It's a shame that the matches begin at 5pm Pacific, I'll be missing the start of most matches. It makes sense from SBAllen's side, plus we may get to see larger vote swings which could make things interesting. Congratulations to BKSheikah for winning the guru |
The Mega Man/Cloud/Kirby/Crono 4-pack (can we call it that) is scaring me. They are all N9ers with something to prove versus a very scary puffball. |

Thinking about it all N9ers have something to prove: Link: must prove he is capable of defeating rallies. Mario: must prove he's the new #2. Snake: must also prove he's the new #2, and that he kept his 2013 strength. Cloud: must prove he hasn't faded, and that he's still #2. Sephiroth: must proved he still deserves his place in the N9. Samus: must prove she is still a worthy rival to Snake. Mega Man: must prove his showing against Charizard was legit and he's more than just a bottom tier N9er. Sonic: must prove he still has N9 strength, against all franchise decay odds. Crono: must prove his strength looks more like 2015's than 2010 and 2013's. (edited 10/16/2018 11:28:28 AM) |

wasn't and he's been very busy with his job but will try to fill in a

Mac Arrowny posted... What was the average votes per match in the 2015 contest? I think 2013 was about 45-50k - boosted significantly by matches affected by rallies (which were over 100k). Not sure about 2015 but 2013 presumably is a better indicator of what we will see this time around. |

someone explain to me why everyone seems to be sleeping on Sonic
characters this year? Sonic Mania was amazing and very successful, I

if you've got Tails to round 2 beating Chief isn't that much bigger of a hurdle than Drake |
Eh I don't think Sonic's reputation is going to fluctuate very much. Even the good games don't really excite people outside the Sonic fanbase that much. |

I have Tails in Round 3 and I'm more worried about Drake than Chief! Man Chief this year is going to be bad. Real bad. I don't trust this site to still actually like Nathan Drake either. Born to lose, live to win! |

We could see larger than expected trend shifts just from the double votes for registered users, as the registered user vote will be more concentrated near the beginning of the match. The early vote totals will likely see an improvement by getting moved to 8:00 PM Eastern, but it will be tough to measure that with the registered user bonus. Another thing to keep an eye on during the first few days is how quickly the site adjusts to the new starting time. When 12 hour matches first appeared in the 2010 Character Battle, it took less than a week for the site to adjust to the starting time for day matches. I don't expect the new starting time to be an issue for the site as the previous 2 contests had a countdown timer above the current matches counting down to the start of the next matches, and this timer should make a return for this contest too. There is one benefit to adding the registered user bonus once the match ends - It can give outside rallies a false impression that they've done just enough to win the match (as rallies tend to back off once their preferred entrant takes the lead). The negatives towards adding the bonus after the match ends is that it can ruin the suspense of a close match. What you thought would have been a close match without the bonus could easily switch the other way once the bonus is applied. And it also favors rally attempts since they're seeing the actual results with the bonus already applied to the match before it ends. As
a major Sonic fan myself, I'm not expecting much from the Sonic
franchise, even with Mania. FFIX has been ported a couple of times, so I
think Zidane will do well against Knuckles. Drake had Uncharted 4, and
he wasn't exactly weak before that, and while Mania was a good game,
it's not like it was a huge knockout, just better than what we're used
to from Sonic. Overall, I think the characters will stay mostly constant
from previous contests. Sadly, I don't have Knuckles, Tails, OR Metal
Sonic winning their first rounds matches (of which they all have

Yoshi/Pikachu/Zero is the one thing I'm really stuck on. In most other debatable matches I can at least go with a heavy personal favorite. |

I followed a simple philosophy. When in doubt, pick your favorite. (I didn't, because I can't see Zero beating Pikachu, but if matches are that hard for you it never hurts to pick favorites) Born to lose, live to win! |

Bowser vs Charizard thoughts? Bowser seems the heavy favourite but can't forget the 2010 match easily. |
Charizard
can win, but you've got to take the 2010 match with a grain of salt. He
had a few advantages going into that match that he won't have here,
primarily a Pokemon game coming out on the actual day of the match. |

Has Link actually boosted that much with BotW? I mean, his game was extremely well-received, but I heard his actual redesign had a mixed reception. Here lies the sig of BK_Sheikah00, who swore fealty to the Gurus of Board 8. |
