So I haven't been following the contest at all. Which characters have been most/least impressive?

It's hard to tell with it having been so long since last contest and we don't know how strong everyone is now and how much things like Smash boost matter. Like Big Boss might have sucked and might have done really good.

I suppose Donkey Kong, Knuckles and Ridley has impressed the most, perhaps Pikachu too, but we can't tell yet. Tidus and L-Block has looked the worst probably.

creativename posted...
Which later round results now seem to have different favorites than the pre-contest cookie?

Not all brackets have been entered in the guru yet, but Tidus/Donkey Kong, Zidane/Knuckles and maybe Crash/Cecil. Noctis/Master Hand was at leasg quite debated.

Has there been much discussion on the non-user votes difference?

Not a lot, there has been some speculation, but no match has made a difference. I don't think people considered it much when making brackets.

A lot of people were quite disappointed with Charizard’s performance in 2013, but honestly that’s because they took his performance against Bowser and Mario at face value when they should have taken his performance against Kratos. Still going even with Zelda is still more than enough to win here. Pikachu did well earlier this round so I’m not expecting any massive drop in strength.

Okay, now, to be fair, who could look at this:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/1768-20xx-division-semifinal-mega-man-vs-zero

And this:

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/3296-division-5-final-mega-man-cube-snake-zero

And logically expect this?

Charizard - 2013
Round 3: 40.17% against Mega Man (40.21%) and Zero (19.62%)

Mega Man couldn't even come close to doubling Zero in a 1v1 back in 2004, and he lost to Cube in 2008 because he again couldn't come close to doubling Zero. Granted, his percentage on Zero was better in '08 than in '04, but that's still a lot to overcome.

I don't deny that Charizard was overrated based on 2010, but he got handed a favorable path in 2013 and couldn't capitalize. And yet...can you really call Charizard the disappointing one? As Epona's Round 1 win proved, anything related to Zelda will be at least moderately strong, and series mainstays more so. Unless you figure that Donkey Kong is a bigger leech on Zelda than on Charizard (which is a possibility because Pokémon's main-line games have always been on portable systems and Nintendo has never had any real competition for their handhelds like they have for their consoles), beating Zelda in Round 2, even by such a small margin, should have set Charizard's 2013 power high enough to defeat a Zero-leeched Mega Man. Except, well, there doesn't seem to be any world where a contest mainstay failing to triple a character whose game is less than a year old and is exclusive to one console looks good. The lack of frequent character battles made it hard to see this coming, but the Round 1 result from 2008 should've been a bigger sign than it was. Zero's lost quite a bit of his past strength.

Kefka is doing as good, or better, on L-Block than Kirby did in 2007 when L-Block had its very first poll. So L-Block is literally back to its "normal" strength now, huh?

But League/Overwatch/Fortnite/Persona 5/Breath of the Wild all could easily take it out no?

I'm just laughing at all the casual bait in that bracket. Candy Crush? Five Nights at Freddy's? Words With Friends? FARMVILLE?

The last two were from the previous decade though.

wow you are right! Again though, like League, those 3 games were really relevant this decade, and not in the 2000s decade(2000-09). Thus I think they should be in the 2010s GoTD contest.

Words with friends was MASSIVE in like 2011.

Had Freddy Fazbear got into this year's bracket, I would have legitimately picked him to go all the way as I think the community could have easily rallied for him to win any match he had on here if they took enough notice.

Surprised none of you considered Fnaf's rally potential.

Yeah, FNAF is way past the point of rally potential. If DDLC couldn't get a good rally going after a year's time, FNAF or Freddy wouldn't do anything here.

That Ultimate Custom Night game came out a few months back and that seemed pretty well recieved by the fandom, so the franchise still had some recency factor to it.

I'm starting to look at the maps for the completed matches, and I have to say, I need to do this more frequently/diligently. I missed a great opportunity for a WDTL.

Capitalist Pigs.

See, as thoroughly as Ganondorf destroyed Neku, there's a surprisingly high amount of red on the world map. And this is because for sheer area on the map, Russia can't be beat, and they and most of their fellow former Soviet states favored Neku.

Also, North Dakota is the new Wyoming, having been the lone U.S. victories for Cuphead, Victor Sullivan, and John Marston, and also being among Spyro's, Zidane's, Cecil's, and L-Block's supporters. There are other states that have been in the minority multiple times, but ND stands out because of the multiple times that the other 49 states+DC were all in agreement and North Dakota backed the loser.

Though to be honest, they're not the only ones to have had that happen to them more than once. Hawaii backed Noctis and Scorpion. The difference is, those are their only two times backing a loser. Connecticut also had one instance, backing James Sunderland, and Wyoming themselves did this with Monika. Connecticut, like Hawaii, hasn't backed any other losers though.
