Sonic, Mega Man, Cloud, Sephiroth, and Crono have are all 20+ years past their heyday and their still among the strongest contests have to offer.

I'm in the minority, but I got into Mega Man through Mega Man 64, Mega Man Battle Network, and Mega Man Xtreme, which all released around the same time. I made sure to play the NES games afterwards because I loved all the other ones I played.

Cloud sonic and MM are in smash.

The N9 is older than Smash 3 and 4.

I can't believe people like or don't like things. What the hell!!

It was GLORIOUS dude.

The best 3 day stretch we've ever had, and nothing will ever top this, is the Samus > Sonic 1500 vote comeback in the last 3 hours, the Seph > Mega Man 700 vote comeback once the day vote hit (Mega Man used to have a good night vote, truly), and the 500 vote Mario > Cloud rally all happening back to back to back. There were over 200 pages of topics at 50 topics per page by the end of Mario/Cloud, and all of it was contest related. Nothing like the urine dribble you see now.

Seph was the clear favorite, but people thought Mega Man had a good shot given he pulled two of the biggest upsets ever in the first two rounds. Then he took that 700 vote lead and hoo boy.

Sephiroth was probably the favorite to win (the entire contest) during most of it, so from what I remember, there was genuine surprise that Samus and Mega Man were able to keep it as close as they did.

Yeah, almost overwhelmingly so. I remember genuine shock (and glee) when Link was able to beat Sephiroth without breaking a sweat, because back then, that just didn't seem like it would happen. Seph and Cloud were capable of insane percentage beatdowns WHILE also bringing in more votals. They were something else.

Had Link not emerged as a contest force in 2002-03, FFVII would have been an even bigger favorite in the first games contest.

2002 was utterly insane just because we knew none of the stuff we know now, and because we had insane matches like those Ulti mentioned as well as stuff like Mario/Crono I.

Seriously, Mario/Cloud was one of the greatest matches in contest history, and in my mind the only ones that match the craziness of that one was Link/Draven and maaaaaybe the 2007 finals where L-Block won out.

Ah, so MM had already got a ton of respect before that match, and it was in the middle of complete chaos before and after. What a wild ride. Amazing to think of all the legacies made in 72 hours of Noble Nine 1v1s.

CJayC was going by bracket picks, which is far more valid. Even back then there was a huge casual/B8 split on some matches. Mario was the favorite and most picked to win the contest.

Yep, the hentai subreddit is going full hog for Ganondorf today.

This is gonna cost Pikachu in the long run. I'll say it again (and again until everyone tells me to shut up) that I feel re-running a match THIS close a week later makes the loser the favorite. You only need a few people to switch their votes (just to switch things up), and the result changes.

Pikachu is going to get unceremoniously dumped into Losers by Link, and he'll then be faced with an immediate Mega Man rematch.

He could have gone further with a Losers run through Ganondorf.

Noble Nine is DEAD in two hours!

Mario was the favourite to win the contest in 2002, but the board's favourite was Sephiroth > Solid Snake.

Regardless, the original noble nine (fab five?) was Mario, Cloud, Solid Snake, Link and Sephiroth, everyone else was considered to be at least a step lower.

I think more than voters going for the revenge-votes, the fact that we're going to have more voters in general by the time the re-run happens is going to be a bigger factor. The week break really killed the contest momentum - kinda hope we don't take that long of a break again in future contests.

We probably have like 5k more voters by the time MM/Pika 2 rolls around. Who knows which way they go. If even 51% of them go for one character, that character wins easily.

My (very hazy and probably wrong) memory had CJayC's topic listing Mario and Link as first and second respectively on odds while the vibe from board posters was that Sephiroth and Snake were the favorites. There were some who thought Mario would lose the first round due to people not taking it seriously ("joke voting") and there was widespread debate on what the actual wording of the poll would be.

This is probably all false but it's what I remember.

Also Pikachu vs Link would prove whether Pokemon can be SFF'd or not (spoilers it can)
