I might have to replay now that I'm older, but he never endeared himself to me like Zidane (for his good humor, playfulness and being supportive to the rest of the cast) and Cloud (for overcoming having his identity being so f***ed up by Shinra, Advent Children aside). my replay enlightened me to the fact that squall's entire attitude is because nearly everyone else in the game is an absolute f***ing moron and at that point he becomes incredibly endearing |

Why is Geralt eligible? He’s from a novel. Has rally spillover been a big factor in the past for N-way matches? Has it ever seemed to flip any results? Saw discussion of Cloud in Smash Wii U. His problem there was that the Wii U wasn’t huge, though the game was liked. If the Wii U was as big as the Switch, his appearance would’ve helped more than it’s likely to. Not sure how him being DLC affected him as I don’t know the game’s fan base. I guess it could’ve meant a lot less people got him, or it could mean if you actually paid for him, you were more likely to main him. Anyone familiar with the game’s fan base want to speculate on if he would’ve been better off being standard? |

Spillover
affected the percentages of a lot of matches, but it's hard to say that
they actually flipped any results. A lot of times it just meant a game
won by more or less than it normally would have. Big example being: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/poll/6123-best-game-ever-day-19-round-2-super-mario-bros-3-vs-pokemon R/B/Y was probably winning that anyway, but it would've been like 10% closer, so it can have a pretty big effect. Allen is being loose with the rules specifically for Geralt just so he can be in. |

Then people pestered if they could nominate Spider-Man and he said "you can but I'm not letting him into the bracket". So Geralt is the "unofficial exception" that Allen didn't explicitely mention so he could let him in. |

would be cool if Geralt was let in and Allen had said right away "I'm
just letting this one dude in, maybe if it goes well we can open it up
more someday" but he didn't, he removed the rule, got people's hopes up, made no follow-up statement, then even when I sent him two tickets about it he was really coy and eventually just said "I am not letting anyone in but Geralt." Really dick move. Don't know why he couldn't be up front. I wouldn't have given a s*** if he didn't try to play us for absolutely no reason. I agree with you, bending the rules for Geralt is stupid, and fictional characters would definitely increase my interest in the contests. I think you’re dramatically underrating Batman and Spider-Man etc. - though I’m not as confident in Batman as I would’ve been in say 2005, when this site was way more mainstream. Batman can’t possibly be compared to Pac-Man or Ocelot. People don’t just “know” Batman, they LOVE Batman. He has more fanboys than any fictional character ever. Back 10+ years ago, I would’ve picked Batman over Vader in the finals. And would’ve expected big things from Joker, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Yoda etc. The way I always put it was, back in the day, Dante was a top 20 character. And I just had a hard time seeing Wolverine not being able to 60/40 Dante. That alone would’ve given Wolverine a stat of almost 40%, and Wolverine should not be able to hang with Batman at all. I think even Jack Sparrow could’ve been a halfway decent midcarder, back when that franchise was more relevant. But, as I said, I’d have far less faith in the non-game characters these days because casuals don’t come here anymore. |

Well I think it’s ok to let non Video Game characters in if they’re most known for being in a game This is true for things like Strider, Lucario, and yes, Geralt, but not for things like Goku or Spider-Man. Dracula is in a weird place, but he has a very different origin than book Dracula. It’s pretty nebulous, I’m aware, but I understand what Allen is trying to do Still hoping. the GameSpot Villains contest Kerrigan beat Joker in the semi-finals
then beat Vader in the finals. I don't recall the details but I'm sure
rallying/cheating was in full force by then in their contest. This was not the best year for my bracket. Congrats to BK_Sheikah00 for winning the BYIG Guru Contest! |

Reflecting the will of site regulars is kind of the opposite of disrupting the will of the entire site. Not exactly the opposite, because board regulars aren’t the site as a whole. But that the people who care the most about the contest have the most input on noms makes perfect sense. In the real contest, everyone has just one vote. That most site regulars would dislike most rallies should be expected. People do like rallies that benefit their favorite (or bracket), but I’d feel dirty if my character won because of a rally. Though I can’t recall that ever happening. The closest would be Frog, but those were razor tight matches anyway. I am much more annoyed by big rallies. I guess I found Vivi over Mario amusing though. Just because that was so utterly out of nowhere, and Mario has a shady history anyway, LOL. |
My
problem with rallies is that predicting them is really, really boring.
It's pure lottery. Either they catch on and blow the entire contest up,
or they never happen and the character falls on R1. So picking a rally
means you are risking everything on it. Either your bracket wins it all
or it's complete trash. Well we don't spend all this time discussing and analysing contests to gamble it like this. I mean, we do gamble, but it's intelligent gambling. There is a reason poker is considered a sport and roulette is not. |

Twitter is a lot more important than Reddit is for live votes. Reddit starts all these rallies, but Twitter finishes them. If Monika follows Draven's math, that's about 3000 votes. Notable here is DDLC has a really low twitter influence outside the creator having 100K+ followers, but here never tweets anything. If Link ends up in a match against another mega rally, he will lose, like he always does. And if he needs a rally to beat a regular opponent, that's just sad. |
