Cloud has improved on Link. Thus if we assume this pattern continues, then every future poll will have Cloud always improving up until he eventually beats Link. If we continue and have Cloud keep rising, eventually we'll reach a point where the number of polls Link wins is equal to the number of polls Cloud wins. Do one more poll, and suddenly Cloud has won more polls than Link, making Cloud the legit #1 character on GameFAQs.

Thus, this poll proves Cloud > Link.

Cloud > Samus is all that matters.

Cloud > Zelda > Mario > Samus is already confirmed though.

The only thing left to do is confirm that Cloud > Jay Solano.

I asked two topics back in the opening post if anyone could break 40% on Link. People said no. And while it didn't happen at first, well, Cloud did it! It would've been so disappointing years ago, but today, it's an accomplishment. Congrats, Cloud!

Honestly, if we just skip next year and go right into GotD2 at the beginning of 2020, I'd be totally okay with that.

Then I can become the first multi-time Guru champion. Spoilers, Breath of the Wild is going to win, and Smash Ultimate will be the close #2

So how many topics did we go through this contest?

Instead of having GOTD 2, can we just have another full games contest? There are so many interesting matchups there.

Batman and Darth Vader are going to have the same issue Crono and Megaman have, that of being much weaker in the rest of the world than in the Americas.

I would put Han Solo before Yoda personally

From what I can tell, it doesn't seem like we'll have any bonus matches. Only 3 poll IDs have been inserted into the database (7445, 7446, 7447), which would likely be the regular polls for Saturday/Sunday/Monday.

If there were going to be bonus matches, more than 3 poll IDs would have to be added to the database.

That message doesn't mean much. We had that message there on the final day of matches before the Thanksgiving break, even though we didn't get any bonus matches during the break.

Just sitting here thinking about how we're proud of cloud for merely breaking 40% on Link. What a guy, that Link is.

No bonus match today.

Since I don't really have anywhere else to dump this, I've followed traceexcalibur on tumblr since the 2015 contest, and seeing them working on the Hiveswap Friendsims these days makes me wonder if they were really just a passing fan who wanted Undertale to win or if they were pushing the game on toby's behalf (since toby and Andrew Hussie (homestuck and hiveswap creator) are pals).

Good point actually. Wouldn’t be as extreme though. And they’d be absolute powerhouses in the US.

Yeah, no.

The main reason Rogue One was a hit is Vader’s presence and the thing people remember most about it is 90 seconds of Vader kicking ass. Maybe less than 90 seconds.

I love Sephiroth, but he’s all style.

Vader has one of the most epic character arcs in cinema history.

If anything would hurt him it would be “Ani”. Not being “edgy”. His character is dark and depressing, not edgy, and his story is now pretty much *the* archetype of a fallen hero.

It’s never not going to be cool to like Vader, that’s just not going to happen.

I wouldn’t trust any of these characters to be strong, other than maybe Homer.

I can already envision the pic sabotage Vader will get. Technically he is Darth Vader before he gets put into the suit, after all.

Vader is about as much style as Sephiroth is in terms of appeal. Vader has a story under there. So does Seph. No one cares about either one much compared to their style

Vader’s story is much more important to his popularity than Sephiroth’s.

That’s true of video game characters as a whole. Appealing design and being part of a game with great gameplay can take you very far. Link for example.

Characters in other mediums will always rely more on other things. Simply because other things are more important to those mediums, since they aren’t interactive.

Vader has been around since 1977 though. He's had 20 years longer than Sephiroth for his style appeal to burn away.

Link vs. Santa II

The difference between Vader and Sephiroth is that while Vader is really old now and has been parodied relentlessly, he's never been treated as cool to hate. Prequel Anakin and some of his actors, sure, but Vader himself? No way; it's partly because Vader is so near-universally liked that some of the prequel stuff annoyed people.

Whereas the campaign against Sephiroth has been pretty vicious in comparison and it's ridiculously easy to find people who don't think the character is any good at all.

The reasons for the differing reaction can be debated but I don't think it can be seriously debated that the long-term reaction to the two has been different.

And I mean this isn't necessarily representative of general gamefaqs opinion but I think it tells the story well enough:

i agree with red sox that another games contest would be cool.

back in the day i would slightly prefer a character battle because it would be accompanied by the fanfiction project, which obviously isn't a thing when there's a games contest. but nowadays the fanfiction project is long gone, as well as everyone who participated in it (except sir chris), so that isn't a factor anymore.

If there's a universe where "Alien" would be a stronger character than Ellen Ripley, I'm not sure I want to be part of it.

So besides Smash and BotW, what other powerhouses are we looking at for GotD2?

Mario Odyssey I guess. Witcher 3 and Skyrim too.

Odyssey and P5 both got doubled in 2017 by Breath of the Wild, which is probably better than a lot of the field will do.

Smash 4 will also probably be decently strong because it is a Smash game

Fallout 4 also might be decent given it hung decently close to Witcher 3 in GotY, although F76 probably didn't help its chances.

On Vader I think saying "he's fleshed out" is a cute thing to say to be "justified" in liking him but at the end of the day 95% of people like Vader because he's badass as hell and he's popular in spite of his character depth not because of it.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree though

After Ultimate, I would think Smash 4 completely collapses into mega-turbo fodder. Ultimate just makes 4 irrelevant unless you really love Master Core.

Vader's story probably did more bad to him than good!

Cloud improved his performance against Link by slightly over 1% and this improvement came from both registered and anonymous users. With registered users, Link went from 61.27% in the first match to 60.10% in the second match. For anonymous users, Link went from 59.11% to 57.78%. Cloud did get a slightly better improvement with anonymous users.
