’m doing f***in fist pumps and high fiving myself. They really got this one right.

Yep, which is part of the reason it has such a good day vote as well!

Kim Jong-Un is a big fan of Breath of the Wild, Life is Strange, Final Fantasy XV, and Hollow Knight.

Speaking of Sekiro, I apparently took Wrath of the White Witch over it.

No idea why... This will likely be my worst pick of the bracket...

I'm always amazed at how well Zelda performs despite the antivote it gets from me and any others who despise the franchise and its dominance in these contests.

Their "internet" is some giant disconnected Intranet that can access like 20 sites, it makes the China firewall looks like a joke.

I think Halo:Reach winning is same reason FFXV is winning, they are up against games that are small, games that focus on something specific and not being full of action and things to do. Regardless of quality also those two franchise have huge fanbase, while the other games dont have any fanbase, they are simply games that people liked but no dedicated fanbase to mass vote for them. Edith Finch imo is better than FFXV. I still predicted FFXV and voted for it just to win LOL.

I don’t want to be too hard on Halo Reach here. It is an extremely well regarded game, probably not far off Halo 3 and above Halo 2 in popularity. It was Bungie’s farewell to the franchise and is seen as the last great Halo game. The Steam port was pretty high profile as well.

However, it is important to remember that even though it has gotten progressively more international over time, this is still a very North American focused site. If you weighted the results geographically to be more reflective of the overall gaming audience, Life is Strange probably wins. And that game is no joke, it sold over 3 million copies, got great reviews and won plenty of awards. I really can’t see it as a bottom ten game. It probably beats Berseria.

Are a disproportionate amount of LiS fans compared to (non-mobile phone) gamers in general female? I’m gonna guess yes.

gamefaqs’ age also does it no favors. The average voter here was like 28 when it came out. Some people just can’t tolerate that kind of teen-speak, especially as they age.

I think both Halo and Life is Strange are much weaker here than they would be in general. Both looked terrible in 2015 games and 2018 characters. When I first saw this match I thought “I can’t believe I have to choose whether Life is Strange or a post-Halo 3 Halo game is actually going to win a match.”

GameFAQs' demographics definetly does not help Life is Strange. Same reason why I need to bring out sale numbers for Animal Crossing when people call it a minor Nintendo series.

I agree that this site isn't the place where LiS would fare best, but it's my experience that people that like it really like it, in other words a really vocal fanbase that generally has little tolerance for any negativity towards the game. It's definitely not as big as some people make it out to be.

Always thought the Japan vote on here was just a bunch of weebs living in Japan and not actual Japanese people.
