I think your expectations of Phoenix or Ike are too high if you think this is a "meh' performance for Phoenix.

Still had a point, though. Noctis losing to a hand is ridiculous but whatever... no loss will ever upset me. I've learned to not care anymore a long time ago.

The only one that really threw me off was James vs Velvet. She's from a Tales game and both have tragic backstories but Silent Hill 2 is more popular than any Tales of game.

Not Symphonia! Which is not Velvet's game but whatevs. Also in the broader sense Berseria probably at least sold better that Silent Hill 2. Silent Hill was never a big franchise.

Noctis is trash. He’s the exact kind of guy I loathe. Everything is handed to him from birth and he b****es anyway. I don’t resent trust fund kids, but I don’t want to hear any whining if things go bad. They have a head start. As a self made millionaire, there is an obvious difference between self made and born into. Noctis is the standard spoiled rich kid who doesn’t appreciate s***.

Doesn't he like give up his life at the end LOL? That's like the opposite of spoiled, or you blatently disregard character development? First impressions rule forever?

I mean there are plenty of reasons to not like Noctis, but it boggles my mind when people dislike characters because of intentionally designed flaws they grow out of.

People will even do such acts not as selfless but because they are trying "undo" past actions of douchebaggery. Still being selfish all along, worried about how people will remember you.

Honestly that pic is probably the best she could have got even if it's not in character. People who know who she is will vote for her anyway and a cutesy picture will gain more votes via people who are indifferent than her normal pose pictures. If she got a standard non cutesy picture she probably does slightly worse imo because anybody who has played the game isn't going to vote against her based on picture

Her appeal is being an action girl. She's not meant to be "cute."

I don't think it's even good as a "cutesy" pic because, well, she's really not that cute.

I like that Guile picture a lot. What's wrong with it? You can see the hair and hed got some shades on. That is literally in all of Guiles unique character traits on display.

Did we get Guile in because we assumed he'd be the next strongest Street Fighter character? I'd always assumed that would be Zangief for some reason...

I'd be shocked if giving Guile an arcade or SNES sprite didn't boost him by at least 1%. I can't agree with that at all. And I'm sure we've had a few other matches where a better or worse pic would move percent by much more than that.

I think you really underestimate the influence pics can potentially have. Especially if *both* pics are biased - great pic vs. horrible pic (see Solid S*** vs. sprite Frog).

I think an average vs. great and an average vs. horrible pic moving by more than 1% should be totally expected.

The Guile pic just doesn't capture the nostalgia.

Do people care about Guile or it's just his theme

Well, you're not a fan. Like to an outsider, I'm sure you don't see a problem with it, but that art style is just distinctly "not Trails in the Sky."

A pic has to be really atrocious for a non-fan to say "wow that's a really bad pic"

I mean sure if you want to break the format, but he's not going to get a sprite in round 1. But that picture is clearly and unmistakably Guile, so he's not going to get much better than that considering the format.

Sprite Kefka would do better too but he's not going to get that in the first round.

Plus, Kirby also has great sprites, so I'm not sure it wouldn't cancel out anyway. It's really difficult to get a pic advantage against Kirby.

Ike is popular because of Smash, not Fire Emblem.

I agree with the first half of this, but not the second. Smash definitely widened his base, but he was chosen for Smash in the first place because he was popular, and while the weird "voting multipliers" system makes it hard to gauge exactly how the popularity shakes out (and has in fact made many of them completely unpredictable), the Voting Gauntlets in FEH seem to unmistakably show that he's still the FE fanbase's favorite. In fact, I'm pretty sure he's been immune to that manufactured unpredictability and has still won every one he's been in.

You're not wrong. I actually like Golden Sun and I still didn't care enough not to bracket vote when I saw that, as expected, it was niche RPG character vs. niche RPG character and TOP OPTION (okay, fine, left option) was the cute girl. I mean, hell, it's been a valid strategy for 7-10 matches before.

For the record, at the moment, if Phoenix = Ike, Chris beats Joel with 55.96%

This has slowly turned into a decently respectable showing for Joel.

The more respectable Joel's performance gets, the better chance of Ellie pulling off a stunner later in this round.

It can when it's a brand new western character doing the beating.

I never counted Ellie out of her match with KOS-MOS. I'm on team KOS-MOS but an Ellie win wouldn't shock me.

If it means anything (probably not?) she's more featured in TLoU2 marketing/hype, at least from what little I follow.
