I mean, it's really early and votals are super low. But it does tell us something about where these guys' strength comes from. For example, Mario (as of right now) clearly doesn't get much Smash strength, so his ability to SFF Smash-heavy Nintendo characters (like, say, Ness) would likely be weaker than his ability to SFF other Nintendo characters. Similarly, Samus being higher than him on the Smash hierarchy can help explain why she held up better against his rSFF than before. People who like her for Smash more than Metroid are probably less likely to leave her for Mario.

I'm trying to remember what made Samus particularly memorable. Link is Link, and Kirby was the "top tier" character for casual play, but Samus wasn't particularly good for casual or high-level play. I'm guessing she's doing well at least partially because Smash served as her introduction to many gamers.

I think we've forgotten that she may still be the biggest "Smash boost" character there is.

Aaaaand there it is. There are probably thousands of stories like this! I wonder if I was uncommon for actually knowing who she was.

Samus had the charge shot, and that was super cool. My casual fighting game friends would pick Samus just for that thing.

Also the fact that Kirby is 3rd is pretty telling but not surprising

Captain Falcon is also doing well for himself, which is not surprising.

Well I mean it was 13 years ago. Let's be honest-- I really don't know if 60% was chosen due to being super duper confident Mario would win beforehand. It's not like I do all my Oracles way ahead of time. I believe I probably took a posture of having more conviction in that 60% because I never liked the narrative that Mario needed to boost to win that match and win it easily. If he puts up less against Zero, yeah maybe I drop it to 57%? I really don't know.

I do recall thinking the match would not be close before the contest even began. Largely because of a SFF split among the Nintendo core bending his way despite Samus having better outside Nintendo support making her more strong indirectly.

I do also think that trying to say Mario needed to boost to win a match he won 60-40 reeks of damage control-- and I'm sorry to psychoanalyze, but it just does. And I do think it's more unreasonable to think that 04 Mario would lose than that he could potentially swing a 60-40 in 04, because SFF matches in general are strange and 04 had our most severe SFF beatings in contest history. Very possible that Mario was weaker in 04, but had more strength with SFF because of the way the voterbase was that year and it would offset. You think it's wrong, but you can't know that.

I mean for more theories, it's also possible that how much weaker Mario was in 04 vs 05 was exaggerated due to Crono artificially boosting for that match alone because he was 0-2 in heart breaking matches, meaning Mario's more accurate x-stat value is being set equal to Crono. It's also possible that Crono is underrated slightly in 04 due to very slight Link/Crono SFF. It's also possible that Samus is overrated slightly in 04 due to facing no direct Nintendo competition and being measured through the least tainted source of Cloud Strife.

Am I seriously arguing any of those? I don't know. I'm just saying there are a ton of angles to consider and you have to be damn sure none of it applies before seriously humoring a 60-40 can flip on its head. I'd say it's obvious that Mario 2k5 is stronger than 2k4. That much is clear. As far as how much stronger, how much stronger or not Samus is in 2k5 vs 2k4, or was in 2k4 relative to Mario, it's a lot of speculation limited by our small data pool to work with and a lot of things that just don't stat very well.

I wonder how much Smash boost Kirby got. He was by far the biggest casual character, but I get the sense that a lot of those people also picked him because they'd played Kirby before in some form too.

Pikachu doing well in this poll is surprising too given that most people probably got their first exposure to Pikachu through Pokemon, but maybe the Pokemon craze at the time could have influenced some people into playing with Pikachu when they got the original Smash Bros.

Pikachu was widely considered the best fighter in the first game, so his popularity there makes sense.

I wonder if Pikachu being in both polls right now is inflating Pikachu's Smash vote a little.

Of course it does Probably because it’s smash bros characters.

If you did a favourite Smash bros Melee character guys like Marth and shiek would decimate Mario in a poll.

But it’s not supposed to tell what character is the strongest. But strongest smash character

This poll explains why Samus was able to get so close to Mario yesterday. Because the smash fanbase who are in their numbers prefer Samus over mario. Whereas the neutral Nintendo fans favour Mario and casuals probably do too

Really? In my experience, it was really only the hardcore Pokemon fans who played Pikachu in Smash.

This poll isn’t exclusive to smash 1. I mean it says which character from original smash is your favourite. Not which smash 64 character is your favourite.

You have hundreds of smash fans right now on. This site probably voting for a character they still like now.

Samus probably wasn’t popular in smash 64. But over time she became one of the smash favs.

Yup I knew everyone on the roster except Falcon in the original smash and seeing him in there resulted in me buying F-Zero GX on the cube.

Meanwhile, Pikachu has sliced 30 votes off Mega Man's lead in the last 15 minutes. If that continues until the morning, we'll have a match on our hands. (Obviously the margins will do down, but if Pika is averaging over 53% through the night things are gonna get tight tomorrow.)

The same thing applies to guys like Marth and Roy for Melee

Marth was a nobody in 2001. Fast forward 5 years he was in character battles.

I'm pretty sure spamming down-B is all anyone ever did (and still does) with Pikachu. Always. That and his forward smash in the original SSB.

Yeah I actually play Link a decent amount in Smash these days but Link never really grew on me till Brawl and forward honestly. Just felt really awkward to play in the original and Melee to a lesser extent.

Again like I said. It isn’t a what’s your fav smash 64 character. It’s whats your fav smash character that appeared in the original game.

That’s how people are reading that poll because you have a huge number of smash fans on this site that didn’t even play the original game.

It's common knowledge that Kirby and Pikachu are considered the best two characters in the original smash. Awesome jumps

I remember when I first learned she was a girl I was shocked, but I was like 8 LOL.

Considering the crazy amount of LFF in that poll, I think that it hints Smash fans prefer Samus as a Smash character, but doesn’t necessarily confirm it.

She might just be resisting Link better. Or maybe she has a more hardcore fanbase, like Master Chief used to.

I remember Pikachu having some great throws in SSB original as well. Agreed that he always seemed really good.

She is, without a doubt. I had never heard of her before Smash 64. Never owned an SNES or knew what a "Metroid" was.

But god damn did I UpB some b****es in Smash 64.

I am also among those who never heard of Samus before Super Smash 64.

Five cuts in a row for Pikachu, and has taken 47 votes off the lead in the last 25 minutes.

Samus was awesome in Smash 64 entirely for that charge shot. That's a casual bait move for sure. It's no Pika thunder but it's up there.

Well, we're in the part of the match where Europe's influence is starting to be felt, so it's no surprise to see Pikachu consistently cutting now. I don't know that it'll be enough to make a match of it though.

At the current time in the previous match, Mega Man had a lead of 187. Pikachu has a lot of work cut out for him.

The big thing is a higher lead makes it harder to cut consistently too, thinking outside of just the raw number of votes needed to be cut

It's the only reason Halo couldn't make that 10000 vote turnaround on Castlevania back in the day

Looks like Samus was Power Hour heavy. The Pikachu group is starting to catch her.

Ive played every smash and this is just my opinion but I think adult link sucks in all of them

Young Link is good though

It's all about Toon Link really when it comes to the Links in the SSB series. Sheik's far and away the best LoZ-character throughout the SSB-series though.

I like Link in 64 and melee most o_o

I'm excited about young link for ultimate
