Crono had spectacularly bad bracket placement in 2010 and 2013. But this year's format was really conducive to winning multiple matches - he'd only have gotten 1 if the first loss to Cloud eliminated him.

Honestly, and I mean objectively, not just as a CT fanboy, Crono hasn't looked like the weakest Noble Niner since 2007. He got to the final in 2008 (riding Nintendo LFF but he still won, and had to beat L, Pikachu, and Vincent to get to the LFF part of the bracket). Then he lost to a strong joke in 2010 and LFF in 2013. Sonic has put up bad performances non-stop since 2008.

And yes it's true that Crono still lost his matches in 10/13......but if that's the standard, then he beat Mario and Samus in 2008 and should get some credit. He lost like, what, 0 updates to Mario? It was a 57/43 beatdown, and Samus got 60/40'd. (Thanks Link!)

2010 was probably hands-down the best contest for Sonic since 2006. And that was mostly because he didn't let Ganondorf and Kirby anywhere near him when some of us on the board thought they could upset him (I think Kirby > Sonic was actually my gut pick). In hindsight, Ganon and Kirby have simply proven themselves to be strong, but not really capable of taking on the big leagues yet. Sonic's other performances that year were not very inspiring (failing to double a character whose game wasn't out in the US, barely doubling another character from his own series, failing to break 30% in his loss, even if it was to Link).

Especially after this contest where Sonic lost handily to Solid Snake and Zelda and couldn't even break 55% on Auron (but uh at least he reversed that 4-way loss I guess?), it's clear the Blue Blur is the weak link of the Noble Nine.

EDIT: On further examination, direct extrapolation from 2010 has Sonic not even getting 62% against Rikku, a character who typically struggles to even make contests. And those Ganon/Kirby results would not have looked very inspiring had Sonic not made a fool of himself in four-ways.

Not being able to make contests doesn't say all that much about strength to be fair. In particular if you share a game with many other popular characters.

I was more referring to Rikku having low seeds in every 1v1 contest she has been in aside from the female bracket (and even there her seed wasn't that good).

Sonic failed to reach 55% on Sub-Zero, of all characters, in 2007 pre-Brawl announcement, then after the Brawl announcement, he barely beat Squall with Sora in the poll. Red Sox is right, and even in 2007, Sonic was still weaker despite Crono breaking the Noble Nine.

So was the match a fluke?

Sonic seemed to be at his strongest in 2005-2006; the Nintendo boost seemed to help him too. I'm guessing part of that was the Sonic Adventure 2 kiddies becoming old enough to be interested in a place like gamefaqs.

Also, while you could probably credit part of this to bandwagoning, 2005 is also the best Knuckles has ever looked.

RDR2 is up again. Time to see if it can redeem itself.

Based on the early results so far, looks like I was right about RDR2 basically winning this poll by default. Monster Hunter: World already showed that it was too weak to take on RDR2 in the PS4 poll and it should be even weaker in the Xbox One poll. This batch of games is much weaker than the PS4 poll, yet Monster Hunter: World is struggling to get above 10% here.

It was actually quite vindicating that Crono took down Mega Man this year, as not only did Crono prove he's not the basement of the Noble 9, but despite winning fairly tight, it was still more than what the rat could do against Mega Man, and thus some indirect revenge for Pikachu using the Magus leech to defraud Crono of a run in 2013.

I'm surprised Dragonball Fighter Z isn't a bigger deal here. My friends who are bigger fighting game fans hyped me up on it, telling me DBZ is now the fighting game that connects different fighting game communities together.

I don't expect 3-on-3 fighting games to succeed on GameFAQs in most circumstances, and just because they have a popular license doesn't mean they're more likely to be Smash-tier than something like Dissidia or Playstation All Stars...but dang, it's not looked good in either poll so far.

Non-smash fighting games generally don't do well here. But I'd say if DBFZ was in a 1-on-1 contest it might do reasonably just due to name recognition alone.

There's "not doing well," which is understandable, and then there's letting Forza Horizon 4 double you.

I asked Allen about these polls a while back and he revealed how he chooses the games.

Allen said that he uses GameFAQs popularity, GameFAQs user scores, and critic scores as the criteria for selecting which games make it into these GotY polls. Those are the same criteria he used for selecting the games for the 2015 BGE contest, although nominations were an additional factor for that contest as well.

It's weird how sales doesn't factor in at all basically.

Why should it? A game's quality isn't based on sales, unless it's an online-only game where a large playerbase is needed.

Not that it would win, but where's Into the Breach? It was the top reviewed PC game of the year, and it wouldn't win but would probably come second or third. It wasn't on the Switch poll either. It'll probably be in the indie poll (which Celeste is likely going to dominate) at least.

And speaking of winning by default, MHW in this poll, oh boy. What a weak year for AAA PC games (because it was a weak year for multiplatform AAA games). Exclusives matter after all!

@swirIdude But sales are the most important part. Because if a game sells well they can expand on it via DLC and make sequels too. So yeah.

Sales are important for the company itself sure

But reviews and overall word of mouth are what persuade actual gamers to buy the game

And even "not actual gamers" don't buy a game on sales, they buy on marketing.

Also it takes at least a week or 2 for people to find general sales numbers for a game

Many comlanies have to pray vast majority of sales come from day / weekend 1

Damn, Detective Pikachu is losing to 3 different games in today's poll, and this is even after the hype trailer for the upcoming movie that was put out less than 1 1/2 months ago. Getting doubled by Luigi's Mansion is very embarrassing after you had that trailer for the movie.

This just tells me Luigi's Mansion has some semblance of strength and no game could SFF it more than SSBM.

I was surprised at yesterday's PC poll getting even lower vote totals than the Xbox One poll. In previous years where we had both a PC and Xbox One GotY poll, the PC poll always got the better vote totals. This year was the first time the Xbox One poll got better vote totals than the PC poll.

Bowser's Inside Story remake could very well be the latest release I'll buy for it and I'm sure it's the same for many.

Maybe Octopath if you were to hold the poll now or in a few months.

I suspect that Xenoblade 2 will age better though. Octopath gives me Bravely Default vives: hyped at first and then no one cared later.

Holy s***, we just reached 4000 votes on today's poll with only 5 minutes remaining until the poll ends. Last year's Mobile GotY poll got 5261 votes, but we're seeing even worse vote totals with this year's Mobile poll.

I know the Mobile GotY poll is well-known for drawing in poor vote totals ever since it was a category in the GotY polls. This year's group of Mobile games is unusually weak. At least the 2017 Mobile GotY poll had a Fire Emblem game to make the vote totals not suck as badly as usual, but this year's Mobile poll has no real standout games.

Seeing Celeste win a poll on GameFAQs makes me so happy.

It's a Super Meat Boy-styled platformer that greatly expands on that formula, has a ton of accessibility and difficulty options, and a really great story. Definitely one of the best 2D platformers ever.

Also, I did some research on the leaderboard for 100 most active users in PotD voting and found out that 90 of them voted in the Mobile GotY poll. It's possible that the actual number is slightly higher as I couldn't view the site usage history (like message board posts and PotD voting) for some of the users on the PotD badge leaderboard.

This research was done by tracking the leaderboard of the PotD badge prior to updating last night, and then checking the leaderboard again after it updated.

Oh wow, a VR GotY poll today. I was expecting the GotY polls to largely follow the same schedule we had last year, which meant a Remake GotY poll if last year's schedule held up. I guess I can't rule out a Remake GotY poll just yet.

I wonder if it will get more votes or less votes than Mobile.
