pikachu's recovery is stupid in the original smash, quick attack is right behind Kirby in terms of never-dying, though he also had some very strong power moves too.

samus though has always been fun to play in smash. charge shot sounds good and when you hit it you feel so happy. bomb spamming also throws people off in casual play and the missiles that are semi-controllable are cool. you know it's just a really good arsenal when you suck your teeth for shooting a flamethrower.

That was years before I knew they are considered the best, guess we figured it out on our own (well, it might sound obvious to some, but not every top tier characyer is a top tier for a casual. Like, how do I even play SSBB Meta Knight?)

Samus is a good main for a casual. She is just very satisfying to play with charge shot, projectile spam, and large grab length. Plus she doesn't take much tech skill to win with a lot at mid levels of play.

I played both SSB and SSB4 very casually and main'd Samus in both. Melee I played much more competitively and didn't really touch Samus there. Brawl I didn't play enough to really develop a main.

Oh man, good times.

For the record, regarding Snake/Sonic tomorrow, Zelda projects a 56.17% win for Snake and Auron projects a 57.57% win for Snake.

The projection based on Zelda/Sonic could be on the low side if it turns out that the sprite pictures actually hurt Zelda slightly. We'll be able to use Snake/Zelda and Sonic/Snake to determine how much sprites actually hurt Zelda against Sonic.

Master Chief wouldn't lose to King K. Rool dammit that Tails/Luigi result is SFF

I mean it's not worse than Snake's sprite

although Sonic's was way better than Auron's

next two days should be pretty boring. Snake, Samus, Link, and Mario should all wreck with 55%+.

Well, this was the drawback of the way the bracket was set up to allow rematches like this. We're getting one result flipped, but the rest will be pretty much the same, in all likelihood.

I am really curious to see what the gap is between Link and Cloud these days though, so even if that one isn't close, I'm still intrigued by the outcome.

honestly at this point i'm not sure there's any reason Chief would lose against Shepard.
although i'm amused at the possibility of him jobbing to Geno.

I remember Pikachu having some great throws in SSB original as well. Agreed that he always seemed really good.

His back throw can kill in the middle of Dreamland at something stupidly low like 70-80% . They didn't even pretend to balance Pikachu in 64.

Link/Cloud has historically been so stable that I'm starting to get up my hopes for Cloud to pull off 46% again, just because he can. And only he can.

I imagine there will probably be a Winners and Losers version of the x-stats this year, in addition to our usual adjusted stats.

For amateurs like me, the grab length was one of the worst parts of Samus.

Back when I was like 11 or 12 years old playing videogames at my babysitter's house, I played Smash for the first time, and recognized Pikachu most so he was my first player. After running through single player with Pikachu for a few days, I picked up Samus having never played Metroid before because I though "he" looked super cool.

I hadn't played Ocarina or seen any Zelda 3D to that point (only played multiplayer games because I didn't own an N64) so I didn't recognize Link as the character I had played as for years on the NES, especially because I always chose a custom name as a little kid.

My scope was even smaller. I only knew Mario DK and Pikachu and no one else

Is Mega Man favored to win still?

If so, the end of the match should be interesting, since if Pikachu does come back to win again we can get a better read on his clutch.

Megaman wins by about 180 votes predicting by where he was at this hour and how much pikachu won by in the end in their previous match

i'd say that's low enough that its really just a tossup, same as the first match.

I just need to point out that not all of us Mega Man fans are like this guy. Then again every board 8er knows that Black Turtle is one of a kind.

But I will never understand the Pikachu love. Super annoying in the anime and useless in the games.

Pikachu evolves to Raichu, which is decent in multiplayer.

I don't think Pikachu or Raichu are viable competitively. There are just so many better electric types, Tapu, Zapdos to name a few.

Not on singles, but definitely in doubles.

Alolan Raichu gets Surge Surfer, which makes it a great offensive lead with Tapu Koko. Not to mention it has an exclusive Z-Move to go with that.

Regular Raichu gets Lightningrod, and it's one of the only two pokemon (the other being Togedemaru) that gets both that and Fake Out (as well as Encore), which makes it a good pure support option. It was made a little obsolete by Togedemaru, but you could still prefer Raichu due to the higher speed and not being 2x weak to Ground.

Ah ok doubles, I was only thinking of singles. I'm not too updated about the meta. Does Landorus T wreck havoc in doubles too?

Last time I played (over a year ago) Lando T was omnipresent.

Intimidate is even better on doubles than on singles.

And groundium Z actually made it better.

That said the stuff I'm saying is from VGC17 where Alolan Raichu and Togedemaru were super common. I don't know what this year's meta did to their viability, but I assume they are still used sometimes.

Oh yeah I remember now, damn there were just so many broken Z moves it was...just wasn't an addition I enjoyed.

Pikachu probably does well through a combination of being the franchise's mascot and Smash.

Came back from work, checked the results. This is what I have to say.

1st match=I was sure that MM would win. Of course I want Pikachu to win but of course Americans vote for the wrong character most of the times anyways.
2nd match=Expected.
