Well she isn't stronger than Mario either.
She is getting the same help as Zelda (bandwagon and rallies).

These are the same trends that Samus had in the first match. She took loads of percentage away from Mario during the last few hours of the first poll. When you have these trends and start from 50% instead of 48%, you get pretty big gains.

Wow, Samus in upset territory. Never thought I'd see the day she'd break 45% on Mario.

I have no idea which of these two is a more favorable opponent for Cloud. It's looking likely that Samus is indirectly stronger, but I can't help thinking Mario is more likely to gather the troops in a close Ninty/Square slugfest.

Though I guess "rally the troops" may mean"porn rallies" these days, so Samus could be stronger in both respects!

Samus being indirectly stronger means a ton more than rallying troops in an indirect match. Mario/Cloud is a lot more likely to actually be close whereas Samus probably just smashes him 55-45.

Yeah I agree. Samus is stronger. I mean Cloud score back almost 53% on her an on Link almost 47% when both were weaker than they are now. So yeah. I think around 56% on Cloud sounds right.

Yeah, after what happened to Snake, Samus may very well be the Nintendo enforcer who goes out there and crushes everything when Link feels like napping.

I really want to say that Samus is worth more than the 53% Tifa/Sephiroth says she is worth on him indirectly. But I guess that would require Sephiroth to rSFF Tifa? Or maybe the Samus/Snake Smash SFF is real.

Well at best she's worth 56-57% indirectly against Mario, based on what she did against Snake and if you assume no bandwagon effect from Zelda against Mario. Though if you are arguing rSFF in Mario/Samus then it isn't a stretch to argue for one in Zelda/Mario

Or just have seen Zelda wreck Squall and beat Snake. Both of those results are in line with her narrowly beating Mario.

Given what Snake did to Auron and Sonic in the loser's bracket you'd have to argue that any bandwagon effect happened between the Sonic and Mario matches. It's still possible that it happened. I think it was more rSFF, but the same result would have happened...

Yeah if you assume they're oddly consistant somehow.

Bandwagons have always produced a telltale dominance of the early vote. As the bandwagon goes on it the trends becomes more and more exaggerated. We've seen nothing like this out of Zelda.

I'd kind of like to see Cloud/Mario just because it's more likely to be close and we haven't seen it in literally any form (outside of the Battle Royal in 2006, which barely counts) since 2002. We've seen Cloud/Samus many times.

Yeah I'd guess the bandwagon effect for Zelda is fairly minor if it exists at all. The point about the early vote dominance is a good one. Snake ~= Mario and Zelda not taking Mario's hierarchy BS, along with a possible slight temporary power-up due to the release of Smash and Sheik being more of a Smash favorite than Mario makes the most sense to me. Mario is probably a bit stronger because I don't want to consider the idea of Auron > Sephiroth, but that match is probably closer than you'd expect.

L-Block recorded stronger results every round. And became more frontloaded every round. Zelda recorded the same level results each round. And no frontloading of trends. They look nothing alike.

The concept of "bandwagons" is a fraud.

No seriously, whenever a character overperforms in one match and continues to do so in future matches, maybe we just underestimated them in the first place? Do we really need a special factor to explain anything about that?

To me the best explanation is that Zelda = Snake = Mario and Samus is a tier above them, with a bit of Smash factor and a lot of HIERARCHY explaining the discrepancy between her Snake and Mario results.

Zelda Round 7 was stronger than Zelda Round 6, etc.

Bandwagons are rare and easy to spot when they happen. Starcraft 2004. L-Block 2007. Undertale 2015 (it was a rally and a bandwagon). Snake in 2008. They have very distinctive features.
