Speaking of Zero from 999, would Akane Kurashiki (as herself) be counted as a contest newcomer?

(The spoilered-out character is Zero's true identity, but only in 999, not in the sequels. Do not open the spoiler if you haven't finished 999.)

Allen may not have even played the games, he'd probably let the character in regardless. Seigfried and Nightmare are separate characters, after all.

Still, don't nominate that person. Zero's super weak, and any real character from 999 would be even worse. Besides, Danganronpa's the new hotness. Nominate Monokuma.

(Monokuma will be high fodder at best, but I nominated him anyway.)

So after slightly over 1 day into the nomination process, there hasn't been much discussion regarding fictional characters who have appeared in video games. The nomination form does not specifically mention that characters must have originated in video games. However, Allen hasn't said a word regarding these types of characters, perhaps as a way to avoid drawing attention to their eligibility (or lack of). Had Allen said that all video game characters were eligible, I think there would have been a bigger push to get fictional characters into the contest.

Up to this point so far, only Goku, Vegeta, Cell, and Spider-Man have been the subject of discussion regarding their first video game appearance. However, no one has talked about Batman, Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, or Han Solo yet, so I did some research of my own on those 4 characters.

First game for the following characters:

Batman - Batman: The Video Game
Darth Vader - Star Wars (1983)
Luke Skywalker - Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back (1982)
Han Solo - Star Wars (1987)

For Batman, there were 2 Batman games released in 1986, but they were never released in the US. So the first real Batman game for the US would have been the NES/Genesis/Game Boy release in 1990, which what I chose to list here. The first ever Batman game was a 1986 game titled "Batman: The Caped Crusader", but it was only released in Europe.

For the Star Wars characters, it was a bit more challenging to figure out their first game because the first Star Wars games were from the time of the Atari 2600. Some of the older games don't even have any FAQs for them on this site, meaning I had to consult Wikipedia for more information on some of the super early games. For Darth Vader, his first game is simply titled "Star Wars" and there are other unrelated Star Wars games that share the same title, so it was necessary to specify "Star Wars (1983)" to differentiate between the 1983 self-titled game and other games that are titled "Star Wars". A similar issue exists with Luke Skywalker's first game, as there is a second game titled "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back" that is unrelated to the 1982 game.

Although I feel pretty confident regarding the first game for Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker, I'm far less certain about Han Solo. I opted to put down "Star Wars (1987)" as Han Solo's first game despite that game being a Japan only release. Unless someone else can find an earlier game that features Han Solo, then I'll stick with "Star Wars (1987)".

There is a game called "Dragon Power" that could be said to be the first ever Dragon Ball game, but the name "Dragon Power" is only used for the US release. The Japanese/European version uses the "Dragon Ball" name in the title. Also, the US version has a fairly good number of changes from the Japanese/European version that some people who played the US version don't even know it's a Dragon Ball game. For that reason, it wouldn't really be fair to list "Dragon Power" for Goku's first ever game.

The first 361 characters were added prior to the nomination form going up, since the 361 characters are in alphabetical order. The remaining 34 characters were added on the same day. No new characters have been added after the first day of nominations.

If the additions are based on nominations, then we're about to get Overwatched very hard, plus Ryuji and Morgana are more popular than I realized.

Nah, some of those were in there from the start, too. They were probably added after the initial setup because 2B was there already when I nominated her, and I did so literally within a couple minutes of SBAllen posting the link.

I imagine from Guile down is what's been added based on number of noms, which is good news for Roy and K. Rool, I guess.

If we're getting more than Joker from P5 i really hope it's not those 2. I mean come on Ryuji and Morgana really?

Has Chun-Li ever been in a contest before? She's the third most popular SF character, as far as I'm concerned.

I've never really got the appeal of her personally. All the other fighting game flagship females are better than her tbh

As a total aside, I was thinking today that Mega Man is probably going to be pretty beastly this contest. He's had Smash Bros., Mega Man 11, a bunch of high profile releases and has a lot of goodwill towards him.

I'd say Mega Man will do about as well as he did last contest, which to be fair, was pretty good. I don't see a reason for him to boost, but at the very least he's not aging as badly as Crono.

I sure hope Mega Man boosts, but he did well in the last contest because I think he was already announced for Smash Bros. 4 at that time. (right?) So he probably won't boost much, if at all, but who knows?

Actually, I'm gonna go ahead and talk about the NN's potential compared to the last contest.

Mario - better. I mean, he lost to Vivi last time, can't get much worse than that. Mario Odyssey, and Nintendo in general, are doing well.
Samus - neutral. Metroid: Samus Returns was decent, and the (absent) Metroid Prime 4 will keep her relevant, but not better than last time.
Snake - worse. MGSV wasn't a huge hit, and Konami as a whole is on the backburner. All he's got going for him at this point is Smash.
Cloud - neutral. He's got Smash, and S-E has regained some popularity.
Crono - worse. He's been fading into obscurity for a while. I wouldn't be surprised to see him lose to an upper midcarder this year.
Sephiroth - neutral. Again, S-E seems to be doing alright.
Mega Man - neutral. see my last post
Sonic - neutral. Sonic Mania gave him some much needed hype, but I'm still not sure he could win a rematch against Mewtwo.

All he's got going for him at this point is Smash.

And the hype that he was coming back was pretty big. Snake won't be worse.

Cloud definitely won't be neutral since he wasn't even in Smash before the last contest.

There's also FF7R which probably helps Cloud more while being in development than if it actually got released.

Eh, I don't know that FF7R helps him too much right now while it's in development limbo. The bad press surrounding it won't do him any favors.

I would love to see Chrono get bodied by Squall.

The fact that people still don't know how to spell "Crono" is a bad sign for him.

Crono Trigger being incredible last contest definitely gives me hope for Crono.

I firmly believe that even at the times where Crono was a lower-rung Noble Niner, his game was stronger than any post-1998 game. Like, what games released after CT would it have lost to in 2009? Probably only FF7, RBY, Mario 64, and Ocarina.

I just realized that Half-Life 2 is as old now as Chrono Trigger was back then. How time flies.
