I just realized I bet against Pokemon every time this contest at the first chance I reasonably could:

Yoshi > Pikachu
Sora > Red
Bowser > Charizard
GLaDOS > Mewtwo

Nothing conscious avout this pattern, it just happened.

Just gimme GLaDOS and I'll be glad to take those other hits...!

Smash beasts because of it having so much Nintendo and it being easy to get into. It’s like a Nintendo nerd’s dream because it has almost everything you could ask for in it. Xbox and Sony could copy it exactly and their versions would flop here because nobody would care

It is a bit surprising that Sony's attempt failed given that Sony is still popular on this website and is probably a narrow second place to Nintendo here. I can't ever see a Microsoft All-Star fighting game having any success, though.

Finally, Master Chief versus Clippy.

I feel like Velvet/James would be closer to 50/50 if it said "James from Silent Hill 2." Plus, that's not even a good pic of him.

Well, I doubt it swings things 10% in the other direction, but he probably is performing worse than he otherwise would.

He really isn't, and I'm saying this as a huge James fanboy. Silent Hill has never once amounted to a Hill of beans on this site, and James isnt exactly designed to be a popularity contest draw. And it ain't even a bad picture - it looks just like him! 38% against generic anime girl is about what I'd expect from someone with his awfully low ceiling. At least he isn't getting doubled or worse.

All that said, I'm happy this contest gave me the opportunity to finally vote for him.

I love the plot in Silent Hill games, but the gameplay is atrocious and the main characters are usually Generic McDudes.

This is why there can’t really be a Lovecraftian movie with a glorious triumph and happy ending. It wouldn’t sell. The characters are too normal. Audiences want awesome characters, not “this is something I can do”.

That’s why Dude McDude always bombs. That’s why sports games don’t work on this site. We want the fantastical, not the generic.

So who wins between Shantae and Marston?

Vote totals at this point compared to previous days:

So we've got higher vote totals today than the after the DDLC rally. Maybe some of them stuck around...! Or there's someone always rallying for a Pokemon somewhere. Either way, it's nice to see the vote totals on an upward trend, even if it's early.

I've got Pikachu beating Zero and taking this whole division. That pick is looking pretty good right now.

There might be some DDLC spillover involved, but I think it's really just a matter of having two really strong Nintendo icons in the mix. Adding in Kratos and Scorpion, and this is probably the overall strongest eight pack so far, even with weaksauce Velvet and James in the mix. Even Marston has a bit going for him with RDR2 dropping this week.

This is pretty in line with what Yoshi is capable of doing against cult classic characters. Like Laharl, Shantae has a small but dedicated fanbase that will prevent her from going too deep in a blowout.

In the Summer 2005 Contest, 47 made the bracket despite being considered a virtual unknown, and was considered to be that year's equivalent of Tanner. He surprised the board by managing a respectable 30% against Sora, but still ended up looking pathetic in the stats after Sora got crushed by Snake.

I just noticed Shantae's ponytail is gone from her match pic. That's her strongest weapon!

RDR2 is out in four days. Marston can't have weakened that much.

Kratos is an absolute beast here. Him beating Pikachu looks more likely than Yoshi doing it!

In other news, Pikachu and Velvet are the first characters to defeat opponents who predate them.

Well, Pikachu has been dropping a bit, will probably continue and he'll end around 65%. I don't see how Scorpion should've done anything but fallen this year.

I like Glados but against mewtwo... doesnt look promising

I feel like people overrate Shantae's obscurity for whatever reason. She's reasonably niche of course, but it's still a game series I've heard about periodically for years now. She had a pretty successful Kickstarter a couple years back. She's likely comparable to Shovel Knight or Cuphead but for some reason gets a bit underestimated. Which just means she avoids a quadrupling by Yoshi, but hey.

Don't care though. I beat Tales of Berseria a few days ago and Velvet is freaking fantastic so I'm savouring the fact that she gets to win a contest match as a relatively obscure character.

GLaDOS beat Kefka and that's no joke. She'd be the favorite over Epona one-on-one too, and Epona beat Ike very nearly as bad as Pikachu once did Ike.

Pokemania may run wild, but I believe in GLaDOS having made a significant jump from Portal 2. We'll see if that jump has lasted since 2013.

I came back from work and check the results. This is what I have to say.

Yoshi is doing really well.
I expected James to keep it closer.
Pikachu is doing really well.
Kratos is doing really well.

Man too back Pikachu vs Kratos is so soon. Eh I lose another point today though. Man I lose a point each day in this contest!

Jesus I forgot we got Epona in a Contest once.

I feel like there's a certain floor most colorful female characters will have in these things. Taking a brief glimpse through the x-stats from 2013, the weakest women we had were:
Jade, who is one of the rare women in these things I'd say has a 'generic' design on par with someone like James
the Touhou characters, who are children (?) and likely pushed the cutesy design too far to be appealing to the average person
Kat, who is rather obscure and also doesn't really have an appealing design (?, help I'm gay and just making a guess here)
Recette, who is a child

There are very few women in the lowest rungs of the x-stats, and I feel someone like Shantae has an appealing enough design to gain apathy votes. Likewise, I feel there are likely to be ceilings for characters like Yoshi who exist more as icons than three-dimensional characters. I think 75/25 is actually a pretty great performance against Shantae.

At some point we have to understand that not every character is going to be super well known just because they make a bracket, especially with B8 deciding like 90% of nominations.

I think people forget just how hard it is to get 80% nowadays.

Mighty No. 9's kickstarter was successful due to Mega Man, not Beck. Beck had no games before his KS and the one he got after was not well-received, so obviously he'd be a dud if he ever got in a contest. Shantae's successful kickstarter was because of her and her games, which are reasonably well-liked.

The proof is in the pudding anyway. She's currently putting up 26% on Yoshi, which is certainly far from ultrafodder. Better than what Marsten is doing for instance, unless you believe Kratos could take on Yoshi.

I think this is because Fighthing game characters aren't popular anymore.

Kratos is probably SFFing Marston, though. Either that or Marston had an epic fall in popularity over the past five years similar to Ryo Hazuki after 2002.

I'm not doubting the game is good or whatever else. I've never played it, so I wouldn't know. My only point is people don't know what it is.

I'm a pretty hardcore gamer and I'd never even heard of it before this bracket, and I would be willing to bet *well* over half of the people who voted are in the same boat. And this is a hardcore gaming site where most people here game like I do.

Never played a Yazuka. I keep meaning to play some Persona games but those fans are such an annoyance every contest that I keep putting it off, lest I actually become like that. Indie games are, well, indie games. There are way too many of them anymore, but I get to all the big ones eventually.

I would actually be shocked if people weren't in a similar boat to me, where these contests have introduced people to some good new games. Take 2002 for instance. I had no idea who Alucard was, ended up loving his game. I knew who Crono was, but I never bothered playing Chrono Trigger before that contest. The only game I had played with Samus in it were Smash 64 and Melee; that contest got me to finally play some Metroid games. Ditto for Parasite Eve. Jill's run got me to eventually play some Resident Evil games.

I'm willing to believe this. RDR and GoW having the exact same fanbase makes a lot of sense. We'll know in round 2!

Word of caution regarding GoW/Red Dead SFF: there is no way they overlap more than Yoshi/Shantae. Shantae is a Nintendo-associated (almost exclusive) platformer mascot. She is almost as close to Yoshi's audience as possible. Really I think Shantae is better than we thought, and Kratos is at Yoshi's level. He was in 2010, I think he's back to that peak now.

Is Yu actually referred to as Yu during Persona though? Because can't you rename him?

Every one of Ulti's list I had no clue who they were other than Yu. I mean I've heard of Hat kid (because of B8 topics) and Victor Sullivan in passing but wouldn't have been able to point out their picture in a group of people. Theres definitely more in the bracket I didn't know too

Yeah I think the only characters I knew precisely zero about were Cayde-6, Monokuma and the Yakuza guys. It helped that a lot of the obscure characters were from obscure JRPGs which I had played before, though.

He's referred to as Yu Narukami in the Persona 4 Arena games and Dancing All Night. He's never called that in Persona 4 itself. At the very least, I'd imagine more people have heard the name Yu Narukami at this point than Ren Amamiya, which has only shown up in the anime thus far.

Yeah, there’s a dedicated Shantae fan base. And her games are pretty good. She’s wanted in Smash.
