Yeah, I kinda like Quiet, but who really knows.

Having a keyblade might be enough.

Think that's giving Quiet too much credit. I think that's maybe an interesting match before KH3 hype and 0.2 and closer to MGSV's release. But with those I think Aqua has it.

I think TJF matters more when it's two girls imhotbqh

I don't pay attention to fancy x stats or z stats or whatever and thus will do terribly in this contest as usual, but my bracket is basically built on the idea that no one on GameFAQs has ever played a game released in the current century and thus looks with confusion upon all "newer" characters. Nostalgia is all that matters...and Amaterasu does better than logic suggests for no reason because I seem to remember that happening in the past and the likely explanation just being that when in doubt, people will pick the cute doggy

Speaking of TJF, if Ren doesn't get a Joker pic he is screwed against Claire, IMO.

Torn on whether I want to make a real bracket and try to enjoy this thing or just play guess the rally and call it a day

Eh, I'll go down with the sinking ship if the rally happens. It's much more fun to analyze the bracket without taking rallies into account.

I'd personally vote for Quiet, but Metal Gear has lost popularity in the last few years.

I do wonder if Cloud or Snake could beat Link in a rematch just because they lost the first time. This will be the first time we get to see a 1-on-1 match multiple times in the same contest, so who knows.

Probably not though!

If you don't want to pick Link as the overall winner, you should pick a rally character like Geralt. Those types of characters have a realistic chance to beat Link. Or at least something like Snake. Mario is just not who you want to back against Link.

I don't really want to go rally either, and I think a lot of the rally characters have horrible draws. Not to mention the new rally measures are something to consider here.

I actually think most of the more dangerous ones have very good placement.

Monika and D.Va I have losing in R1 but those aren't terrible placements for them, especially if they can escape R1.

Sans and L-Block I think have enough legit strength behind them to actually win a match or two or at least hang in there and then who knows.

Geralt could legitimately be pretty good even before rallies.

I mean, I'm never turning my back on Link but this is a pretty scary bracket for rallies IMO.

L-Block is just another character these days, isn't it?

my (probably super wrong) reasoning is that Cloud and Snake/Geralt/whoever won't be voted into the finals after losing to Link the first time, causing Mario to sweep the loser bracket

Also sad to see no Lu Bu. Looks like he went back to the stricter rules, or maybe he just didn't get enough noms. DW9 really sucked.

This bracket looks really tricky to predict in some spots.

Early thoughts on some of the matches:

Noctis/Master Hand - This one reminds me a bit of Kuja/Master Hand in the Villains Contest because we've got a different Final Fantasy character going up against Master Hand. Major difference here is that I don't expect Noctis to be as strong as Kuja, and Master Hand might very well be even stronger today with 2 additional games under his belt since the Villains Contest took place.

Neptune/Pokemon Trainer Red - This is definitely the most lopsided 8/9 match in the entire contest. Red has the potential to put up a tripling at the very minimum since the Hyperdimension Neptunia series is pretty niche for an RPG series even by GameFAQs standards.

Big Boss/Ridley - Despite Ridley being announced as a playable character in SSBU, I think this match is still out of reach for Ridley. In 2013, Ridley already lost to Zidane and Big Boss is even stronger than Zidane. And if Big Boss gets the Naked Snake picture, there's no chance of an upset here.

Kefka/L-Block - Now this is a real trap match for sure because the winner could make it all the way to the division final. Kefka is one of the most difficult contest regulars to predict and he can choke matches out of nowhere.

Metal Sonic/The Boss - This is a potentially winnable match for Metal Sonic as The Boss isn't strong enough to put this match out of reach.

Waluigi/Aerith Gainsborough - Classic 2 seed curse match right here. Going on raw strength alone, Aerith would probably be the stronger character here. However, FFVII has been in a freefall the last few years, although the game's female characters have been less affected by the freefall than the male characters. Waluigi also has rally potential on his side.

Bayonetta/Riku - If this was still 2013, then Riku would have won this match. With both Bayonetta 2 and Smash 4 under her belt (plus SSBU and Bayonetta 3 as upcoming games), I think Bayonetta is even stronger now than she was in 2013. Though Riku also has KH3 hype on his side.

Aqua/Quiet - Great bracket placement for Aqua and potentially 2 winnable matches, but has no chance to get past the winner of Ryu/Shepard. The round 2 match is not completely out of reach for Aqua as KOS-MOS is probably around the fodder line in strength (and Ellie would be just barely stronger if she wins the round 1 match).

As for Squall, he gets to avoid Cloud and Sephiroth this time around and faces off against Snake. Leon definitely likes this bracket placement for Squall, even if it's an unwinnable match going up against Snake.

Yeah, I was wondering how that would look, but I guess it would just mean registered votes shown as 2 votes.

Power Hour getting rolled into the ASV. All Nintendo characters at 90% minimum at the freeze. Even when their opponent is also Nintendo.

Tiebreaker doesn't count the registered users count double thing. I asked Allen and he responded (and updated the tiebreaker form to make it clear.)

I took Kefka to beat L-Block because that dude's weird and I can totally see him beating a former contest champ in Round 1.

I also took him to lose to Kiryu because that dude's weird and I can totally see him losing to someone who's never made a contest before.

I noticed the text that says "midnight Pacific time" is technically incorrect because matches traditionally started at 12:00 AM Eastern (which is 9:00 PM Pacific).

But yeah, trend charts would be tricky. I would probably do trend charts like this:

PHV - 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM Eastern (or 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM after DST ends in early November)
FNV - 8:00 PM/9:00 PM to 6:00 AM
BSV - 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
DSV - 9:00 AM to 2:30 PM
ASV - 2:30 PM to 7:00 PM/8:00 PM

This change simplifies the trend charts more by eliminating the SNV time period, although the final hour or two would still be subject to late pushes in close matches.

That DK/Tidus match is brutal. Two characters I never ever trust.
