is anyone else mildly surprised but not shocked at all by Tifa winning?

Tifa has looked like a beast this contest.

Where she looked like a beast? She defeated MMX with rallies, barely beat Luigi and she lost easily by Samus.

Also I will never understand how Sephiroth once defeated Mario with more than 61%. Gues all FF 7 fans left the site.
So why we exist? What happens when we stop existing?
Janus5k 12/2/2018 2:16:14 AM#203
Huh, Sephy's actually winning updates consistently. Lead's back under 1000. Wonder if there's any chance this is interesting.

Probably too big of a lead to come back from unless he really starts accelerating, but maybe he'll bring it down to a 52-48 or even 51-49.
Congrats to BKSheikah for winning the BYIG Guru Challenge!

I feel like Tifa/Sephiroth will be a good candidate for most lopsided registered vs anon vote based on these trends

Obviously Seph is weak but I do believe that Tifa is winning because she is hot or something. I want to see Samus in her Zero suit against Mario to be sure of that though. Also does Zelda has any hot costumes? I want to see her with that against Link if she reaches there.

I have no clue if Seph is the weakest NNer even with this result. Sonic just looks so weak right now, especially with Solid s*** putting up 62 on someone he struggled to get 54 on

I like how Snake, Megaman and Sephiroth all dropped matches.
And yet, it's Sonic who has yet to lose (this probably won't take long) that everyone is focused on.
Yeah I think people are being a little biased against Sonic. They were calling him a fraud before Legends even started.

And I still think he could be stronger than MM.

Sephiroth has cut 42 votes in the last 25 minutes. if he were to cut at that rate for the rest of the round, he'd take the lead with just 5 minutes to go and win by 12 votes.

...is a thing that was accurate 5 minutes ago. off-pace now but still got another cut.
This match has turned into an almost 50/50 match since around 2:00 AM. The trends up to this point remind me a bit of the MGS/MGS3 match in the 2015 contest:

http://www.gamefaqscontests.com/drupal/node/22?matchnum=6170&num=2

With that match, MGS3 built up its lead for the first 4 hours of the match and then it becomes a very drawn out 50/50 match from about 4:00 AM to 2:00 PM, after which MGS3 started gaining again with the ASV time period.

Breaking a 1000 vote barrier seems pretty impossible in this contest, so I think it's done unless there is some really weird stuff (or Tifa has been supported by a rally all along or something like that).

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/5265-character-battle-ix-bonus-battle-3-runners-up-battle

That's the first result that came to mind, but it was a bonus poll (one could argue that it "doesn't count") and back then, the jury was still out as to whether Mewtwo was weaker than Pikachu at all. There are some other "reversed" results over the years - such as Sora beating Aeris in a 4way poll years after she easily beat him in 2003 - but to my knowledge, those all occurred in multiway polls which have historically been much less transitive.

I think this is the first time a traditionally weaker character from the game series (let alone same game) reversed a 1v1.

main one that comes to mind is Luigi jumping past Yoshi and Bowser. Bowser beat Yoshi in 2003 and Yoshi beat Luigi in 2004. Luigi got a pretty big boost in popularity in 2006, beating Zero and Kirby and then beating Ganondorf in 2007 to become a favorite and win against Bowser in 2008.
Ah yeah, Luigi/Bowser/Yoshi came to mind as well, but I wasn't sure about bringing it up because even after Luigi's early-year losses, those three had always been at roughly the same level. Tifa was leagues behind Sephiroth.
Xuxon 12/2/2018 6:34:17 AM#224
eh i'd say Bowser was pretty far ahead of Luigi in 2003 at least. i don't think Squall was ever 60/40ing Bowser.
So I just tried my hand at calculating xstats and Samus gets 54% on Mario next round.

This is a scary match.

That bonus match was a weird result in general, because it happened shortly after Mewtwo got a supercharged push to try and knock out Draven, so Mewtwo was still clearly showing bandwagoned strength from his match with Draven. It was the main reason I tossed that result aside in predicting Mega Man/Pikachu because I knew Mega Man couldn't possibly get under 50% in a match like that if Mewtwo actually showed normal strength instead.

There's still no way to know if Luigi would beat either one of them directly. After what we saw from Bowser/Kirby, who knows what would happen.

Luigi has gradually done better and better in the favorite Mario character polls though.

I'd take Luigi these days, and with some foolhardy confidence. I think he's #3 on the company marketing totem pole behind Mario and Pikachu (maybe #4 behind Link). Nintendo puts his affable face out there way more than they used to.

I would, too. I've thought Luigi's been the top dog of the three for a long time, which is why I took Luigi to win his division and beat Sephiroth.

But as we've seen, the Nintendo hierarchy can be rather rigid.

Samus has gone to town with Zero Suit pics before. Also the one time Samus almost lost to Tifa with a Zero Suit pic was long before MOM was a thing, and Samus being the seemingly obvious winner of the female bracket probably had a lot to do with that.

But fun question: If Samus and Lex Luthor clash in a contest match, what % does Samus get if she has an Other M pic while Lex has a Jesse Eisenberg pic?

Heck, how about Other M Samus vs. Last Jedi Luke? Or Other M Samus vs. George Clooney Batman?

I'm not entirely convinced by the Nintendo hierarchy being rigid. At least just this contest, we saw Bowser completely reverse his loss against Charizard.

Do we really think Zelda vs Bowser or Zelda vs Ganondorf would have a similar result today than in 2002 or even 2010?
congrats to BKSheikah the BYIG guru
Zelda vs Ganondorf, yes. I've always thought Zelda would have little trouble dispatching him directly. Zelda Bowser... less sure, but I would have probably always taken Zelda as well. I'm still not sure about her versus Pikachu because I have years of rat fear, but even in years past, I would have counted on the HIERARCHY carrying her to wins against any Nintendo familia outside the Big 3.
Also one more thing, but addressing XIII_Rocks, implying that the female characters are doing well because of TJF is not only a bit off basis (breasts have rarely if ever been front-and-center of a match pic this contest), but then it assumes that people like these characters primarily for their breasts, which is honestly a little insulting.

Part of me gets the feeling that maybe older gamers develop more appreciation for "strong" female characters? What probably doesn't help is the continued perception from the media that gamers are young boys, and young boys at least used to be the kinds of people who would go like "eww, cooties!" or "is this a kissing book?", thus why there's this continued assumption from the press that gamers are sexist, when in reality gamers as a group might be among the least sexist people on the planet.

Zelda's lost to Charizard (although with rallies and with DK in the poll) so I don't think she can automatically score SFF against any Nintendo character and I would take her to lose against Pikachu in 2010 or 2013. As for the other Nintendo near-elites, I think even if she wins, it won't be very convincing, whereas I think she can now shoot for very high percentages and thoroughly dismantle Ganondorf with a Link-level performance. Sonic will be the big test to see how well Zelda's SFF works, since we already have the Auron vs Snake match as a comparison.

It surprised me to hear that people are shocked by Tifa>Sephiroth
I said it might happen and I have this on my second bracket, sure I wouldn't bet on it but to me it sounded more plausible than the often-debated Samus>Mario

The same decline Vincent is suffering from applies to Sephiroth as well. He is just not "cool" to like anymore.
Some characters stay in your memory for longer, some less
To me, Tifa strikes me more as being relevant than Sephiroth.
Besides, Tifa was always a elite, she only lost to Samus and other N9ers. Her performance this contest was fantastic, she is the runner up "star of the contest" behind Zelda. She beat Luigi kinda easily (and do not underestimate Luigi)
And in case of a close match, she has porn rallies potential

Also don't forget the bandwagon potential. She, Zelda and Pikachu all have it. This is a good boost that the N9ers don't have.
Now you might say "Sephiroth does" but not really, Sephiroth did just as expected, so no hype from his victories
Tifa won 2 close matches against elites and surprised everyone, it should have gave her a boost (how much of a boost is debateable)

Charizard only won in 2010 because it was on the release day of Heart Gold/Soul Silver and he was building momentum. He couldn't break 60% on Kratos in that same contest, so this year's reversal was predictable.

In my mind, I think there's a correlation between the increase in the "acceptability" for both the "cutesy" characters like Pikachu, Crash, etc. and the female characters like Zelda, Tifa, etc. that directly ties to the "old" age of GameFAQs primary demographics.

This isn't anything people in these topics haven't said (or at least alluded to) before. But think about yourself from 10-15 years ago. Which character do you think is "cooler", would root for, and want to be identified as liking: Charizard or Pikachu, Sephiroth or Tifa. Now ask yourself the same question now. Maybe your answer doesn't change, but I bet you wouldn't give someone else nearly as much s*** for liking the other.
