Is this the weakest single matchup in the contest? I have no clue who either of these people are. I think the Silent Hill guy wins, because lol 'Fails of' characters

yeah, off the top of my head I feel like those two are both bottom 10 or 15 characters in this contest, but one of them will make round 2

we had some real losers make R2 in CBIX so it's nothing new

Worst was probably Yoshimitsu? 28% against Sora in a night match while Sora was probably being leeched a little by Gilgamesh in a year where Sora didn't even look good.

Okay so here are the hot takes of Jim, the semi-casual who probably doesn't know s***, on rallies:

-Monika would have been my clear favorite to win the contest a year ago, but now it's been a year since Doki Doki Literature Club came out. I can't imagine Undertale having been as strong if the contest was 2016 instead of 2015 since by 2016 not as many people were talking abut that game. DDLC seems like it should be in the same category as a flavor of the year indie game that doesn't really have a lot of staying power. But apparently the Subreddit is fairly active and already talking about the contest so what do I know.

-D.Va seems prime to be basically Draven 2.0, which is probably fairly likely. That being said I have a gut reaction of doubt to her getting rallied and I don't know why. I guess she doesn't seem as uniformly liked in the Overwatch fanbase as some of these other characters, given how some people are incredibly attached to some other OW character? Idk. She might be the most likely and obvious candidate for a rally overall but idk if I'll pick her.

-Waluigi is my dark horse pick for a potential rally. He's probably not terrible unrallied anyways, but as a character he's a dangerous combination of people who like him for the meme and people who unironically love how dumb of a character he is. He's the kind of character people would be passionate enough about to vote in droves for, in a way I'm not sure any of the other rally characters would be. And Waluigi actually is a legit meme like, outside of gaming/Mario/Smash-specific spaces and communities like Polygon/GB where he seems to be well liked/memed, I've seen normie Waluigi memes before (I'm pretty sure I saw a "petition to add Waluigi to Fortnite" thing on a meme subreddit at some point which makes me a little mad but whatever). And people on Twitter specifically seem to love him. The problem is that there's not really a centralized Waluigi hub to start a rally, which is admittedly a decently big issue and makes him quite a bit less likely. I guess you could go to meme subreddits like me_irl, r/nintendo, Giant Bomb forums, maybe get some Twitter famous person with a bunch of followers to tweet "hey vote for Waluigi for GameFAQs character battle to make nerds mad" or some s***. But you'd have to be lucky to get something going.

-Geralt is not something I thought of but people bringing him up make a lot of sense. Though the thing is that if he gets rallied, basically anyone can also get rallied. He's just by far the most likely of the "normal" characters to get rallied due to CD Projekt Red.

-I think that a rallied character winning in general is pretty damn likely. That being said, after the Undertale contest I basically thought to myself that we'd never again have a contest of this nature that WOULDN'T get rallied, and now my gut reaction is to kind of doubt that. I think the contest is still very susceptible to rallies, but the thing is that GameFAQs in 2018 is so damn irrelevant to most people that they might not even bother to rally. Rallies might also not really take off on account of people trying too hard to "force" them this time. I don't think the double vote thing will be that big of a factor since a good chunk of people might create their own accounts to count for more points, and because I think vote totals from internal active GameFAQs users are gonna be hella low this year.

-Not related to anything, but if/when we get rallied, I'd bet money that some people are going to respond to Board 8 screencaps with "30 Year Old Boomer" memes (https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/30-year-old-boomer)

The double vote thing only counts if the account is made prior to the contest starting.

Everybody, this is Squall. How's everyone doing? You're all probably too tired to even stand up after all the fighting. But I want everyone to listen to me... We still have a chance to win, and I need your help. This is going to be our final battle. We're going to attack them before they come in again. To do that, we're going to head straight into their Garden. So I want everyone to prepare for a major collision. Take care of all the junior classmen. I searched for Waluigi in Know Your Meme and apparently it's a huge underdog story. Abouyt him being snubbed from Smash and a few other games.

Sounds like a rally story on the making.

Squall is a good character but his game has some pretty weird plot points and gameplay ideas that probably hurt it. Squall is central enough to the game though that I don't think the reverse (liking the game a lot without liking Squall) is nearly as likely. And the rest of the game's cast kinda struggle to measure up - I don't think it's a coincidence we never saw Seifer or Rinoa in a contest (barring Rivalry Rumble) until we got a 243-character bracket. People also seemed to generally like Squall in Kingdom Hearts. I never got far into that game but Squall shows up early enough that you'll almost certainly meet him even if you end up dropping the game and he seemed likable enough there.

"5th strongest game" also needs some elaboration; while that seems to be where FFVIII is now, it was solidly ahead of FFIX until sometime in the 2010's; they met in the 2009 contest and FFVIII easily won. FFVI also didn't look particularly good that contest and it's actually behind FFVIII in the x-stats that year on ngamer's site. It's also notable that of the stronger FF games, FFVI doesn't really have a standout main character (Terra is generally the most important but for various reasons it often doesn't feel like she's the main; she's also not exactly overflowing with personality) and even a lot of people who like FFX don't particularly care for Tidus. There's also a possibility that Squall is actually due for a drop now that his game has fallen off a bit or has even already dropped - you could certainly spin some of his 2013 results that way if so inclined. We'll see how he does this character battle.

I like FFVIII more than Squall. I remember really getting into the junction system.

I find Squall's character development to be weak. He suddenly stops being an insufferable prick and starts being a good guy for seemingly no reason. Sure he falls in love with Rinoa, but I remember that being so sudden I was wondering if it was some kind of dream sequence at first. There's no build-up to the moment he admits he has feelings for her.

I might have to replay now that I'm older, but he never endeared himself to me like Zidane (for his good humor, playfulness and being supportive to the rest of the cast) and Cloud (for overcoming having his identity being so f***ed up by Shinra, Advent Children aside).

I liked Squall in Kingdom Hearts more than in FF8 but I like him in both

I can certainly see why his development may seem sudden but the romantic built up to me just seems like a classic case of opposites attract and he just didnt realize until too late

We had it for 2015 Games.

There are a lot of highly discussed matches because it's a pretty wide open bracket. Probably the most debated set is the Luigi/Tifa/Mega Man X/Mewtwo set in Division 7. Sora/Red/Big Boss/Kefka/L-Block is probably second.

And that's not even counting the Winners/Losers stuff, but that's kinda hard to discuss just because there are so many possible permutations.

Best Game Ever 2015 had 4 matches per day. I remember thinking: "What kind of garbage format would that be?!" But it turned out to work surprisingly good and it made the contest not feel too long as others in the past.

Well, at least it worked until Melee and Undertale got rallied and caused spillover on other matches, but that's besides the point.

So I've come across many people taking for granted Big Boss will beat Ridley. I haven't played MGS, so I don't really know about MGS side characters, but wasn't Raiden supposed to be the most popular one? He even had his own spinoff series.

Big Boss isn't losing to Ridley.

Like Big Boss has had multiple games within the main series where he's the playable character.

Raiden getting a forgettable spinoff (couldn't even make the contest this year lawl) didn't change anything there.

Being in a contest =/= character being weak. Just ask Squirtle.

But I guess you have a point.

Squirtle only got in because of us in the first place. Pokemon having so many popular characters ends up cannibalizing itself during the nomination process anyway.

Raiden is a character who's gotten in without our help multiple times.

How about the number of brackets 2015's best game contest?

I saw the official stats (https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/features/bge20_stats), but I was hoping maybe I didn't have to count all those up, and thought some of them could be alternates anyways.

Trying to get a feel of how many to expect in general, bracket votes counting double and all.

Does anyone remember about how many or know how to find the final number from the last contest?
