Advokaiser posted... I mean... Now that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been confirmed, I'm thinking SSBU will have the same effect on Smash 4 that Smash 4 had on Brawl. When Smash 4 came out, it basically made Brawl irrelevant. SSBU should likely do the same thing to Smash 4, given the poor ownership of the Wii U, so not as many people played the Wii U version. I know Smash 4 was on 3DS, but it was an inferior version to the Wii U one. Assuming SSBU turns out to be an extremely good game like Melee or Smash 4, there's no reason why SSBU wouldn't be able to challenge Melee for the title of the strongest Smash game other than the fact Melee has the benefit of nostalgia on its side. Nostalgia is the biggest obstacle that could prevent SSBU from being stronger than Melee. SSBU will need to have a combination of high playrate (over 60%) and being even more well-liked than Melee to overcome the lack of nostalgia. Sheik is probably not going to fly as a separate character either, and could be replaced with the winner of a Koopa Kid battle royal. Of course, this all depends if you are thinking of this as a traditional Character Battle involving Smash characters, or a flat out Best Smash Character ever where these different variations of the same character would be allowed. Smash 4 was severely hampered by the poor ownership of the Wii U and while it was available on 3DS, the 3DS version was inferior to the Wii U one. A significant amount of time had also passed by since the release of Smash 4, making it even more difficult to prove or disprove the existence of SMASH4FEAR if we had gotten a Character Battle last year. think people are taking into account the chances the characters have in
appearing in SSBU. Yes Waluigi is confirmed to be an assist trophy, but
if you didn't know that then he would be the most likely of the group
(though with that logic Spring Man should also be dominating the poll,
but no one cares about ARMS here). So characters like Crono and Banjo obviously get a boost since they have ties to Nintendo while Master Chief and Kratos are getting killed for not having any ties. Sephiroth and Squall are also seen as less likely to appear since Cloud is already representing Final Fantasy (though I guess someone from FFVI or under would still have a shot) Congratulations to BKSheikah for winning the guru |

I think what we could do is have a 144 character bracket, with 16 of those spots being reserved for fictional characters. It works by having a Wildcard Round, similar to what we had in the Best Year in Gaming contest. This my proposal for the set-up in each division: https://i.imgtc.com/EgpIGXz.png We would have 8 divisions like in past 1v1 contests that have 128 characters. However, each division features 2 Wildcard Round matches where a fictional character faces off against a 13 seed or 14 seed, and the winner would face a 4 seed or 3 seed respectively in Round 1. The fictional character that gets matched up against the 14 seed has an easier bracket path than getting matched up against a 13 seed. Getting matched up against the 14 seed in the Wildcard Round means you don't have to face off against the division's 1 seed until you get to Round 4, while the 13 seed character would meet up with the 1 seed in Round 3. During the process of creating the contest bracket, the fictional characters are placed into a separate group from those who debuted in a video game. The 16 most nominated fictional characters (after barring ineligible characters) would then be placed into the Wildcard Round slots. The 8 most nominated fictional characters will face off against a 14 seed in the Wildcard Round, while the other 8 fictional characters face off against a 13 seed instead. If we mix in the fictional characters with everyone else, that means we have only 112 remaining slots for characters who debuted in video games. It's been nearly 5 years since the previous Character Battle, so the past 5 years worth of video games could provide us with some notable characters who deserve a chance to make a Character Battle without having to compete against fictional characters to see who can make it into a 128 character bracket. Placing all of the fictional characters into a series of Wildcard Round matches still allows for a bracket that contains 128 characters who debuted in video games. I would like to see fictional characters in a Character Battle, but it should not come at the expense of those who debuted in a video game.
