How in the world is Cloud this strong?

What happened to the nostalgia + relevance theory? I really thought Odyssey would make this no contest.

Now that you mention it, I realized that the only place the Mario/Crono 2003 updates may exist on the internet is on an old Tripod site that hasn't been updated since 2004. People forget just how far Cloud had to fall from to even make Cloud/Mario a contested match.

Cloud was a beast here for a lot of years.

Dude I was there. Sunshine has just come out and Mario was finding votes from everywhere.

I like that Samus, Mario, and Cloud are all equal to each other now. And Zelda's somehow joined that top elite tier, too. And even the lower half of the Noble Nine has been shaken up thanks to Pikachu and Tifa.

Next character contest has the potential to be really freaking good.

Even when he beat Cloud, Mario had to have a brand new release, a big offsite rally, and questionable at best amounts of legitimate votes to get the job done.

If Cloud had gotten his rematch the next year, well... look at what Sephiroth did.

Oh, creative must have input those in manually at some point. If you look at a bunch of the matches, you can see large gaps between updates (like 7 hours in Magus/Ganondorf), which is when no one was recording updates on the update topic on Board 8. I do rather miss the update topics - and I think their decline is a big reason we started getting so many more posts in the stats topic in 2004/5. Before that, ongoing match discussion was spread across the board but centered on the update topics, while the stats topic was reserved for "serious" stats stuff.

I think if you ran Sephiroth/Mario again today Seph makes it a lot closer for what it's worth. As a casual you see Seph Tifa and Cloud in the final set and you're like FF7 FAQs again zzz

Then results pan out and it's clear it was ZeldaFAQs all along, and that Mario is a slimeball. I do think that perception matters a non trivial amount. Like Mario probably probably beats Cloud 53-47 if he faced him a few rounds ago.

We saw Tifa/Samus again without Sephiroth in the same day and Tifa only did .3% better (and that was with a pic where her boobs were bigger than her head). I don't think it matters much. Tifa had Sephiroth in the same day as well when she beat Luigi with ease.

Cloud, you're taking too long to build this lead man.

this match has been mostly following Megaman vs Crono trends

right now Cloud's lead on Mario is almost the same as Crono's lead was, Crono had also just taken the lead an hour or two ago

I think it took a while to set in. Tifa/Samus 2 was before Cloud got utterly clowned by Link. Cloud did better against Crono after that by about 1%. Throw that in as well as the Mario being a slimeball vote as well as the all Zelda winners final and I don't think it's outlandish to suggest

The board vote on this one was remarkable. Mario jumped almost 4% on the 2nd update. Whereas he dropped a bit under 1% against Sephiroth. Zelda's early vote against Link was also remarkable - the speed at which she fell was actually outpacing L-Block for a few hours.

A part of me wants to see this match be in question until the final update, just to see what Allen has to do for pics, because of the winner of this match being immediately thrown into the next match.

This is gonna be down to the wire.

Samus would just be administering a 53%+ beatdown here, so I guess if this gives us a Cloud victory, we ended up on the right path after all.

Yeah Cloud lost to Mario in the 1st contest BUT Mario had a new game the day that match came out and there was a rally for him too(yeah rallies were always in the contests).
The next year Sephiroth which was Number 3 back then defeated Mario with 61%! Think about that! Cloud would have doubled him no doubt.

2003 was all about Kingdom Hearts, not FF7. There's a reason Sephiroth jumped from being barely better than Mega Man to getting 61% on Mario, and--let's not forget--that that was the year that Cloud actually beat Link.

FFVII gave them the starting potential, but 2003 was the year of Kingdom Hearts.

It's crazy to me that it has been 16 years since the 2k2 contest. I was 15 in 2002, so it has been almost the same amount of distance from that point to the date of my birth.

Eh. I think Sephiroth got so close to Cloud in that final because of Link fan backlash. They wanted revenge. Remember, Cloud put up 56% on Sephiroth just one year later.

Now that cross-over games are becoming more and more common, will KH style cross-overs stop providing meaningful boosts?

It seems only a matter of time until half of the characters in the bracket are in Smash.
