Sans and Draven so high
f*** the registered voters, what did they try to accomplish with this?

To be fair, winning a GameFAQs contest is worth a lot more on this site than their games ever would.

Yeah, this is literally the people who remembered Draven and Undertale's runs in previous contests and voted for them based on them. The casual traffic skewed closer to the normal percentage these characters would have scored without those events happening.

But why would remembering them make one vote for them?

Haste_2 12/26/2018 2:42:59 PM#302
Only a tiny percentage of the registered voters voted for Draven because of Draven's past success. Registered voters voted 87.77% for Ammy and 88.86% of anonymous voters voted for Ammy.

Some voters like chaos, rallies, upsets, and/or just making people mad, that's why!

Draven and Undertale's contest wins also likely inspired a few contest followers to check their games out that probably wouldn't have done so otherwise.

I'm sure some of it is bracket votes too. I mean look at the number of people that got those matches wrong. Draven was predicted to win by like 28% of people and Sans 47%

Even if these characters had a 100% rate of disapproval on Board 8 (and they don't, sans is actually really awesome), it's important to note that there are more registered users that remember Draven and Undertale but don't necessarily come here.

Allen made a serious screw up in this poll:

Allen forgot to change the fourth option to say "2019" instead of "2018", and yet the option is somehow pulling in over 3% despite this error.

The next GotD contest will feature the lowest average game strength we've ever seen in a contest. With the right round 1 match, any game with serious rally potential can build up rally momentum against nearly every single game in the bracket unless they're going up against one of the juggernauts like Skyrim, Smash Ultimate, or BotW in round 1. There are probably less than 15 games that could technically stop a game from building up rally momentum in round 1, especially when we will probably see even lower vote totals for this contest due to the site not playing as many of the games in the bracket.

3DS ownership drops to 70.11%. Less than 6 months after the 3DS set an all-time high ownership of 73.80%, 3DS ownership drops nearly 4%. It was expected that 3DS ownership would eventually drop off now that the Switch is coming up on 2 years old soon.

PS4 ownership drops to 68.88%. This result is pretty strange and could just be a case of random variation.

Switch ownership increases to 57.52%. If we ignore the 4.25% of the site that got their Switch on Christmas, that means the Switch only had an ownership of 53.27% immediately following the release of Smash Ultimate. That's considerably lower than the estimated 59% ownership of the Wii at the time Brawl was released.

Xbox One ownership increases to 27.29%. This is a very small increase over the previous poll. After Microsoft had a very strong E3 press conference this year, I originally said that their strong showing could actually have an effect on Xbox One ownership on this site. I did say that this effect probably wouldn't show up right away and any boost in ownership might not occur until sometime in 2019 or later. Despite Microsoft's strong showing at E3, the Xbox One has gained less than 0.30% in ownership.

I realized just today that Crono won more matches this contest than he did in the previous two character battles combined, despite not being part of the main bracket.

Either he got spectacularly unlucky in 2010 and 2013, or he was genuinely weaker back then. Probably a bit of both, but I think it's mostly the former.

Crono had spectacularly bad bracket placement in 2010 and 2013. But this year's format was really conducive to winning multiple matches - he'd only have gotten 1 if the first loss to Cloud eliminated him.

RDR2 is getting destroyed by 3 different games in today's poll. There's still the Xbox One poll to give RDR2 another chance to reach the overall GotY poll, but this is a pretty bad result for RDR2 since it's so recent that it should have relevancy on its side here.

Dragon Quest XI threatening God of War here is a bit surprising since the Dragon Quest series has never really done well on this site despite being a JRPG series (this site's strong suit). Of course, God of War is at a disadvantage by coming out in the early part of 2018, so it's not as relevant right now compared to Dragon Quest XI which came out a few months later.

Monster Hunter: World doing this poorly is a bit surprising since it seems to be a pretty well-liked game by the actual gamers. I guess I blame this performance on the game coming out in January, so it's facing a serious uphill battle in staying relevant and fresh to the voters.

I don't think being released at the start of the year is a disadvantage. Games from earlier in the year usually don't win because it isn't common for strong games to be released during that time of the year. But when a strong game is released early in the year, it is still strong at the end. We saw this with BotW.

With another year completed, here's our overall history of average vote totals:

Year | Average | Percent Increase/Decrease
1999 | 4408 |
2000 | 7062 | 60.21%
2001 | 14019 | 98.51%
2002 | 34435 | 145.63%
2003 | 55397 | 60.87%
2004 | 54598 | -1.44%
2005 | 56643 | 3.75%
2006 | 74644 | 31.78%
2007 | 87908 | 17.77%
2008 | 91112 | 3.64%
2009 | 85797 | -5.83%
2010 | 72588 | -15.40%
2011 | 56882 | -21.64%
2012 | 42981 | -24.44%
2013 | 36506 | -15.06%
2014 | 27323 | -25.15%
2015 | 21162 | -22.55%
2016 | 17492 | -17.34%
2017 | 14282 | -18.35%
2018 | 11360 | -20.46%

For the regular polls in 2018 that happened during the contest, I determined that the contest matches were reducing the vote totals of the regular polls by about 9%. The polls that happened during the contest had their vote totals adjusted upwards by 9% to correct for this slight reduction, but even the corrected vote totals produced a yearly average about 120 votes higher compared to using the actual vote totals of the polls.

This is now our 9th straight year of a vote total decrease of 15% or more compared to the previous year, and 10 straight years of vote total declines. Since we were averaging about 10000 votes by the end of this year, it seems like a sure thing that 2019 will mark our 11th straight year of a vote total decline. Even maintaining a 10000 vote average throughout 2019 would still be a decline of about 12% from 2018.

I felt like RDR2 was simply too big of a game to be an epic flop on this site. And indeed, that is the case here. 14% is still better than most games will ever get in a single GotY poll.

When the Xbox One poll arrives, I think RDR2 basically wins that poll by default. Dragon Quest, God of War, and Marvel's Spider Man won't be eligible for the Xbox One poll. Monster Hunter is already too weak to take on RDR2 as we're seeing today, and I expect Monster Hunter to be even weaker in the Xbox One poll.
