Outside of getting SFF by Link and Mario, Mega Man doesn't really fold against quality opponents. I guess there was the WCC in 2008, but you can blame Zero for that.

Analysis

This match received a lot of debate during the bracket making process and after two rounds I still feel confident in taking Zelda. Whether it’s because Breath of the Wild or Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Zelda has had two great performances.

Yes, you can argue that both Ezio and The Boss have reason to be weaker so maybe Zelda isn’t too much stronger, but at the same time Garrus had every reason to be weaker and Squall was unable to capitalize on that. After Commander Shepard’s performance against King K. Rool and Ryu it is quite clear that Mass Effect has lost a step yet at best, Squall got around expected based on 2013 stats. As funny as it would be to see Garrus being stronger than Shepard, I’m not expecting that.

Analysis

This match gave me a lot to think about and two rounds later I’m still not sure who should be the favourite. To me, Fox did nothing special against Jill and while some people may have seen it as an impressive performance it was around what you’d expect from him. Fox has been stuck facing Nintendo characters for most of his career so it is difficult to gauge his strength.

Despite the other Final Fantasy VII characters performing well I have not been impressed with Aerith. Yes, Waluigi having strength was not surprising due to him being a popular meme, but what excuse does (Captain) Toad have? My best explanation is that he benefits from the Pac-Man Apathy Factor that has boosted weak, but well-known characters due to voters being forced to vote in all four matches.

I’m going to stick with my bracket and back Aerith. This match was always going to be close based on the stats and based on the contest Final Fantasy VII has had it would be weird to see Aerith being the only character to drop. Of course, I’m saying this in the face of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate boost.

Analysis

It’s quite amazing how strong the Pac-Man Apathy Factor has been in this contest. People have been down on Bayonetta since last round, but if guys like Crash and Spyro can get 47% on Big Boss and 36% on Ganondorf through Chun-Li respectively than why can’t Pac-Man get almost 48% on a Bayonetta that thrashed Riku in round one. Some may argue that I’m putting a lot of faith in Riku, but honestly Kingdom Hearts didn’t perform that badly and at the very least Riku is not losing to Aqua so at a worst-case scenario Bayonetta is a standard mid-carder.

This makes things a bit tough for Geralt. In a best-case scenario for him he is in range to grab the upset, but with so much room for Bayonetta to be strong it doesn’t look likely. I’m not convinced that Rosalina and Simon Belmont are anything special and while Geralt has surpassed my expectations he hasn’t been convincing. Geralt does have rally potential that would give him an easy victory should it happen so I wouldn’t count him out completely.

Analysis

A lot of people were down on Auron based on his performance against Vincent. If Tidus and Yuna’s performance are any indication I do expect him to have lost a step, but I think people are a bit over-focussed on the fact Vincent went even with Magus. Chrono Trigger is expected to be stronger and Frog also had a decent performance against Luigi.

I also think people are a bit pre-mature in predicting an upset. Sub-Zero does have strength and so far, it looks like Mortal Kombat has remained relatively constant, but Sub-Zero is quite a bit weaker than Auron and I think people are forgetting that at best, Claire is high fodder so the large victory was relatively expected. Still, Sub-Zero should at least make his loss a bit more respectable than the previous times these two characters have faced each other.

A lot of people have Auron doing pretty bad tomorrow, I don't see how this result is going to change much from their 2006 matchup. Should still be in the 60-40 range

People are overadjusting for the Claire match when realistically they should be ignoring that match (cause pics swayed that one big due to Claire looking like an abomination and Subs looking reasonably cool) and just paying attention to the Shulk one. They're also overadjusting for Auron not beating a disappointing Vincent very soundly, forgetting that Sub-Zero vs Magus isn't exactly a gimme anyway.

I don't see it being closer than Auron vs Vincent, that's for sure.

Sub-Zero definitely has one of the worst pics of the contest. He's barely recognizable with it, and he still managed to perform pretty well against his opponents.

Bowser can’t even get 60 on what is a 18 month old fan service character

Sub-Zero's picture is completely fine. Only people who aren't fans of his to begin with wouldn't be able to recognize him in his Shredder gear. And those people think he looks cool anyway.

At first I saw this and said "Woah there, charmander!", but even when I see that as a bit of a stretch (although you were able to call Tifa's percentage against Mewtwo), I came to realize Pac-Man has all the reason to boost in a similar fashion that Crash and Spyro did. I was just assuming Pac-Man would be roughly equal to Geralt, maybe even a little weaker than Simon. That is, of course, once I remember this site doesn't care one bit for Simon.

Bayo can still bring lots of anti-votes, but it makes sense for her to be strong based on Riku.

If Geralt is able to be at 45% after the board vote he should have a chance. I expect lots of people writing him off forgetting his terrible board vote though.

If she actually manages to keep Squall under 45% (admittedly unlikely), then yeah, I have no problem whatsoever with this assessment.

I honestly have no idea why I didn't take Zelda here, she had all the reason to boost - Breath of the Wild, Switch's success, her Ultimate design being extremely well-received, etc.
