I'm really happy this contest is out because I was looking for an excuse to stop thinking about the elections in my country (which are a load of BS).

Which country is that

Brazil.

Oh yeah, I also can't wait for all this political hell to get over with (a great indicator: for President, both the "vote intentions" and "candidate rejection" polls are led by the same guy, who is so despicable that during a rally he got stabbed). Most of it might be solved on Sunday, but to think the incessant political flaming, online or not, only ends on the 28th, is disheartening.

In the meantime, the only thing harder than picking a candidate is finishing my bracket. Even checking the Top 100 most popular games on the site right now isn't helping!

Until then I must play to win.

Let's put it this way

There's so many contest stat veterans who still haven't won a contest

They may get top 50 or even top 30 but playing it too safe wont get you the win

Last contest was also the most predictable of all time with 0 rallies

I consider contests like those and Rivalry Rumble exceptions

Pretty much contests with actual debatable matches matter

Also you almost won, but didn't win.

The way I see, winning the contest isn't normally achievable because someone will pick the right rally and get all the finals points from it. The only way of winning myself is guessing the right rally, but that's lottery, and lottery isn't fun.

Winning the Guru while ignoring rallies is perfectly achievable, though. Usually what happens is that everyone is screwed up together.

If I'm evaluating a strategy then "almost winning" is a very useful parameter.
ZeldaTPLink 10/3/2018 3:14:53 PM#59
Like the difference between this and years is that it will have 10-20 very debatable matches instead of 2-3.

But going crazy on all of them isn't statistically likely to give me the win. Going cookie and then managing to guess the few select upsets that happen does.

I recently won a betting thing for world cup because I did exactly that. I picked all the results I considered the most likely, not upsets for the sake of upsets.
Oh hey, today is the 12 year anniversary of the universe imploding when Phoenix Wright broke GFNW. And just last night we learned that Gordon would lose in R1 for the first time since that fateful day..

Not even close, the stats topics is just way more active when there's actually a bracket or a contest in progress to talk about.

For the actual record, I think I've heard mention of 6 stats topics filled during Kefka/Vercetti? I also remember us going through several during Link/Draven and Undertale/Melee.

Yes, Kefka/Vercetti (a round 1 match between two scrubs) took up six topics, but we also had insta-updates. We were crazy about these contests in the early updates regardless.

that was the match that brought an end to insta-updates actually

So guys

When are we having the Guru
Just had a quick glance through before I shower and head to work, but D.Va strikes me as having a very interesting bracket placement.

Also, how much do we fear Sans? Besides the latent Undertale strength, he's probably the only character in that game that isn't completely lame.

I wonder if there will be anti-voting on Sans because of 2015. Or does this board like Undertale more than it hates it?

I have him getting as far as round 3 but could change my mind.

Also, what's up with Bowser fear? Is this a meme I've missed?)

I have to congratulate the guys that managed to get Metal Sonic and Metal Man in. This shows their dedication and I admire that.

But if they were able to get in with more than a 16 seed, I wonder how many actual nominations were needed to get a character in. Eighteen nominations for Michell Bollinger (from KP) wasn't enough, although that wasn't a character with a rally back-up. Same thing for Hector, when even if that was a relatively more recognizable character, having traded for him, it still wasn't enough.
Here lies the sig of BK_Sheikah00, who swore fealty to the Gurus of Board 8.
Guile got a 15 seed and had never been in a contest before, while even Ken failed to make a 243-character bracket in 2013, so it's probably safe to assume Guile's non-board 8 support is minimal. If you add up the people who confirmed nominating him in the survey/census topic as well as the NRT confirmation topic who aren't repeats of the survey posters (if anyone saved the lists?), you'd probably get kinda close to the minimum number. And this was in a contest where the 8 "Legends" got removed from the main bracket, so a more standard set-up would have Guile as a 16-seed.

I think Chun-Li has moved up to number two within the fanbase. It would at least be close. Guile has been considered to be the strongest Street Fighter character to have never been in a contest, though I would like to see M. Bison return once more.
Congratulations to BKSheikah for winning the guru

thank you!

by my count Metal Sonic had between 55-60 nominations

I was shilling on Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook and LUELinks though. Not everyone told me they actually did it but post statistics showed I got a couple hundred views on social media across all platforms so SOME people must have nommed. Enough to get him a 5 seed over the Guru pick, Sully, who ended up a 6 seed.

I think Ken, Chun-Li, and Akuma at bare minimum are stronger than Guile.

Maybe Bison, Cammy, and Vega, too. He was an odd choice for the NRT.
It's a relic for when Guile's Theme Goes With Everything was a meme.

Plus he tends to finish fourth in the favourite Street Fighter II character poll (Behind Ryu, Chun-Li and Ken). Though if it comes down to it I doubt Blanka or Vega are much different strength-wise
Congratulations to BKSheikah for winning the guru

That's a whole bunch of newcomers (around 1/4 of the bracket)! Not surprising, though, since 5 years of hiatus is enough to have a lot of fresh material.

I'm so happy to see Shantae in. I never imagined she would have a shot at getting in, so I didn't even bother nominating her. That's gotta be the nicest surprise for me.

Oh, and I would've liked to see a Simon vs. Richter match. I know Simon would win no doubt, but it would've been cool either way.

Yeah, 15/35 didn't exist in 2013 while a few others are here due to new releases after being in games no one cared about (or were announced in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate).

If you want to make it easier on people you can have them go to their entry page, right click and select "View Page Source", copy it and paste it into https://jsfiddle.net/, run the code and click save. They can then post the link instead of writing down all their picks. They would still have to tell you their winner, though you could just go through the code and see who they picked in battle 150
