I'm honestly disappointed that the 2% DK cut on that update only amounted to 15 votes, but I guess it makes sense this early. If all else fails use fire. |

Is
Ocelots 206 vote comeback over King Dedede the biggest of the contest
thus far? Yoshi seemed to do better with the EBV. Hard to not see

I do think a character like Pikachu is far better suited to get icon respect from the voters than the other Pokemon such as Charizard or Mewtwo. Pikachu certainly fits the iconic character mold like characters such as Mario or Mega Man. I mentioned this somewhat in my Contest Analysis Crew guest write-up. Here's a partial segment of the write-up I made: At some point before the contest started, I remember a post from Ulti where he said something along the lines of "Pokemon doesn't seem to get the same kind of love on this site that the rest of Nintendo gets". This was in some topic debating Sora/Red. Ulti seems to have a point here, because Pokemon does seem to be perceived differently from the rest of Nintendo despite being a Nintendo owned IP. I think it has a lot to do with a lot of people quitting Pokemon after Gen 1 or Gen 2 and not returning to the series again. In Charizard/Bowser, Bowser actually did around 1.5% better with registered users. For how well Pokemon does with registered users, Charizard's support with registered users folded when going up against an true Nintendo character. Yoshi/Pikachu is a similar type of match-up. Pikachu's much higher strength compared to Charizard means that it has a better chance of retaining a lot of support with registered users, and Pikachu might also command more respect among people who have quit Pokemon than someone like Charizard or Mewtwo. Most
RPGs struggle to have characters that are as strong or stronger than
the game they come from. Lloyd is weaker than Tales of Symphonia, Isaac
is weaker than Golden Sun, Kefka/Terra despite their boosts are still
weaker than Final Fantasy VI, Ramza is weaker than Final Fantasy
Tactics, no single Pokemon is as strong as RBY, Sora is very clearly not
as strong as Kingdom Hearts 1/2...I could go on. Most RPGs have
ensemble casts and the main character is rarely the favorite even if
they're representative of the game. The only notable exceptions I can
think of are Cloud/Sephiroth, sometimes Auron, and sometimes Squall.
Vivi only recently became as strong or stronger than FF9 - before that,

Golden
Sun Dark Dawn wasn't terrible but it had issues. I went into that game
fully tempering my expectations in that sense that I knew the experience
couldn't possibly be as good as the originals were when I was really
young, and I was still really disappointed. It had no sense of adventure
whatsoever. Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |
