So
to throw it out there how few games I actually play / played in the
last god knows how many years. Here's characters I had no idea who they
were (in addition to Ulti's list) Aqua Isabelle Rosalina Shovel Knight Captain Toad (I could have assumed Mario though) Aloy Cayde Cuphead In addition these are characters I only know via previous contests King Dedede Geno Shulk Edit: I haven't owned a Nintendo console since the gamecube and I have never played any Smash game. I think the only character I'd never heard of in any way before the contest was Cayde-6. Although to be fair, the only reason I knew the names of the Yakuza characters was because B8ers were rallying for them during the nomination period. |

I don't really consider myself a hardcore gamer in the slightest and I
would've been able to tell you which game series every character in the
bracket is from on name alone, with the exception of Cayde-6 (and even

Kinda explained in my edit Haven't owned a nintendo console since the gamecube. Haven't played a Mario game since 64. Have never played a smash game. I think King Dedede is the strangest one there It means you've never played a Kirby game nor have you played Smash Brawl or Smash 4. That's pretty impressive. No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
That's correct. Never played a Kirby game but have known who is Kirby since the early games What might be stranger is that I would know who Meta Knight is via picture but not King Dedede prior to gamefaqs contests. And i have no idea why. (edited 10/22/2018 9:05:21 AM) |
Lightning Strikes posted... Word of caution regarding GoW/Red Dead SFF: there is no way they overlap more than Yoshi/Shantae. Shantae is a Nintendo-associated (almost exclusive) platformer mascot. She is almost as close to Yoshi's audience as possible. Really I think Shantae is better than we thought, and Kratos is at Yoshi's level. He was in 2010, I think he's back to that peak now. Nice. think Meta-Knight has been in more official promotional material and
box arts and stuff than Dedede. So you might've just seen him with
Kirby on something at some point. No problem! This is a cute and pop genocide of love! |
Kratos was at Yoshi's level in 2010 because he was derived through Charizard, who was massively overrated (as we all know now). Kratos being able to beat Yoshi would be quite an accomplishment, especially with the way things are going this year. |
I had heard of all of the characters in the bracket (galaxy brain). However, I only knew about the following characters because of rallies on here: Velvet Crowe Estelle Bright Hat Kid (Knew the game, not the character's name) I only know Cayde-6 because of Giant Bomb and I've played Destiny. Characters I didn't immediately recognize: Primrose (I started Octopath up but got distracted from it around the time I got my fourth party member) Monika (though I've now played her game) Velvet Crowe Ryo Hazuki Neptune (I could immediately guess due to her name, but I feel this still fits since I know absolutely nothing else) Kazuma Kiryu Cayde-6 Estelle Bright Hat Kid (similar to Neptune, it was an easy guess, but...) Goro Majima Aqua (I feel should be here because I wouldn't have known without it being a guru pick) Dishonorable mentions to Yu Narukami and Ren Amamiya, who star in two of my favorite games but I had to check their info and picture to know that. So, 11 characters plus two who have such bad names I forgot who they were but am obviously familiar. Aloy would have been in that list, but I happened to start up Horizon the week the bracket was revealed. Shantae is a character who has a fanbase who won't shut up about her, especially in the Smash community for some reason. Part of her base seem legitimately convinced she'll be in Ultimate... not sure how much b8 represents gfaqs as a whole but these "characters
I've never heard of" lists does not bode well for them |
I've
played Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 and love the cast. It took me like
10 minutes of playing trails in the sky to know Estelle was going to be a
top 1-3 trails character for me |

My friend is a somewhat hardcore gamer and he knew everyone but Cayde-6...and also Ren, despite having played Persona 5. Black Turtle did a pretty good job. |

There are so many different games and series nowadays, and I'm sure the average age of the board has gone up, it's hard to know every single character, let alone every single game that comes out. I didn't underestimate Shantae's strength! I called for a Yoshi tripling, and that's what he's got! (also Yoshi is kind of overrated) |

Vevelt was battling someone most people don't know/care about, so it's a toss up. Attractive design and RPG probably decided it. |
"Post the characters you didn't recognize" sounds fun Neku Sakuraba - I recognize his design, but name is too Japanese to remember for a game I never played and barely discussed Yu Narukami - Recognize the design and can easily say it's a persona character, but that's about it Victor Sullivan - Who Aya Brea - Remember the name from previous contests, but couldn't remember from which game Primorse - who Velvet Crowe - who James Sunderland - who John Marston - He might be popular but I never got into RDR discussions Ryo Hazuki - Recognize the face, not the name. Again, Japanese Neptune - Recognize the face, for some reason Steam think about recommending this game to me all the time. Didn’t recognize: James Sunderland Ryo (Shenmue) Cayde-6 The two Yakuza guys Neptune I guess (knew the series existed and assumed Neptune was from it, but didn’t know it had an eponymous main character beforehand) I had heard of all of the series, though. Also I guess I had probably heard of Ryo before (he’s been in a contest before, right?), but I forgot he existed. Congrats to BKSheikah for winning the BYIG Guru Challenge! |

I
wish Kratos had received a better bracket placement, because this
performance suggests that he could go on a rampage elsewhere. Fanbase overlap or not, nearly tripling John Marston during peak RDR2 hype is no small feat. The new God of War must have done wonders for him - even here on OldFAQs, that game was too big to ignore. Pikachu clearly has this division in the bag, but I do think Kratos will hold up better against the rat than expected and outperform Yoshi. Now crack that combination: 27 99 23. There’s
no way there isn’t some significant SFF going on with Kratos. I guess
we’ll have a better idea when we see how well he holds up against

well if Kratos gets 48% on Pikachu next round then we can talk about this again...! I just don't really see Kratos mega-boosting to this extent based on his new game |

a good sign for Geralt at least if a modern AAA game character is doing

think it's likely that Marston just fell off. He's not an icon and

It's
not just the one game (though that has to be GameFAQs's GotY so far)
it's the redemption of the entire franchise. People were fed up with God
of War in 2013. Ascension had nearly killed the series. The new one is
basically its Breath of the Wild, except the series was far less healthy
beforehand than Zelda was. Easy to see this as peak Kratos. Let's also remember, before 2013 he was always pretty good (except for 2005 when he was brand new). God of War is also good on here in general. I just decided to change this sig. Blaaaaaaargh BKSheikah |
