The Pokémon cycle is alive and well, and I'd argue it extends to every eligible (mainline) Pokémon game. Not a one of them is truly beloved among the fanbase; the difference with HG/SS, though, is that it's beloved outside the Pokémon fanbase.

Pokemon Sword board post National Dex cuts is not exactly representative of what hardcore fans think. Don't get me wrong. There are lots of people who are reasonable about the cuts (many of them on this board). But there are lots of people who are unreasonable and try to play up every fault they can because Game Freak fell out of their favour.

Also Gen 7 includes USUM which were not well received for not being as different from SM as people had hoped and the changes they did make made the story worse.

pokemon is a heavy nostalgic driven series on here Hence why a remake of a gameboy color game made it in over several new games.

Huh... I heard USUM fixed some of SM's flaws and overall made it more playable.

Don't get me wrong, I get your point with the series not being so relevant here outside of RBY and GSC, but by filtering casual fans out we can get a much better idea of how powerful (or not) modern Pokémon truly is.

Not only that, but also unlike pretty much any Pokémon game you can think of, HG/SS are universally loved by everyone who's played them – casual and hardcore fans alike.

I have Super Mario Galaxy 2 winning division 5. I think Witcher 3 hype has really died down. Anyone else on the SMG 2 hype train?

I go with games I like myself so Wither 3. Plus you seem to forget the Netflix series? A few days ago Witcher 3 had the most gamers playing it on Steam, even more when it first came out.

I actually have Dark Souls in the finals. I don't think Skyrim's a contender since Bethesda is hated now, but Witcher III/Dark Souls is probably the match I'll flip-flop on the most before bracket lockdown.

That whole situation is like Division 4 but on a bigger scale. Division 4 gets fed to Smash Bros while any of that lot could make the final.

I have Skyrim > Witcher as well as Witcher > Persona 5 and Skyrim > TLOU > Dark Souls but they all seem like hard match-ups to predict.

Dark Souls 3 had a poor result on FF15 that would barely edge out a modern Pokemon game a few days later. Being worse than Uncharted isn't a good sign either.

So is Dark Souls 1 just way more popular than the others?

One big difference this time is that the 2nd chance bracket will start in Round 4, instead of just in the finals division.

This is probably necessary because not having a double elimination means there are fewer matches in the finals, so having it start in R4 allows us to have 15 matches to pick instead of just 7. But it also means most brackets will still be alive by the time we get to pick our second chances. Do you change yours a lot, knowing most of your original picks could still be correct?

The Souls series has always been an odd ball. Dark Souls 1 was pretty overlooked when it first came out, then became wildly popular (and hence strong). Dark Souls 2 wasn't very well received, so it's definitely the weaker entry. Dark Souls 3 was very well received, but isn't so strong in GameFAQs, it seems.

Witcher 3 is on Switch and is thus available to Nintendo fans.

That's honestly part of my reasoning for taking it far.

Geralt did really good in the last character battle, so don't forget about that as well.

Hmm...Skyrim is also on Switch and was pretty well promoted for it too.

The Witcher 3 had practically just been released in 2015, and many more people have played it since, especially on GameFAQs. It also has sky-high respect to help it gain on 2015, whereas God of War, while undoubtedly well-liked, doesn't quite measure up in that regard. It's likely God of War is already past its peak, especially since GotY polls aren't the most reliable things ever when it comes to extrapolating to contests.

I mean, God of War has looked undeniably good in every poll it's been in. I wouldn't try to say people have already stopped liking it or caring about it. You'd have to argue that Witcher 3 has gotten better because of more time and exposure, such as the Netflix show.

Netflix boost is easily the best thing to happen to these contests!

And a sign that we're getting old...

That's not what I was trying to say there. I was saying that, much like your typical AAA game on GameFAQs, I don't think people care about God of War as much as they did when it was brand-new. On the other hand, all signs indicate people care about Witcher 3 even more now than when it was brand-new, which is exceptionally rare for a triple-A on GameFAQs.

56% subscribe to Netflix. That's not bad but what if we also stopped watching shows? Maybe the only shows we like are from the 90s.

I don't think that's generally how it works when the game is actually really well liked to begin with. Something like MGS4 dropped over time because people began to realize how flawed it was and gradually turned against it. And even then, it took a few years. Has that started to happen with GoW? Not to my knowledge. I haven't seen that. GoW started off pretty high, which means I'd wager it has more staying power than a year or two.

I'm not saying we're going to see a repeat of MGS4 going from just about beating Brawl in its GotY poll to barely breaking 40% on KH2. What I am saying is it's not exactly unprecedented for even really well-liked Western triple-A games to gradually fall off over the years, such as Half-Life 2, Oblivion, and Portal, to name a few. Of course, God of War has barely had a year to recede from people's memories since its GotY poll, so it won't fall by much, but even one or two percentage points on Base Link might make the difference.

I mean, it took those games a long time to drop off, partly because the series as a whole died or because they got supplanted by superior entries. I'm not worried about it with God of War quite yet.

Man, if only Spider-Man didn't have it easy before being fed to SSBU, then we could have seen if movie boost is a real thing.

And it'll be interesting to see what numbers Dragon Ball FighterZ puts on Dark Souls to see if people will blindly vote for Goku.

I feel like GameFAQs is pretty good at pretending that things never change ever and that's how I'm designing my entry. Like you would think GTA5 selling something like 50 million (more) copies since 2015 would help but lots of people here are going have it lose to P4G like a chump anyways. While it wouldn't be surprising if Witcher 3 really is a lot stronger now, I would be equally unsurprized if GameFAQs just ignored the rest of the world and decided Witcher 3 hasn't budged an inch.

I'll see how well my courage holds up over the next few days. I might bail if it turns out the rest of my bracket isn't as cookie as I think it is.
