I only saw him suggest a contest this year, I think over the summer. CBX makes a lot of sense to return though.

friendly reminder that we haven't had a 1-on-1 Character Battle in 8 years

And sometimes you get an upset right but it still sucks
SSBM > CT
SSBM > FF7

I had R/B/Y going all the way to the finals in the last Games Contest because if I had to deal with Pokemon beating all my favorite Mario games at least I'd get the matches right

Pokemon just finds new ways to make me miserable all the time

being on the wrong side of the result that makes a lot of people upset isn't fun though

I've been on the right and wrong side of a lot of upsets, but nothing beats Draven, Undertale, L-Block, and Super Smash Bros. Melee (twice!). Contests are at their best when rallies piss everyone off, and people can be sanctimonious all they want but rallies been going on since 2002.

True. I hated Cloud losing and that was the #2 biggest board explosion ever. I have since embraced it, because without rallies we'd have no contests anymore.

Yeah. We would not have had Best Year in Gaming if it wasn't for rallies.

Pretty impressive showing by Persona 5 so far.

I knows POTD results aren't comparable to actual contest results, but P5 is worth 44.30% on Skyrim so far, which would be good for 34.31% on Mario 64, which would give it 39.78% on TP, which would give it 56.35% on Persona 4.

Persona 5 also got 33.90% on BOTW during the GotY polls, which would suggest BOTW is much stronger than TP.

It would also suggest that Breath of the Wild is slightly stronger than Mario 64, which is possible because ZELDA, but it would be impressive for a new game to be that strong.

By the time the next games contest rolls around, BotW won't be the newest Zelda anymore, so it won't rank quite that high. This isn't your typical Zelda cycle.

Final Fantasy V barely beating Grand Theft Auto V. I hope that's just recency bias :/

Assuming we get another GotD contest for 2010-2019, I don't see any way that we get a new mainline Zelda before the end of this decade.

GTAV isn't that "recent" at this point, but it's a fairly strong game for GTA. It didn't do that badly against SMRPG. Plus, FFV is going to be one of the weaker mainline FF games that "matter" (a.k.a. not II, III, or the MMOs).

FFV has always been the least talked about mainline FF game, people just don't care about that one. also lol at MGSV...

Agreed. LoZ:BotW is gonna be a powerhouse.

I'm just happy that FF5 is doing as well as it is, though kind of a shame the best FF game is so underrated.

This site correctly loathes the GTA series.

Skyrim's strength seems to be completely unchanged from the last time we had this poll back in 2014. FFV and GTA V got 28.61% and 32.64% against Skyrim in 2014. As of right now, FFV and GTA V have 31.38% and 33.03% against Skyrim. GTA V has remained fairly static, although FFV has gotten a little bit stronger since 2014.

The Four Job Fiesta's probably helped a good bit in bringing FF5 into more prominence.

e: I'd take BotW over MM and FF6 for sure, but probably not over the other three.

I don't know that I trust gamefaqs to really side with the new game, even this one

Persona 5 got 43.51% on Skyrim and 33.90% on BotW. That would give BotW 61.04% on Skyrim, which would put it at 49.70% on Mario 64. That would put it at 56.61% on TP just to give it an indirect comparison to another Zelda game.

On a whim:

RBY > LoZ:LttP > SM64 > LoZ:BotW > LoZ:MM > FF3/6

I always intended to make some adjusted 2015 X-Stats based on the info Allen gave us from the rallies and stuff but I never did

maybe I should go through the archives, find all that info, and try it now

I also thought about using the bonus matches for adjustments but I'm not entirely sure they're reliable (well SSBM/SMRPG obviously isn't)

BotW is probably the only brand new game that could challenge for the Top 15 or so games in strength, but I'd have a hard time picking it to do any of that. Maybe over a mid-tier Zelda title due to SFF, but it's not going to beat OoT, CT, SM64 or any game on that level.

I tried checking the X-Stats to get an idea of this, but of course they're messed up.

I would take BotW with confidence over games like Portal, FFT, MMX, SotN. There are bigger names that I might roll the dice on a BotW upset but I wouldn't feel super confident about it.

I would take it over Majora's Mask or FFVI, might consider it over Super Mario 64, and wouldn't take it over Pokemon RBY or A Link to the Past.

Probably the stronger of MM and FF6.

I'd be tempted to pick it over SM64 but no clue if I'd bite the bullet on that, and either way I'm definitely not confident over it happening.

The list I put before was in order of my (raw) perceived strength from them in a scenario where BotW battled against them, so I'd say it has much more of a chance to beat MM but much less to beat RBY. I was tempted to put Melee in that list as well, but since MM beat Brawl, which beat Melee, back in 2010, and since I really don't think Melee's strength (without rallies, obviously) has risen or declined much, I just assumed BotW could beat it fairly easily if BotW > MM is any indication. But now that just got me thinking...

I'd say: ALttP > RBY > SM64 > (Melee >) BotW > FFVI > MM

I'd have a hard time not taking BotW to win a contest outright. We're actually overdue for a successful Zelda rally.
