Voters tend to shy away from ports/upgrades during GotY.

Sure Metroid: Samus Returns was a remake, but at least it waited a couple of decades before it was released.

Also it's a pretty comprehensive remake, and also also the first Metroid game with a positive reception in a long, long time.

This one should have the worst vote totals out of all the GotY polls this year.

601 votes at the end of the first hour. Looks like we're on track for just slightly over 6000 votes, which would make this the lowest known vote total ever seen in modern day GameFAQs. You'd have to go back to 1999 and 2000 to see lower vote totals on a regular basis.

Looks like I overpredicted here based on what our earlier GotY polls had at the end of the first hour vs. their final vote total. This poll won't even reach 5500 votes. The main reason for the lower than expected vote total is because this poll happened on a Saturday, where there is a known "Saturday Vote Total" penalty where polls get less vote totals on a Saturday than any other day of the week.

We just had a 9-vote update.

Despite being an Indie poll, What Remains of Edith Finch still looks very terrible here. It's doing only slightly better than what it got in the other polls. It had 1.19% in the PS4 poll, 2.73% in the Xbox One poll, and 2.63% in the PC poll.

Right now, What Remains of Edith Finch has 2.91% in the Indie poll.

Switch-exclusive quirky Golf RPG similar to the Game Boy Mario Golf games. Been slowly going through it, gameplay's pretty solid and it's got a great sense of humor. Underrated gem, honestly.

Also, damn PC poll looks bad in retrospect.

I don't know how Cuphead is but I very much doubt it's better than Hollow Knight

As somebody excited to play Hollow Knight soon, I assure you Cuphead's pretty cool!

FF12 deserves to win this...one of the most hated FF games back in 2006 to now one of the most admired, thanks to this remake.

I dreamed the impossible dream about Cuphead. Oh well, "third place" ain't bad as long as you ignore at least three other games snubbed today that would smack it around.

So I was bored and got to wondering, given our abysmal votals, just how low the number of voters in individual countries could be getting at this point.

So I took our lowest votal poll in a ridiculously long time (https://www.gamefaqs.com/poll/6950-best-of-2017-mobile) and worked backward from the percentages to figure out how many people in various countries voted there. With votals still declining I figure that's the future!

There IS a big hole in the methodology used to figure all this out; there's a chance that a country's number of voters could also be a multiple of the number of votes I found and from math alone I'd have trouble telling the difference. That said, these votal numbers seems pretty consistent with what I roughly recall of previous gamefaqs results and my intuition on what makes sense. There's also only 248 votes that the countries I specifically listed did not account for.

That seems to be rather accurate.

13/14 nations where you can click for more details are among the top 15 (Spain, which was always a snub and Portugal are the only non-details nation in the top 15).

New Zealand is the only nation where you can click for more details not ranked. It's possible that a multiple of 10 voters voted. Looking at other polls (25 and 33 votes for the Indies and Remakes poll respectively) at best I could see New Zealand getting 20 votes, but 10 votes makes sense given how few people voted in the mobile poll. Plus New Zealand had a low vote turn-out among nations where you can click for more details.

LoZ:BotW is just shy of doubling P5. Pretty dominant, but not so uncommon!

The last time we've seen first place do this to second place in an overall-GotY was 2014, when SSB4 nearly doubled Dragon Age: Inquisition. We also saw Skyrim nearly double LoZ:SS in 2011, ME2 nearly double SMG2 (with Pokemon HG/SS) in 2010, LoZ:TP easily doubled FF12 in 2006, and FFX nearly doubled GTA3 in 2001.

If you think doublings are impressive, 2005 had RE4 tripling GoW in their overall-GotY...and brace yourself for Leonhart, because nothing beats FF8's even easier tripling of Soul Calibur in 1999.

LoZ:BotW did set a new record on third place though, because it has over six times the votes of Cuphead. The last time we've seen first place do this to third place in an overall-GotY was NEVER. LoZ:BotW can be thankful SMO, H:ZD and N:A couldn't make the poll (and I wonder if M:SR could beat Cuphead too if LoZ wasn't in the poll), but we'll ignore that here!

FF8 quadrupled WWF Wrestlemania 2000 in 1999...that was previously the best first place did on third place in an overall-GotY. Some records were only meant to last eighteen years.

I'm going to guess that Breath of the Wild is stronger than Twilight Princess, but that Persona 5 is also stronger than Persona 4.

Breath of the Wild put up an incredible 67.12% on Super Mario Odyssey in the Switch poll a few days ago. The result possibly suggests Super Mario Odyssey is roughly around the same strength as Super Mario Odyssey.
