Four matches a day is the worst possible idea in relation to rallies. The rally spillover in the last games contest was ridiculous. The only way to most likely eliminate rallies is to only allow votes from those with GameFAQs accounts. But even then, it might be possible that someone could be so powerful that he/she could get thousands of outsiders to create accounts.

Pikachu won't beat Mega Man X. Mewtwo won't beat Mega Man. Tifa is immune to the FF7 decline so I would take her over Kirby. Chrono Trigger impressed me enough that I would pick Crono over Sonic but Sonic is probably the safe pick.

I agree with your latter two picks' reasoning, but I am not so confident in your first two opinions. Mewtwo looked way stronger than Charizard last contest, but then again, it could have been Sonic and Sephiroth really sucking.

I would think a Pokemon bandwagon is one that could repeat itself. But if we're talking Mewtwo or Pikachu in Round 1, upsets are possible.

If Charizard can't beat Mega Man in a match that includes Zero, I don't see any Pokemon winning a fair fight against Mega Man.

Clearly we need to limit the number of rounds that have more than one match per day. Assuming a 128 character bracket, this is the number of matches per round that I would like to see:

4 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1

This ends up being a 55 day contest, with only one round of 4 matches per day. Making Round 3 only 1 match per day would increase the length of the contest to 63 days.

Everyone overrated Charizard due to his performance against Bowser while forgetting his natural level is his performance against Kratos.

Also who wants to go back on Picard vs. Ridley now that Picard is f***ing back.

I don't think Yoshi's a real contender. His only big feats over the years as far as I can tell:

1. Barely beating Dante in 2006. While this was actually a slight upset at the time, it still doesn't sound very impressive at this point.
2. Overperforming on Steroid Snake in 2006 due to the sprite round.
3. Doing pretty well on Missingno. Rallied joke characters aren't consistent, so whatever.

Who knows what ends up happening with rallying, year-to-year variation, or whatever else, but that doesn't look promising for Pokemon.

Yeah, I'd be skeptical of Yoshi's strength. He's never really come that close to beating a big name, and he got rocked by Squall in 2008 (and Squall/Sora got nearly 60% on Yoshi/Fox). That 2006 win over Dante is still probably his best win.

Looks like I timed my monthly check-in of this site well. Let's do this! New character battle should be really interesting given the amount of new characters since the last contest.

People seem to be pretty down on the prospects of characters introduced since the previous contest. Excluding rallied entries like Tracer and Sans, I guess.

Undertale meme is done and Blizzard rallies are unreliable.

Fortnite having a named character that the players like is probably the most likely bet, or a random meme.

Potential new characters that could win some midcard matches:

- Tracer, D.Va, Mercy
- Cuphead
- Cappy
- Doom Marine
- Aloy
- 2B
- That s***lord from Final Fantasy 15

Would also love to see Lara Croft back in the contest, given the resurgance Tomb Raider has had lately. Ditto for Kratos.

I had forgotten Mega Man almost beat Mewtwo and PIkachu combined. Granted, it's been five years, so who knows what could happen now? But dang, five years have past since the last character contest. On the other hand, GameFAQs' demographics haven't changed too much over the past five years, right? Still, we might be seeing some weird upsets this contest, rallies aside.

Speaking of bandwagons, Did Mewtwo/Sonic/Bowser happen after Cloud/Squirtle/Pikachu? (I would guess it was that match that gave Mewtwo a boost) Better yet, does anyone have a link to the 2013 contest bracket?

Well, whaddaya know... Mewtwo kicked the crap out of Sonic before Squirtle upset Cloud. So, the question is, why did Mewtwo get such a huge bandwagon in Round 3, when it looks like Pikachu, Charizard, and Red did not? (Or at least, not nearly as much as Mewtwo) Or, maybe Mewtwo really was above Sonic naturally? Opinions? (if we assume a Phoenix Wright overperformance in round 2, there are no other major contradictions to Mewtwo > Sonic...)

I'm not sure how much stock I put into anything that happened in CBIX. The format was weird, rallies were everywhere, and there was a ton of LFF.

I suspect Mewtwo was actually the most independent character in that match and that Bowser pretty much cut Sonic's legs out from under him. Mewtwo wins regardless, Sonic just might have made it respectable if Bowser hadn't been there. Think we saw a similar thing with Red's strong performance against Samus and Mega Man in one of the semifinals, although the pokemon bandwagon was going strong by then too.

And we did get to see post-reboot Lara in 2013. She looked probably the strongest she had ever been.

Y'all should nominate Slime from Dragon Quest again. Slime's a good lad.

The other thing to consider, is both MM and MMX have had well-received compilations in the last year, and Mega Man 11 is just around the corner. If anything the gap has widened there.

I think Doom Guy would be a great newcomer. Iconic look, shares the name of the franchise, and DooM 2016 was tremendously well received. Though I do think he'd be better served called "Doom Guy" instead of "Doom Slayer".

my memory of contest history is pretty strong

my memory has been fading, sometimes I randomly go off about contest history to my girlfriend (she usually tunes me out, I don't blame her) but lately I've been finding it harder and harder to recall specifics about matches and stats. really sad. hope I can do somewhat respectably this contest

Ill second that, I was trying to think about something contest related last night, and I could not recall any results from the last 3-4 contests. Its funny that I've internalized the 2003-2008 contests, but can't remember a thing since then.

We've seen a plethora of resident evil characters over the years but have we ever has say Nemesis in a contest?

We saw Nemesis in the villains contest. He looked like high fodder and given his lack of presence in the series since then I wouldn't expect him to have gotten any stronger.
