If this is true (which I think it is, because both are badasses that can use a wide range of weaponry, among other similarities), I'd be pretty happy. Snake's just better dressed and is overall more fleshed-out as a character.

Pretty much. Like Ms. Pac-Man was probably SFF by Mega Man in 2002, but she'll still be fodder if given a fair match.

I would laugh if SB disqualified himself for not originating from a video game.

Harrich did a nom rally for metal man several years back for whenever we got another character battle. I assume he'll rev that up again when nominations open.

I agreed to nom him mostly because I expect metal man to be a total bust and want a chance to be proven right.

I am in fact still on the Metal Man rally (see sig) and encourage you to nominate him too if you like seeing your favorite characters sliced and diced.

DpObliVion must be the most patient person by waiting 3 years to finally have the chance to nominate something.

Protoman is probably right at the fodder line so any specific Robot Master will probably be well below him

Did SBAllen ever confirm what type of entrants will be in this tournament? If so, we could run an NRT like the old days.

NRT is pretty unnecessary these days

There's a lot of returning characters these days. Maybe just a Returners Tournament.

I wouldn't mind one new character and one or two returners

That's actually a good question. The RR wasn't a "standard" contest by any means.

Rivalry Rumble-only characters should not count as returners because those characters didn't get a chance to display what they're worth as an individual.

Rivalry Rumble-specific characters should still count. They had nominations, bracket-placement, seeding, predictions, names, artwork, and votes in matches...hard to get more official than that.

Format was awkward, yeah, but I feel like the most reasonable alternative would be to include the teams like they were characters (Cloud, Cloud/Sephiroth, Sephiroth, Link, Link/Ganondorf, Ganondorf, etc.)...and I don't know that anybody would ask for that.

You won't upset many people here by skipping the RR-exclusive characters, but on principle they should have some acknowledgement.

Generally speaking nowadays, the bracket is so big and the nominations are so small that you can run your own concerted effort and get those characters in. Just about every character rally in 2013 succeeded.

I agree, that rivalry rumble characters shouldn't be included in the returners tournament. The entrants weren't truly those characters, it would be like including a character because their game was in a contest.

If Hitler is in, we're going to get the worst rally and board invasion in our history.

If nothing else, I think the rise of the alt-right ruins Hitler's chances of coming back. While not in particularly good taste even in 2011, Hitler being in a contest back then could maybe be brushed off a harmless joke. Now? Probably not. Especially not Hitler solo rather than it being technically Hitler's rivalry (not that the latter was fooling anyone).

Also, I'd think SBAllen wouldn't be foolish enough to let Hitler enter a contest that he might actually win. 4chan tried hard for Hitler for a few hours in 2011 but couldn't quite tread water and then he got buried by the ASV. That happens against with these votals and the contest is probably toast and the entire site looks like a bunch of Neo-Nazis. After Draven and Undertale that possibility really, really shouldn't be dismissed.

Say what you will about that contest, but it provided important representation to doctors.

I kind of get it, but man it's weird that pre-NES to N64/PS1 generations are all in the same answer.

This makes me feel incredibly sad. I grew up with an atari and SNES yet the first console I purchased myself was a GameCube.

The Playstation 2 would be able to sign up for military service in October.

It's really hard for me to label that era in my mind as "retro," but that's totally what it is unless you're making the argument that retro is a brand or a style (which would have some truth but still). We were calling SMB old in 2003...just sucks to be consistent with that age-line of logic.

That was an era where Oracle of Ages/Seasons was portable on the Game Boy Color and you could carry the Gamecube by its handle if you wanted to show your friends Wind Waker. Now Breath of the Wild is portable on the Switch, with detachable motion controllers and a touch screen. Also, BotW is over a year old too now so it's not even THAT new anymore.
