I guess I'm one of those strange ones that puts Skyward Sword as one of my favorite Wii games. I honestly liked it more than both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess.

I just loved the setting for it and didn't mind the motion controls that much.

Skyward Sword had some of the best dungeons in Zelda history, and I maintain that some of the motion controls worked well enough to enhance the experience. Unfortunately, the game was bogged down with a lot of crap. Some of the highest highs and lowest lows of any Zelda game, imo.

There was a ton of amazing content in SS - e.g. Ancient Cistern, Lanayru, Sanship but man it needed an editor to cut out the crap. It so clearly felt of a project that was at once not finished (i.e. the sky and home town clearly being emptier than planned) and had too much random junk stuck in it (swimming around collecting notes sticks out as particularly egregious...). Could have also done with building up the climax better - felt like a lot of ideas thrown out with no clear player experience in mind. Also, more Zelda.

One issue with Skyward Sword is that it made such heavy (perhaps onerous) use of the Wii's motion controls that I'm not sure if it can be properly played with a traditional controller. I imagine this prohibited a Wii U port, but don't each of the Switch's joycons essentially function as a Wiimote*? A remaster might be possible now!

*I may be wrong. I've owned a Switch for a year and have used the joycons for maybe five minutes.
LeonhartFour 12/23/2019 4:07:53 AM#358
The Joycons do have motion control functionality, so it would theoretically be possible.

It’s a fair comment, and it’s why remakes/ports aren’t used on GameFAQs contests.

It makes sense not to include them, yeah. The remake of the better game is basically always still a better game, so we'd just have them several places in the bracket.

I think remakes are allowed in the contests. Like Resident Evil 2 should be eligible for GotD2.

I'd be fine with remakes getting in as long as they are a fairly different experience than the original.

Remasters shouldn't be allowed, but full-blown remakes should be fine.

But the games I'd have trouble considering are Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, and Wind Waker HD.

WW HD might be ok since it got a huge graphic overhaul, but I'd be sort of against allowing the N64 Zelda 3D games in. Those would open another set of problems...

Though I guess it could be interesting to see if OoT 3D would still win a contest.
I wouldn’t allow remakes either. I love Link’s Awakening, but do you really want to see it in the semifinals?

I'd say it loses to games like Dark Souls III or GTA V.

Which is kind of far, but not that far. Maybe even Xenoblade 2 beats it.

Super Mario RPG gained a lot of bandwagon momentum as the contest went along, but the original Link's Awakening was secretly really good in 2009 and utterly embarrassed FFVI and MMX a couple times.

I just don't see Zelda losing to GTA period though

Oh, I was talking about the remake (you know, because of it "reaching the semifinals" and stuff). I'm guessing he referred to GotD2's semis.

Hard disagree. It's an early-year release (so more time for people who didn't love it to forget about it) that's not quite in GameFAQs' wheelhouse and that some people simply won't vote for no matter how much they loved it, because it's a remake. I still think Three Houses is the easy favorite in neutral circumstances, while RE2 will likely score second.

Looks like being an early year release simply didn't matter for RE2 in this poll. It's easily beating down the second place game here. I guess this was such a weak year for games overall (especially on the PS4) that it didn't matter that RE2 was an early year release.

Have we ever had a game release early in the year that did poorly in the GotY polls but would have done well if it was released later in the year? I've never really been sold on the idea that being released early in the year was a disadvantage.

Also no KH3 huh

That's really weird because it isn't like KH3 was a disappointment when it comes to the Metacritic score. Here were the Metacritic scores for all of the games in today's poll:

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night - 83
Control - 82
Crash Team Racing: Nitro-Fueled - 83
Death Stranding - 82
Devil May Cry 5 - 88
Outer Wilds - 82
Resident Evil 2 - 91
Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice - 90

For reference, Kingdom Hearts III had an 83 Metacritic score, which was higher than 3 of the games in this poll (and tied with 2 others). So it's really difficult to pin down an exact reason for its exclusion from the poll. I also looked at GameFAQs user ratings (another metric used by Allen for these polls) and Kingdom Hearts III had a 4.00 / 5 user score, which was higher than 4 of the games in this poll.

Death Stranding not even taking second place is a bigger shock, though.

I disagree. I'd say the weakest years this decade in terms of strength were 2012, 2014, 2016, and maybe 2018. This was a fairly solid year from what I've seen.

This is possible, I suppose. Even then, it would do worse in the Xbox One poll than the PS4 poll (though it'd probably lose to RE2). We've seen in the past that most voters only vote for a game on the system poll that matches the system they played it on. This means that those who played KH3 on PS4 poll would only vote for it in the PS4 because that was the system they played it on, while very few would actually cross over and give it a vote in the Xbox One poll as well.

KH3's chances of winning the Xbox One depends on whether RE2 or Sekiro make it into the Xbox One. Out of the games which could appear in the Xbox One poll, the main competition would be Gears 5 and Borderlands 3. Gears 5 probably does poorly, though.
